Readiness Criteria of Medical Students for Professionally Oriented Oral Communication in Foreign Language

In the article approaches to determination of students� readiness to professionally oriented oral communication in foreign language are considered. The formation of students� readiness to professionally oriented oral communication in foreign language depends on the level of mastering by them theoretical components of psychology, linguistics and practical skills, including special sciences. Students� readiness to professionally oriented oral communication in foreign language is a professionally signifi cant quality and is considered, as unity of personal, theoretical and practical readiness. According to structural components of readiness the criteria refl ecting specifi cs of readiness to professionally oriented oral communication in foreign language are developed as means and conditions of preparation for it: motivation and profession, activity and speech, interpersonal communication, result and competitiveness. When developing criteria the main parameters are determined and levels of students� readiness to professionally oriented oral communication in foreign language are characterized.

The article is devoted to the application of one of the most modern and actively used interactive methods of teaching foreign languages at non-linguistic University – a case study. Method of case study is focused on students teaching methodology and develops critical thinking and communication skills of interpersonal communication. This method can be used to motivate students to use foreign language more in class. The authors believe that the method of case study is interdisciplinary by its nature and provides an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practice. The article emphasizes that working with cases requires students’ active development of research skills and skills in using multiple data sources. The authors believe that the types of case study can be different, it depends on the difficulty level and language skills of the students, so it’s necessary to choose the right kind of problem of the lesson appropriate to the level of knowledge of this group. Method of case study contributes to the development of skills in written and oral communication, as well as improves skills of cooperation and teamwork. The authors pay attention to the fact that classes using techniques of case study put students in a real situation, teaching them organizational skills such as the ability to hold a business meeting, to negotiate, to prepare and deliver presentations. The article describes the stages of the work, showing the advantages and difficulties of applying case study in the foreign language. When using this method of teaching it is necessary to equip classrooms with modern teaching technical facilities. The aim of this article is to determine the value of case study method as one of interactive methods of teaching foreign languages at the University, to familiarize the reader with the experience of using this method in teaching foreign languages at the Russian state University of tourism and service.

The Methodological Guide to the Discipline Romanian as a foreign language for medical students Didactic assistance for optimizing doctor-patient communication is structured in 3 chapters: the first chapter includes conceptual milestones of competency-based education, data on the concept of competences and their role in modern education; the second chapter analyzes the concept of interpersonal communication versus linguistic competence including general considerations on the communication competence between linguistic knowledge and performance as an integral part of the competence formation process of doctor-patient interpersonal communication looked through the prism of medical terminology knowledge; the third chapter highlights pragmatic hypostases of formation/development of doctor-patient communication competence focused on Romanian medical language, as well, are presented practical reasonings for optimizing doctor-patient communication competence focused on specialized language and methodological recommendations for formation/development of doctor-patient communication competence within the Discipline Romanian as a foreign language for medical students. To attain the established objectives, the formation/development of doctor-patient interpersonal communication competence within the Discipline Romanian as a foreign language for medical students, we focused on the innovative teaching and creative learning of some curricular content and on contextualized use of a number of communication methods and techniques based on the development of critical and creative thinking such as: Ciorchinele; Mosaic; SINELG; Glottodrama, Cinquain, Project, etc. According to therapeutic and ethical perspectives, the modern doctor should be able to create and maintain correct relationship with patients, their relatives, as well as in relationship with colleagues and society, etc. The modern doctor is able to effectively use communication techniques, request and provide information, correctly apply active listening, explanation, silence, paraphrasing, empathy, acceptance, etc. Physicians should receive adequate training that meets the patients’ current needs and is based on their holistic approach.

This article presents examples and suggestions for the integration of foreign language science taught in medical universities, along with special sciences and Latin classes, which will help medical students in the future to become mature and comprehensively educated. Integrating the disciplines, it opens up a wide path for students to understand the meaning of terms widely used in medicine in foreign languages, as well as to discuss with employees of mature medical institutions around the world the symptoms of diseases, methods of their treatment, books published in foreign languages, articles in the field of medicine without difficulties.

Oral communication is essential for people’s workplace performance as well as for university students learning English. Speaking fluently is also crucial for maritime academy students prepared to work in industries abroad. Students need to believe in their ability to speak English. For this reason, sound communication skills are necessary for maritime students so they can compete with seafarer or sailor from other countries. The purpose of this research was to identify the level of oral communication apprehension of nautical students of Akademi Maritim Indonesia (Indonesian Maritime Academy) AIPI Makassar. The sample consisted of 10 first year students at nautical of AMI AIPI Makassar. Data was gathered through questionnaires adapted from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Class Scale (FLCAS). The findings indicated that students were generally apprehensive in EFL oral communication. The students showed the highest apprehension for public speaking. The level of nautical students’ apprehension based on observation and supported by the modified FLCAS were 20% in the low category, 60% in the moderate category, and 20% in the high category. Students in the high apprehension category showed more symptoms than students in the moderate and low apprehension categories.

The article analyzes the role of the educational game as a means of organizing the speech activity of medical students in English. The authors of the article emphasize the need to use active teaching methods in the educational process while learning English. It has been established that games in English classes can be divided into the following categories: games aimed at mastering new vocabulary; games aimed at grammatical material consolidation; communication games aimed at developing students’ monologs and dialogs. Methods, goals and tasks for forming a communicative model are highlighted. Examples of interaction between a teacher and a student are analyzed. It is noted that the conduct of professional games has a multi-faceted approach and is carried out according to a certain model. Systematic and purposeful use of games as a method of teaching English to medical students contributes to the effective learning in the educational process.

Background: In Romania, foreign medical students have the possibility to learn the same curricula in Romanian, English, or French. The purpose of the study: To compare students’ satisfaction with training and future career opportunities from the perspective of Romanian and foreign students. Methods: The study was conducted for terminal year medical students divided into two samples, Romanian and foreign language students. The participants were invited to fill in a satisfaction questionnaire about their professional training and to express preferences for future career. Results: Foreign students were more satisfied with the lectures and the teaching staff. They attended optional lectures more frequently in comparison with Romanian students. Foreign students were more inclined to attend medical conferences and to enroll in PhD programs. While Romanian students were more inclined to consider emigration, foreign students prefer to practice in their native countries. Conclusions: Compared to their Romanian colleagues, foreign students were more engaged in educational and research activities.

Abstract Background The American Association of Medical Colleges has defined peripheral intravenous cannulation as one of the eight practical skills that a medical student should possess upon graduation. Since following a standard hygiene protocol can reduce the rate of complications such as bloodstream infections, the medical student’s compliance to hygienic standards is highly relevant. Methods This unicentric longitudinal cohort study included 177 medical students undergoing OSCE 1 in the winter semesters 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 as well as OSCE 2 during the winter semesters 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 at the University of Cologne. Their performance in peripheral intravenous cannulation was rated by trained student supervisors using a scaled 13-item questionnaire and compared between OSCE 1 and OSCE 2. Results Overall, a decline in the correct placement of peripheral intravenous catheters was observed among advanced medical students during OSCE 2 (mean total score: 6.27 ± 1.84) in comparison to their results in OSCE 1 (mean total score: 7.67 ± 1.7). During OSCE 2, the students were more negligent in regard to hygienic behavior, such as disinfection of the puncture site as well as hand disinfection before and after venipuncture. Their patients were also less likely to be informed about the procedure as compared to OSCE 1. Conclusions An unsatisfying performance in regard to peripheral intravenous cannulation was observed in medical students with hygiene compliance deteriorating between the third and fifth year of their study. Thus, we promote an extension of practical hygiene and stress management training in medical school to reduce complications associated with intravenous catheters, such as bloodstream infections.
