The article presents the results of long-term research of ravine oak forests of the Rostov region. The term ‘bayrack’ (ravine) forest is associated with the growing of forests of this type on the slopes of ravines in the forest-steppe zone. The conducted ecological and floral classification showed a high syntaxonomic diversity of ravine oak forests of the region. Forest communities are represented by 6 associations: Scorzonero ensifoliae–Quercetum Sokolova ex Semenishchenkov 2020; Vicio pisiformis–Quercetum roboris Semenishchenkov 2012; Pyro pyrastri– Quercetum roboris Poluyanov 2012; Chamaecytiso ruthenici–Quercetum roboris Poluyanov 2012; Fritillario ruthenici-Quercetum roboris Onyschenko, Dyakova et Karpenko ex Goncharenko in Goncharenko et al. 2020, Melico pictae-Ulmetum minoris ass. nov. prov. from 2 classes: Carpino–Fagetea, Quercetea pubescentis and 2 unions: Aceri campestris-Quercion roboris and Scutellario altissimae-Quercion roboris. There are 67 rare plant species listed in the Red Books of the Rostov [1], Volgograd [2] and Voronezh [3] regions in the communities of these associations. Oak forests in the south of the European part of Russia significantly increase the biological diversity not only of the Don region, but also of the entire steppe zone of the country.

There is a relationship between the properties of wood. Percentage of late wood – wood macrostructure characterization is a definite relation to density. This relationship varies slightly depending on the species and environmental factors. Establishment of interrelation of these parameters for wood from different regions and growing conditions, will more accurately judge the quality indicators of wood in specific circumstances. The studies were conducted with a timber of Scots pine growing in the Vologda region. In Ustyuzhansky Forestry two sites differing in conditions of growth are selected - lichen pine forest and blueberry and cranberry pine forest.

Groundwater recharge by precipitation is the main source of groundwater resources, which are widely used in the European part of Russia (ER). The main goal of the presented studies is to analyze the effect of observed climate changes on the processes of groundwater recharge. For this purpose analysis of long-term meteorological data as well as water budget and groundwater recharge simulation were used. First, meteorological data of 22 weather stations, located from south (Lat 46°) to north (Lat 66°) of ER for historical (1965–1988) and modern (1989–2018) periods were compared to investigate the observed latitudinal changes in annual and seasonal averages of precipitation, wind speed, air temperature, and humidity. Second, water budget in critical zone was simulated, using codes SURFBAL and HYDRUS-1D. SURFBAL generates upper boundary conditions for unsaturated flow modelling with HYDRUS-1D, taking into account snow accumulation and melting as well as topsoil freezing, which are important processes that affect runoff generation and the infiltration of meltwater. Water budget and groundwater recharge simulations based on long-term meteorological data and soil and vegetation parameters, typical for the investigated region. The simulation results for the historical and modern periods were compared to find out the impact of climate change on the average annual and seasonal averages of surface runoff, evapotranspiration, and groundwater recharge, as well as to assess latitudinal differences in water budget changes. The results of the simulation showed, that despite a significant increase in air temperature, groundwater recharge in the southern regions did not change, but even increased up to 50–60 mm/year in the central and northern regions of ER. There are two main reasons for this. First, the observed increase in air temperature is compensated by a decrease in wind speed, so there was no significant increase in evapotranspiration in the modern period. Also, the observed increase in air temperature and precipitation in winter is the main reason for the increase in groundwater recharge, since these climate changes lead to an increase in water infiltration into the soil in the cold period, when there is no evapotranspiration.

Currently, the principle of sustainable use of forests is a fundamental direction in the management of natural resources. Solving the problems of sustainable development of forestry in the European North involves ensuring the quality reproduction of forest resources. The main parts of silvicultural production are procurement and preparation of seeds; growing planting stock, creation of new stands and agricultural tending of them. The goal of the federal project “Forest Conservation” is to ensure the balance of forest felling and reproduction in the ratio of 100 % by 2024. The emphasis is on the use of ball-rooted planting stock for artificial reforestation. Information gap on the long-term prospects of its use, as well as the lack of data on the results of long-term observations of growth and condition of forest crops created by seedlings with a lump of substrate, and comparison of such seedlings with traditional planting stock, especially in northern conditions, update the topic of research. The research purpose is to identify conditions for obtaining high-quality planting stock, as well as to assess the possibility of successful restoration of pine on felling sites in the north of the European part of Russia by creating forest crops using regional intensive technologies, based on the results of long-term technologies. The main objects of observations are nurseries of the region, the procedures used in them and the experimental planting of pine trees in the Kargopol and Arkhangelsk forestries in 2000–2001. Preservation, diameter, height, and volume were determined in dynamics in the areas of crops created from various types of planting stock (seedlings, plantlet, ball-rooted planting stock). The counts were carried out with several repetitions and dividing plants into healthy, weak and dry. Wood flaws of pine trunks were also noted and natural regeneration was recorded. Based on the research materials, the possibility of successful restoration of pine trees on felling sites in the north of the European part of Russia is shown using regional intensive technologies for the production of various planting stock and the creation of forest crops. This will reduce the period of transfer of young trees to natural conditions and increase the productivity of plantations. Comparison of average diameters and heights for all accounting periods indicates the influence of the type of planting stock and density of planting on the growth and development of trees. During the observation period, plantlets lead in all respects. Their height and diameter is 20–44 % higher than that of yearling seedlings, and in terms of stem volume the difference with other types of planting stock reaches 1.9–2.9 times.

In a changing climate, phenological observations are gaining new importance. They can tell what changes are taking place in certain environmental conditions. The studies were conducted in 2019 within the territory of the Republic of Mordovia (the center of the European part of Russia). Beer traps (beer as a bait) were used to collect Diptera. The material was collected in the period from April to October in different forest biotopes (pine forest, lime forest, aspen forest, birch forest and oak forest) and the air temperature was recorded at the same time. In total, more than 14.000 specimens of Diptera were recorded. Overall, 29 families were recorded. The largest number of families was observed for birch (23 families) and pine (24 families) forests, the smallest number – in aspen forest (16 families). The families Muscidae, Drosophilidae, Calliphoridae had the largest number of captured individuals (44.5%, 35.2%, 7.6% of the total number of individuals respectively). The highest number of individuals was captured in oak forest. The dynamics of abundance in all biotopes were similar and were characterized by the same number of declines and rises. The first small significant peak in the number of Diptera occurred in the first half of summer. A slight increase in the number of specimenі occurred in mid-June. In the second half of September, there was a gradual increase in the number and the maximum peak was recorded in mid-October, then there was a decline. The autumn increase in the number of Diptera in all five biotopes exceeded the summer peak by several times. This dynamic was typical for most families. However, species from the family Lonchaeidae had the peak in July. For our better understanding of the changes in the seasonal dynamics of the number of Diptera, long-term observations in different climatic zones are needed.

The analysis of the level and long-term dynamics of the incidence of ixodic tick-borne borreliosis, the population's appeal for tick bites and the infection of mites with Borrelia burgdorferi sl. in the Moscow, Ryazan and Tula regions. An annual increase in the incidence of Lyme disease in the direction from the south to the north, from the forest-steppe to the southern taiga, was determined, due to the frequency of contacts of the population with Ixodes persulcatus Shulze 1930 and I. ricinus L. 1758. At the same time, a statistically significant relationship between the incidence of mites infection and the incidence of Lyme disease in The studied regions are not observed. The obtained results testify to a tense epidemic situation in the center of the European part of Russia and the need to implement all components of surveillance for the natural foci of the Lyme disease.

The processes of genesis of coniferous forests are widely investigating using molecular markers. Many studies are based on the analysis of microsatellite loci, which are acknowledged as the most reproducible and polymorphic co-dominant molecular markers. This study is aimed to establish the possibility of using microsatellite markers to determine differentiation between Norway and Siberian spruce (Picea abies and Picea obovata). Another task of this research was to assess the degree of genetic isolation of regional spruce population in the territory of European part of the Russian Federation. This study shows that using a large number of microsatellite markers allows to divide the sample of spruce collected from European part of Russia and Siberia in two genetic clusters, corresponding to Picea abies and Picea obovata. The microsatellite loci analyzed in the study can be used to assess genetic diversity and geographic origin of spruce trees and determine the origin of wood and planting material of Norway and Siberian spruce.
