The gems, jewelry, and precious metals sector is essential for developing regions with this activity and there is a high degree of informality in the mining and trading gemstone sectors. The present study analyzed data from the production process of precious stones in the Brazilian national market. We identified the importance of the factors contributing to the quality of the gemstone production process concerning mining, cutting, and marketing, under the scope of sustainable chain development. A list of references was used to select thirteen significant factors in the precious stone production process that contributed to the sustainable development of the chain related to mining, cutting, and marketing. We used a multicriteria decision model applying the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to consider the degree of importance of the production stage process of gemstones and the factors that impact the sustainable development of the production chain. In applying the model to the production stages, the criteria and sub-criteria factors were considered. The results suggest that sustainable development is highly related to gem mining (44.7%, rank 1), moderately related to gem cutting (32.5%, rank 2), and there is little relationship to gem marketing (22 .8%, rank 3), considering the criteria, sub-criteria, and alternatives. The requirement related to the technical qualification and skill of the lapidary is the most critical factor in the production process. The second most important factor is commercialization, followed by the preservation of the mining area and the valuable life of the mine.

The analytical Hierarchy Process is a very popular method to evaluate the urban sustainable development. Therefore, this method is employed to evaluate the sustainability of urban area of Weifang, Shandong Province. According to the structure of the urban system and the establishing principles of index system in the sustainable development, the index system in the urban evaluation of the sustainable development in Weifang is established. After calculating index weight by The Analytical Hierarchy Process and the index score, the urban sustainable development index is calculated. Then the ability of the sustainable development is analyzed, and the corresponding Suggestions and countermeasures are offered in how to make the strategy and target of the sustainable development in Weifang. The results show that, Weifang sustainable development index is continuously rising in the last few years: from 0.28 in 2006 to 0.54 in 2010. According to the index, the sustainability of urban area is improved significantly for some environmental infrastructure being operated in recent years.

In this paper, the indexes that are used to assess the influence of road construction on Inner Mongolia grassland have been proposed based on the environment protection perspective. The Analytic hierarchy process was employed to evaluate the importance of different indexes regarding to influence. These indexes would be used to provide information for decision making about road construction in order to achieve the sustainable development of grassland.

AbstractThe aim of the following study was to compare a few methods of river regulations and indicate the one which fully meets technical regulative standard and concurrently ensures protection of the watercourse ecosystem. According to the sustainable development rules it is of the most importance in every human activity to compromise between developmental and environmental needs of current and future generations. Therefore, both technical criteria related to flood safety and environmental ones were taken into consideration in the analysis. Field study was conducted in vegetation stage between 2008 and 2014 in small and medium lowland watercourses in Lower Silesia. The research comprised of measurements and descriptions of selected technical and environmental elements of a complex system of the watercourse river bed. Basing on obtained results a multicriterial assessment of the effects of the works was conducted. In order to assess the results an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used in the study. It facilitated the creation of linear ranking of river beds and indicate the most optimal solution in terms of sustainable development. Such methods have not been applied in solving problems connected with river regulation. That’s why this study aims also at checking the utility of this method in decision making in both planning and regulation works realization. Results of the study indicate high usefulness of AHP method in the decision-making process.

This article is aimed at summarizing the results of the fieldwork research conducted by a group of researchers from the University of São Paulo within local communities in the municipalities of Salvaterra, Bragança and Breves, which are located in the state of Pará in the Northern part of Brazil. The object of analysis is the production chain of oleaginous seeds obtained through the extraction activity that are used as inputs in the processing food and cosmetics industries. This article seeks to answer the following questions: what role do non-state actors play in sustainable development and biodiversity regulation at the local level?Which are the social and environmental impacts? In order to answer it, this research focuses on the impact of the extractive activity on income generation, local development and local environmental externalities caused by market incentives. The main hypothesis is that it is possible to go beyond the trade-off between welfare gains and the preservation of the environment, and thus contribute to the rational use of Common-Pool Resources (CPRs).The motivation of this article is intimately related to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 and the sustainable use of biodiversity. It is argued that the whole process is subjected to a multilevel context in which actors and arenas interact with each other through ‘authoritative mechanisms’. Both quantitative and qualitative data have been collected through surveys conducted among local families.

With respect to mining area, to establish an evaluation system that aims to reflecting its actual condition and assessing its sustainable development ability has been of importance. In this paper, we discussed the meaning of sustainable development and evaluation factors, and then built a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model to evaluate the sustainable development condition of mining area.

Abstract. The article analyzes the issues of identifying new opportunities and resources, combining the production chain of raw materials and finished products to ensure the sustainable development of industries and regions, determining the “growth point” of the regions and, on this basis, forming investment development projects in accordance with their specialization. At the same time, priorities of specialized development in the Republic of Karakalpakstan were studied taking into account the specific capabilities of cities and districts – on the example of the Muynak district.

Studying on coastal zone sustainable development (CZSD) has become the hot research region, and setting up the indicator systems and the assessment models of CZSD has being become a challenging task. Thirty-six indicators and three composite indices from the dimensions of environment, economy and society subsystems are built and used to assessment the comprehensive coordination degree and sustainable development degree of coastal city in this paper, and analytical hierarchy process and multi-variate statistics analysis method are adopted to determine the indicator’s weight. As a case study, Tianjin was assessed for sustainable development in the period from 2000 to 2010. The results showed that Tianjin was almost in the potentially unsustainable development or intermediate sustainable development.
