To evaluate the wound healing activity of ethanolic extract of Tamarix aphylla L. on animal model. Wound creation like circular excision and linear incision method were considered for this study. The various parameters were studied like DNA estimation, total protein estimation, estimation of Hexosamine and Uronic acid, estimation of lipid peroxides and antioxidant activity, Tensile Strength of tissues from incision wounds, Antioxidant activity, Antimicrobial activity, Period of epithelialization and finally TNF-a concentration in the wound tissue homogenate were estimated. The treatment groups with the extract showed significant antimicrobial activity with compare to the standard drug. Significantly, 93. 86% increase in the collagen content and significant 52% up regulation in tensile strength was observed in the treated group. 40% reduction was observed in epithelialization period of the treated wounds. The results of the current study confirm that the ethanolic extract of T. aphylla has potent wound healing capacity.

BACKGROUND -This study undertaken to screen a potential wound healing activity of an ethanolic extract of Anacardiumoccidentale(Ao)leaves in Wistar rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS-Excision wound of 500mm2created on the back of Wistar rats. A total of thirty adult Wistar rats were prescreened and divided into five groups of six rats each.Group I and II rats were treated by normal saline (control) and povidone-iodine (standard drug), respectively. Group III and IV with 0.5% and 2%of Anacardiumoccidentale ointment (test drugs), respectively, and Group V rats treated with anti-wound healer drug dexamethasone, i.m. + 2% Anacardiumoccidentale. All drugs were applied topically except Inj. dexamethasone. In the model of excision wound, the wound healing effect was determined by parameters such as the percentage of wound contraction, duration of epithelialization, and histopathological examination. RESULT-All drugs, povidone-iodine, 0.5%, and 2% of the Ao ointment treated group of rats showed a statistically significant increase (P<0.05) in the % of wound contraction on 5th and 6thdays Vs.Control rats. In contrast,povidone-iodine, 2% Ao ointment and (dexamethasone + 2% Ao)treated rats decreased the period of epithelialization which was statistically significant (P<0.05) compared to the control.However, the standard povidone-iodine treated rats showed a maximum increase in the percentage of wound contraction and minimum period of epithelialization, followed by a higher dose of 2% Ao extract. The plant extract 0.5% and 2% of Ao showeda significant increase inthe rate of wound contraction as compared to the standard drug povidone-iodine also. The combination of (2%Aoextract+dexamethasone) drug-treated rats decreased the rate of wound contraction on 5th, 9th days; whereas, povidone-iodine increased on all days, i.e., 5th, 9th, 13th and 17th days,which was statistically significant (p<0.05) Vs.Normal saline. The povidone and 2% of Ao extract hastened the rate of wound healing activity, which was evident by maximum re-epithelialization and presence of the collagen fibers. CONCLUSION-In our study, the topical application of Anacardiumoccidentale leaf extract has shown promising wound healing activity; however, it failed to reverse the anti-wound healing property of steroids.

Tawas ut tuber (Ampelocissus rubiginosa Lauterb.) is empirically used in wound healing by Dayak community. The present study was undertaken to assess wound healing activity of gel from ethanol extract of A. rubiginosa tuber using parameters of the closure of wound length, tensile strength, and histopathological observations. This study used twenty-five male Wistar rats divided into five groups: positive control (Bioplacenton®), negative control (placebo gel), and three of testing groups with gel extract (concentrations of 1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.5%). Wound healing activity was evaluated to 4 cm length and ± 2 mm depth incision wound model on the back skin of rats. The measurement of wound length was observed on the day of 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th used quantitative analyze. On the day of 20th, animal was anaesthetized and the skin has been taken for tensile strength evaluation and histopathological observations. This study showed that group treated with gel extract at the concentration of 2.5% experienced higher wound healing activity with average percentage of wound closure of 99.00% ± 0.16, tensile strength 3.8541 gram/mm2, and proved with the re-epithelization, neocapillarization, and increase collagen density appeared in histopathological observations. Based on this study, gel from ethanol extract of A. rubiginosa tuber possesses wound healing activity.

Background: Naringenin belongs to the class flavanones, and chemically it is known as 5,7-dihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) chroman-4-one. It is one of the dietary poly-phenolic constituents of the citrus fruits and vegetables. Naringenin possesses excellent antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. These activities promote wound healing activity. Naringenin has been incorporated in the gel base to be applied on the wounded skin. The wound healing property of naringenin gel has not been studied extensively in the literature to date. </P><P> Objective: The present study aims to unveil the wound healing property of naringenin gel formulation on excision and incision model. </P><P> Materials and Methods: 0.5% and 1% naringenin was incorporated in a carbopol gel base formulation and evaluated for physicochemical parameters. Incision and excision wound models were used to study wound contraction, tensile strength, healing index, the period of epithelization and histopathological parameters. Antimicrobial activity was performed using agar plate method. Results: Naringenin (0.5% and 1%) treatment shows a significant increase in the percentage of wound contraction, good healing index and shorter epithelization period. Histopathology of naringenin gel treated wound tissue showed more fibroblasts, less macrophage infiltration, and wellformed collagen fibers as compared to control. In incision wound model, the animals were treated with 0.5% and 1% naringenin gel for nine days and showed a significant increase in the tensile strength. Naringenin exerts antimicrobial activity against fungus and E. coli. Conclusion: The present study explored potent wound healing activity of naringenin gels.

Poikilospermum suaveolens is a plant could grows in the limestone area in Maros, Indonesia. The leaves are generally widely used as traditional medicine for treatment of wounds by local communities. This study aims to examine the wound healing potential of P. suaveolens leaves extract as well as scientific clarify of the plant. The plant leaves were extracted by maceration. The measurement of antioxidant activity by the DPPH technique (1,1 diphenil-2-pikrilhidrazil) spectrophotometrically. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by formation of the inhibition zone. The wound healing activity was performed the percentage of injury closure in rats skin injury. The antioxidant activity showed that 70% ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts were not significantly different, however, highly distinct to the positive control (Butylated Hidroxyanisole). The antimicrobial activity of extract showed 70% ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts were not significantly against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, but significantly against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The evaluation of P. suaveolens extract on the rate of wound closure activity quickly, i.e., within 15 days the injury on the test animal was recovered. This study concludes that the P. suaveolens plant extracts are potential as a sources of active substances for wound healing.

The present study was aimed at comparing the in vivo wound healing and in vitro antibacterial activity of Abutilon indicum roots. Wound healing is a complex phenomenon which consists of three stages inflammatory, proliferative, and remodelling. Traditionally, A. indicum is used for wound healing. There is no specific scientific data available for the wound healing activity of Abutilon indicum root. The present study was designed to investigate the same. The wound healing activity of ethanolic and ethyl acetate extracts of A. indicum was evaluated in incision and burn wound models. The parameters studied include tensile strength, epithelialisation period and rate of wound contraction. A. indicum also possesses antimicrobial activity. Ethyl acetate and ethanolic extract of A. indicum was tested against both Gram positive, Gram negative and fungal organisms using agar well diffusion method. From the results, it was concluded that ethyl acetate extract of A. indicum root had greater wound activity and antimicrobial activity than the ethanolic extract.

The term “wound” is defined as a disruption of normal anatomical structure. Therefore, “healing” is the complex and dynamic process that results in the restoration of anatomical continuity and function. Albino Wistar rats (150-180 g) of both sexes were selected. The experiment of Wound Healing Activity by Excision Wound Model and Incision Wound Model by the simple ointment B.P., reference standard drug (0.2% w/w nitrofurazone ointment), stigmasterol ointment (0.2% w/w), hexane, chloroform and methanol extract ointments of 3%, 4% and 5% w/w of leaves in Jatropha tanjorensis in simple ointment base (where 3g, 4g and 5 g of the extracts was incorporated in 100 g of simple ointment separately). The time for wound closure to methanol extract ointment (5% w/w) and stigmasterol (0.2% w/w) was similar to that of standard drug, nitrofurazone ointment (0.2% w/w) 16 ± 2 days in Excision Wound Model. The significant tensile strength at 3%: 4%: 5% w/w methanol extract ointments (p<0.001), followed by chloroform extract and hexane extract. Stigmasterol ointment at 0.2% w/w produced tensile strength comparable with Standard drug, nitrofurazone ointment (0.2% w/w) (p<0.001) in Incision Wound Model.  Kirithikar and basu stated that the juice of the Jatropha plant and the pounded leaves are applied to wounds and refractory ulcers. The juice is very successfully used to treat scabies, eczema and ringworm. The present study proved that the leaves have wound healing activity.

Injuries and wounds are any sorts of damage to the skin or subcutaneous tissue. Usually, any wounds of such sorts are self-healed. Sometimes, there may be a delay in healing, and that delay is caused due to the functional delays in various processes of wound healing. All the Ficus plants show similar activities like the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties 7including skin conditions like ulcers and rheumatism. The anthelmintic property and immunomodulatory are also seen. The herbal extracts of the same family of Ficus in different plants were investigated for the wound healing activity in the excision wound method, and the extracts showed significant activity compared to the drug. All the extracts showed a better healing ability, but the extract of FBO-100 showed the highest activity followed by FMO followed by FHO and finally the FRO. Overall, the activity of the extract ointment was comparable and was significant compared to the standard drug ointment. The wound closure of the extract ointment treated groups were better and were completed in 12 days, and the activity was more than 96%. The herbal extracts of the same family of Ficus in different plants were investigated for the wound healing activity in the excision wound method, and the extracts showed significant activity compared to the drug. The plants of microcarpa, benghalensis, religiosa and hispida are compared for the activity, and the order showed for the activity was FBO>FMO>FHO>FRO.

The aim of the present study was to explore the effect of wound healing activity of the whole plant of Momordica charantia Linn. in rats. The effect of aqueous ethanolic extract of Momordica charantia Linn. (Family; Cucurbetaceae) was evaluated on resutured incision, granuloma pouch and excision wound models in rats. The wound healing activity was measured by the rate of wound contraction, skin breaking strength, weight of the granulation tissue, and collagen content. The concentrated ethyl alcohol extract was subject to fractionation by using petroleum ether (40-60o V/V), solvent ether, ethyl acetate, butanol, butanone, ethanol and methanol in succession. All the fractions were screened for wound healing property. The results of pharmacological activity led to the conclusion that the petroleum ether fraction exhibited more significant wound healing promotion property followed by solvent ether and butanone, from all the parameters studied. Ethyl acetate, ethanol and methanol fractions were least effective.

The present experimental study was designed to evaluate the wound healing activity of methanolic extract of Smilax wightii A. DC. on incision and excision wound models in Wistar albino rats. The parameters studied were wound breaking strength, wound contraction area, epithelialization period, granulation tissuewet, dry weight and hydroxyproline content in incision wound model, percentage of wound contraction and period of epithelialization in excision wound model. The rats were administered topically with 100mg/kg b.wt. (low dosage), 200mg/kg b.wt. (moderate dosage) and 500mg/kg b.wt. (high dosage) of methanolicextract of Smilax wightii (MESW). The activity of the extract treated groups were compared with that of the control 1% Spirit. Framycetin sulphate 0.2% w/w was used as the standard drug. In incision wound model, there was a significant increase in the wound breaking strength in all the experimental groups treated withMESW than that of the control. Similarly, significant (P<0.001) decrease in wound contraction area and period of epithelialization were also observed in the test group animals treated with MESW and the standard drug treated groups when compared to that of the control. , a significant increase was observed in granulation tissue wet and dry weight and hydroxyproline content in the test groups treated with MESW compared to the control. In exicision wound model, there was a significant increase (P<0.01) in the percentage of wound contraction and decrease in period of epithelialization in the experimental groups treated with 200mg/kgb.wt. (moderate dosage) and 500mg/kgb.wt (high dosage) of MESW. The extract treated groups showed significant improvement in all the wound healing parameters of incision, and excision wound models.
