Winged bean, Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (L) DC, is described as having antioxidant properties. This work evaluated the biochemical and antioxidant characteristics of the P. tetragonolobus genotypes. Twelve-winged bean genotypes were calculated for total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of biochemical characters and antioxidant properties by using four methods: 2,2-diphenyl picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), cupric reducing antioxidant power (CUPRAC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). The plant material was grown in the same location conditions in Indonesia. The total phenolic content varied from 154.6 to 161.5 mg GAE/ 100 g, and flavonoid ranged from 105.2 to 112.4 mg QE/ 100 g fresh weight. The antioxidant capacities were 30.6 - 47.0, 140.4 - 167.6, 66.9 - 170.8, and 28.0 - 52.4 µmol TE/ 100 g fresh weight as calculated by the DPPH, TEAC, FRAP, and CUPRAC assays, respectively. The antioxidant activities were significantly correlated with the polyphenol content of winged bean genotypes fruits. The genotypes TU, L3, H3U, H1P, and TH were recognized higher based on their TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activities, indicating that these genotypes to be promising for further breeding program and commercial purposes.

In the past few years, there has been a renewed interest in studying a wide variety of food products that show beneficial effects on human health.Capsicumis an important agricultural crop, not only because its economic importance, but also for the nutritional values of its pods, mainly due to the fact that they are an excellent source of antioxidant compounds, and also of specific constituents such as the pungent capsaicinoids localized in the placental tissue. This current study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant capacity and total phenolic contents from fruits tissues of twoCapsicum chinenseaccessions, namely, Chak k’an-iik (orange) and MR8H (red), at contrasting maturation stages. Results showed that red immature placental tissue, with a Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) value of 55.59 μmols TE g−1 FW, exhibited the strongest total antioxidant capacity using both the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the CUPRAC methods. Placental tissue also had the highest total phenolic content (27 g GAE 100 g−1 FW). The antioxidant capacity ofCapsicumwas directly related to the total amount of phenolic compounds detected. In particular, placentas had high levels of capsaicinoids, which might be the principal responsible for their strong antioxidant activities.

Tea was brewed from young leaves of 4 weeks old Thai upland black waxy rice plants of the cultivar ‘Damgatondam’, which has a noticeable fragrant smell from both seeds and leaves. The plants were harvested about 1 cm above soil level, washed, and cut into pieces, about 1 cm long. These pieces were then steamed for 1 min in a steamer rack, withering for 5min by spreading them out in a thin layer, pan-roasted at 70°C for 30 min, and finally dried at 70°C for 90 min. They were either kept as pieces of leaves or ground into a powder, and both were used for brewing tea by infusion in water at 4oC, room temperature (about 25oC), for 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, or 15 h and brewing at 70oC or 98oC for 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 or 15 min. Directly after brewing, the tea was stored at -25oC awaiting analysis. Each sample was analyzed for total phenolic content (TPC) and for antioxidant activity, by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazo line-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) assays. Results showed that tea brewed from ground leaves had higher antioxidant activity than tea brewed from ungrounded leaves. The highest level of extraction was at 98oC for 15 min, where the TPC was 62.79 mg GAE/100g, antioxidant activity was 278.04 for DPPH, 195.38 for ABTS and 1150.13 mg TE/100g for FRAP. Samples extracted at 4oC or room temperature also had high levels of TPC and antioxidant activity with the maximum extraction at room temperature for 15 h; where TPC was 46.76 mg GAE/100g, and antioxidant activities were 152.72 for DPPH, 140.42 for ABTS and 950.32 mg TE/100 g for FRAP. Therefore, the level of extraction for tea brewed in all four conditions depended on both temperature and brewing time. Also, extraction of high levels of bioactive compounds depended on large surface areas of the leaves being in contact with water.

PurposeSalak (Salacca zalacca) is an underutilised fruit. The bioactivities of this fruit have rarely been studied scientifically. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the antioxidant activity of extracts derived from the peel, fruit and kernel of the Salak fruit, as well as the hypoglycemic and anti-hypertensive properties of Salak peel extracts.Design/methodology/approachThe peel, fruit and kernel of the Salak were extracted using distilled water, methanol and ethanol. Antioxidant activities, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and alpha-amylase inhibition properties of the extracts were estimated via in vitro standard methods. Besides, the total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of the extracts were also determined in the present study. The antioxidant activities of different parts of Salak extracts were determined by ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) methods. Percent of radical scavenging properties were calculated via DPPH assay. The hypoglycemic and anti-hypertensive properties of Salak peel were evaluated using alpha-amylase inhibition and ACE assays, respectively.FindingsFruit extracts of Salak in methanol were found to exhibit the highest TPC (10.27 ± 0.12 mg GAE/g), TFC (11.04 ± 0.89 mg CE/g) and antioxidant properties amongst all samples whereby the TPC and TFC were strongly correlated with antioxidant activities. On the other hand, distilled water extracted Salak kernel showed to have the lowest TPC (0.53 ± 0.05 mg GAE/g), TFC (0.37 ± 0.01 mg CE/g) and antioxidant properties amongst all the Salak extracts. Peel extracts exhibit comparable antioxidant activities with fruit extracts in the current findings. In addition, peel extracts indicated some extend of ACE and alpha-amylase inhibition activities regardless of the solvents used. Methanol and ethanol peel extracts indicated no significant difference (p < 0.05) ACE (98%) and alpha-amylase (90%) inhibition activities. However, distilled water extracted Salak peel showed significantly lower ACE and alpha-amylase inhibition in comparison to methanol and ethanol peel extracts.Originality/valueThe present findings suggested that the fruit of Salak exhibits the highest antioxidant properties, followed by the peel and lastly, the kernel, which shows the lowest antioxidant properties amongst all the samples. The results also indicated that the peel extracts have ACE and alpha-amylase inhibition activities.

The antioxidant activities and total phenolic content of 30 samples of acacia honey from Croatian territory were analysed. Phenolics were determined by the modified Folin-Ciocalteu method, antiradical activity by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and potential antioxidant activity using the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method. In all samples, physicochemical parameters (water content, electrical conductivity, total reducing sugars, sucrose content, acidity, hydroxymethylfurfural content, prolin content, optical rotation, diastase activity and invertase activity) were measured according to Croatian legislation and International regulatory standards. Honey can be considered as a dietary supplement as it contains some important components including α-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, flavonoids and phenolics. The composition and properties of honey are dependent on floral origins, climatic conditions of the produced area, processing and storage methods. The results of physicochemical analyses showed that all the values of investigated parameters are in agreement with the current legislation. Phenolic content ranged from 31.72 mg/kg to 80.11 mg/kg, antiradical activity expressed as IC50 ranged from 61.28% to 253.47% and antioxidant activity expressed as FRAP value from 6.95 to 142.43. A positive correlation was observed between total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, indicating that phenolic compounds are mainly responsible for the antioxidant power of acacia honey.

In this study, the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. or Rang Chuet (RC) extracts from leaf, stem and rhizome were evaluated by using ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP) and the folin ciocalteu method for total phenolic compounds (TPC).The extracts were prepared by infusion using different amount of plant powder (2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 g) at different concentrations of ethanol as 0, 25, 50, and 75% and extraction time of 24, 48, and 72 h. The crude extract of 7.5 g leaf powder extracted for 72 h using water as the extraction solvent showed the highest antioxidant properties and total phenolic content. This extraction condition produced a FRAP content of 2.62 ± 0.01 mmol Fe2+/g that was significantly differed from those of the stem and rhizome and the highest TPC content of 877.36±18.75 (mg GAE/g). The crude extract from the leaf was subsequently encapsulated by using β-cylcodextrin (BCD) and maltodextrin 20DE (MD) as coating materials using freeze drying method. The encapsulated powder was investigated for its antioxidant activity. The highest encapsulation efficiency (EE) was obtained when only maltodextrin 20DE was used. The storage stability of encapsulated T. luarifolia leaf crude extract was then studied by storing the encapsulated powder at 35, 45, and 55°C for 5 weeks. The storage temperature had no effect on the stability of the encapsulated powder when TPC was used as the criteria unlike that of FRAP which was inconsistent during storage.

Nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries have been increasingly engaged in finding natural alternatives compounds as potential antioxidants. The use of phytochemicals is introduced as a good source of natural antioxidants. Murayya koenigii leaves, commonly used in cooking and traditional medicines have been examined for their remarkable antioxidant potential, yet still, it remains an understudied herb. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the antioxidant properties and flavonoids profile in M. koenigii leaves extracted using; solvent assisted extraction (SAE), microwave assisted extraction (MAE) and ultrasonic assisted extraction (UAE). The antioxidant properties of M. koenigii were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). M. koenigii leaves extracted using the UAE method have responded strongly towards a 2, 2-diphenyl -2-picryl-hydrazyl DPPH assay with the highest inhibition (%) of 78.00±1.00. Using the ferric thiocyanate (FTC) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method assays, the M. koenigii leaves with the lowest absorbance were assigned as a sample with the highest antioxidant activity. The M. koenigii leaves extracted using UAE had the lowest absorbance with 0.01±0.00. In the TPC assay, the MAE method showed the highest total phenolic content (120.60±14.81 mg GAE/g sample). The TFC assay demonstrated that MAE methods have the highest total phenolic content (93.38±4.33 mg QE/g sample. The M. koenigii leaves extracted by MAE showed the highest gallic acid, catechin, epigallocatechin gallate, rutin and kaempferol concentration (mg/L). M. koenigii leaves subjected to SAE extraction has the highest concentration of p-coumaric acid, myricetin and quercetin (mg/L). This study found that M. koenigii leaves extracted using UAE exhibited better antioxidant activities than that of MAE and SAE. These useful findings have managed to narrow the knowledge gap regarding the effects of different extraction methods on the antioxidant property of M. koenigii.

AbstractObjective: Mint (Mentha spp.) genotypes used as spices are cultivated in Turkey and used for different purposes including herbal tea, spices, the cosmetics industry, and are used in folk medicine. While mint species have been used in traditional practices during humanity’s long history, there is limited research on the comparison of their antioxidant capacity and phenolic contents. This aim of the research is to compare antioxidant capacity and phenolic contents in mint clones to determine superior genotypes for herbal and spice usage and cultivation.Methods: Antioxidant capacity was evaluated by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). Total phenolic content in clones were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method.Results: Maximum total phenolic content [28.27±3.95 μg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight (DW)] and FRAP activity 577.09±46.02 μmol Trolox equiv/g DW were obtained from Clone 13 (M. spicata), while M. piperita clones were higher for TEAC activity (800.02±1.10 μmol Trolox equiv/g DW). The results were first records for M. villoso nervata. FRAP and TEAC activities selected clones were correlated with total phenolic content (r=0.77; 0.73 respectively).Conclusion: According to the results, it can be suggested that Clone 13, Clone 5, (M. spicata) Clone 3 and Clone 8 (M. piperita) are more suitable for use as spice, herbal tea, and antioxidant agents. The clones must be selected for commercial cultivation by the grower and they can be used as spices and herbal teas.

Marine algae contains bioactive secondary metabolites that  have potential to be developed as antioxidant. The aims of  this research were to investigate antioxidant activity and total phenolic compound of marine algae collected from Binuangeun Beach, Banten and to characterize antioxidant compounds from selected algae species. Antioxidant activity was determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) assay and Ferric Ion Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) Assay, while total phenolic content was estimated by Folin-Ciocalteau method. Isolation of bioactive antioxidant compound was performed using SiO2 column chromatography and preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The antioxidan activity evaluation was conducted to methanol extracts  from 20 species (7 Chlorophyta, 9 Phaeophyta and 4 Rhodophyta). Results showed that Padina australis extract was found to be the most active. The major bioactive antioxidant compound was identified as fucoxanthin and a polar compound that was suspected as phenolic compound. The extracts of P. australis presented the highest phenolic content (58.59 mg GAE/g). A significant correlation between antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content was found, indicating that phenolic compounds are the major contributors to the antioxidant properties of P. australis.

Abstract Polyphenolic compounds reportedly produce physiological effects that are beneficial to health. Bee products are particularly rich in polyphenolic compounds. We determined the antioxidant capacity and the phenolic and flavonoid compounds content of 81 samples of honey. We used the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent method to evaluate the total phenolic content. The antioxidant activities were evaluated using in vitro scavenging assays of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH ) and hydroxyl radicals (OH ), Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC ), and ferric-reducing antioxidant capacity (FRAC ). Total phenolic content ranged from 40.3 to 193.0 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE )/100 g; the flavonoid content varied from 1.4 to 7.5 mg quercetin equivalents (QE)/100 g. Eucalyptus honeys exhibited significantly higher phenolic content and free radical-scavenging activity than clover honey samples (p<0.05 for all). Principal component analysis explained 73% of the differences observed in antiradical activity with respect to floral origin. Total phenolic content may be more useful than the radical-scavenging assay for detecting antioxidant capacity in honey; it also represents the variable that most appropriately discriminated among these honeys.
