Abstract Objective: the aim of this study to evaluate the microhardness and color change (ΔE) of composite resins, light cured with different LEDs, submitted to staining drink. Materials and Methods: Two composite resins with lucerin-TPO (Tetric N-Ceram/ Vit-l-escence) and camphorquinone (Filtek Z350) were select. Specimens (n=120) were prepared. Then were photopolymerized with LED of singlewave or polywave. Microhardness and color evaluations were performed before and after chalanges. Data were evaluated by two-way ANOVA, Tukey's test (p≤0,05). Results: No statistically significant difference between the two generations of LEDs was found for microhardness data. Regarding the ΔE, statistical difference between the two LEDs was observed for Tetric N- Ceram and Filtek Z350. Conclusion: Compostion of composites appears to have more influence on analyses than the type of LEDs.

AbstractIntroductionTemporary restorative materials are widely used, however, little is know about their color stability.Objectiveto evaluate the color stability of the following temporary restorative materials: acrylic and bis-acrylic resins after immersion in pigmenting solutions for different periods of storage.Material and methodFour materials were tested (Dêncor/Clássico, Protemp 4/3M ESPE; Structur 2 SC/Voco; Luxatemp AM Plus/DMG) and 30 test specimens (15 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick) per material were fabricated. They were divided according to the storage medium (artificial saliva, saliva + cola type soda, and saliva + coffee) and storage time intervals (2, 5, 7 and 15 days). Color measurements were made before and after immersions, with use of a spectrophotometer, by means of the CIE L*a*b* system. The data were analyzed by the analysis of variance and the Tukey Test, at a level of significance of 5%.ResultAcrylic resin presented greater color stability in comparison with bis-acrylic resins (p<0.001). When bis-acrylic resins were compared no significant difference was observed between the resins Structur and Luxatemp (p=0.767). As regards solutions tested, coffee showed the highest color change values (p<0.001), and the longer the storage time interval, the greater was the color change in all the temporary restorative materials analyzed (p<0.001).ConclusionAcrylic resin presented greater color stability in comparison with bis-acrylic resins (p<0.001). Coffee caused the greatest color change, and immersion time was determinant in color stability of the temporary materials analyzed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface properties of orthodontic resins with and without fluoride. Forty disks, measuring 2 mm thick by 6 mm in diameter, were made of 4 bracket-bonding composite resins (n=10): Transbond Plus Color Change-3M/Unitek (TPCC); Transbond XT- 3M/Unitek (TXT), Orthocem -FGM (OC); Orthocem UV Trace-FGM (OCUV). The discs were photoactivated for 40 seconds with irradiance of 450 mW/cm2 and manually polished in sequence by silicon carbide sandpapers with 1200 and 2000 grain size and finished with diamond paste and felt disc. The surface microhardness analysis was performed using a Shimadzu Micro Hardness Tester HMV-2,000 (Shimadzu Corporation, Kyoto, Japan) with a load of 50 gF and a 5 second penetration time. Surface roughness readings were taken using a Surf Corder Roughness Meter (SE 1700- Kosaka, Lisboa-Portugal). For data analysis, ANOVA (one-way) was used, followed by Tukey's post-test (?=0.05). The microhardness results showed a difference (p?0.05) in the means of the orthodontic resins between TPCC and TXT with the other groups. After the surface roughness analysis, the averages showed that TPCC resin showed higher roughness compared to OC and OCUV (p?0.05), and there was no statistical difference with TXT. It was concluded that statistically the composite resins with fluoride showed significant difference regarding hardness and roughness.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to assess the effect of an optical whitening toothpaste on color stability of microhybrid, nanofilled, and microfilled composite resins and resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) cement in comparison of two other toothpastes. Materials and Methods In this experimental study, disc-shaped composite samples were fabricated. The samples were then polished using silicon carbide papers. Twenty-seven samples of each material were fabricated and subjected to colorimetry using a spectrophotometer. Each group of material was then divided into three subgroups for the application of conventional whitening and whitening containing blue covarine toothpastes. One operator brushed the samples with an electric soft toothbrush with circular motion twice a day, each time for 30 seconds. Colorimetry was performed at 0, 1, 7, 30, and 90 days. Statistical Analysis Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), one-way ANOVA, and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) test were used for statistical analysis. Results The interaction effect of type of restorative material and time on ∆E was not significant at baseline or 1 day (p > 0.05). The effect of type of toothpaste on ∆E was not significant at baseline or 1 day (p = 0.78) but the effect of type of material was significant (p < 0.05). The toothpastes had significantly different effects on ∆E of Z250 at all time points (p < 0.05) except for ∆E0–30 (p = 0.106). The toothpastes had significantly different effects on ∆E of Z350 and Gradia at all time points (p < 0.05). The same was true for RMGI except for ∆E0–7 (p = 0.43) and ∆E0–90 (p = 0.52). The majority of color changes caused by toothpastes were not clinically perceivable (∆E < 3.3), except for ∆E0–90 by the whitening toothpaste (∆E = 9), ∆E0–90 by the conventional toothpaste for Z350 (∆E = 3.9), and ∆E0–1 by the whitening toothpaste for RMGI (∆E = 3.7). Conclusion The color change of all composite samples was not clinically perceivable (<3.3) at all time points, which shows that the tested toothpastes do not cause a significant change in color of composite materials.

In this study, the wear characteristics of five different dental composite resins cured by conventional halogen light and LED light sources were investigated. Five different dental composite resins of Surefil, Z100, Dyract AP, Fuji II LC and Compoglass were worn against a zirconia ceramic ball using a pin-on-disk type wear tester with 15 N contact force in a reciprocal sliding motion of sliding distance of 10 mm/cycle at 1Hz under the room temperature dry condition. The wear variations of dental composite resins were linearly increased as the number of cycles increased. It was observed that the wear resistances of these specimens were in the order of Dyract AP > Surefil > Compoglass > Z100 > Fuji ı LC. On the morphological observations by SEM, the large crack formation on the sliding track of Fuji ıLC specimen was the greatest among all resin composites. Dyract AP showed less wear with few surface damage. There is no significant difference in wear performance between conventional halogen light curing and light emitting diodes curing sources. It indicates that a light emitting diodes (LED) source can replace a halogen light source as curing unit for composite resin restorations.

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the color change ∆E of the dental enamel following treatment with 2 kinds of protector (icon infiltrant, clinpro varnish) before fixed orthodontic treatment to avoid the possible white spot lesions. Materials and Methods: Fifty four subjects treated with fixed appliances were divided into 3 groups: the 1st group was control, while the 2nd and 3rd groups were treated with icon infiltrant and clinpro varnish before bonding procedure, respectively. Color parameters (L,a,b) were recorded for the middle and gingival thirds before and after bonding procedure to get the ∆E of each group. Results: One-way ANOVA test showed a non-significant difference in ∆E between the 3 groups at p value <0.05, while there were highly significant differences in value of ∆E between middle thirds and the gingival thirds in all groups. Conclusion: The icon infiltrant and clinpro varnish have no effect on color of the enamel when used before the bonding procedure. Color change ∆E occurring in middle third is higher than that of the gingival third. Keywords: Color change, protector, white spot lesions

The carapace color of newborn big-headed turtles (Platysternon megacephalum) is polymorphic and usually consists of two phenotypes: yellowish brown and olive green. As the turtles grew, over the first year of life, its carapace gradually turned from yellowish brown to chestnut brown, or from olive green to dark brown, depending on the phenotype. Meanwhile, the turtle’s plastron remained an orange and black pattern and did not change much. In this study, we primarily used HE staining to observe the carapace color change with age in big-headed turtle juveniles. We took the carapace marginal scute tissues twice from the same turtles before and after the carapace color change. Histological observations show that in the marginal scutes of the four tested turtles with different carapace color phenotypes, melanin granules are all concentrated in the dermal layer underneath the dorsal corneous layer, but rarely on the ventral side. Melanin deposits in the dorsal corneous layer were found to increase as the corneous layers thickened, while the melanin deposits in the ventral corneous layer did not change significantly. However, there was no significant difference in melanin deposition in the epidermis and dermis of the carapace among the yellowish brown, chestnut brown, olive green, and dark brown big-headed turtles. The results of our study indicate that the carapace color darkening in big-headed turtles may not be due to changes in melanin content of the carapace, but is the result of melanin accumulation and superposition in the dorsal corneous layer.

Abstract Background: In order to gain an insight into LPI in iron metabolism microenvironment in MDS. Materials and Methods: We performed ELISA, quantitative RT-PCR, flow cytometry, MRI T2* assays to test LPI, iron biochemical parameters and LIC among 22 MDS patients. Results: LPI has a statistical difference (P<0.001 by ANOVA), which decreased gradually, among three groups, while no difference was found in ASF (P=0.086 by ANOVA). After DFO treatment, serum hepcidin expression increased from 301.26±59.78¦Ìg/L to 340.33±49.78¦Ìg/L (P=0.032), while hepcidin/ASF was up-regulated gradually from 0.16±0.08 to 0.22±0.03 (P=0.045). APAF-1 expression (P=0.047) and erythroid apoptosis rate (P=0.009) decreased significantly, respectively. No statistical difference was found in EPO (P=0.247) and GDF15 expression (P=0.172). LIC dropped from 9.83±4.84mg/g dry weight to 6.28±4.01mg/g dry weight (P<0.001). No significant difference was found in cardiac T2* (P=0.594). LPI has a closer connection to LIC than ASF (r=0.739, P<0.001 vs. r=0.321, P=0.034). (Figure1) Conclusion: LPI seems to be a real-time indicator which reflects body iron loading status instantaneously. Despite the limited knowledge available on LPI speciation in different types and degrees of IO, LPI measurements can be and are in fact used for identifying systemic IO and for initiating/adjusting chelation regimens. Before DFO treatment, a patient had an abnormal liver function. Along with iron chelation therapy, his LPI decreased rapidly. Meanwhile, his ALT dropped and his hemoglobin increased gradually. Furthmore, his LIC decreased after receiving DFO treatment. Lane a: LIC was 9.97mg/g dry weight on week 0. Lane b: LIC was 5.81mg/g dry weight on week 26. Figure 1. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of liquid polishing system (BisCover) on color stability of the bleached enamel upon exposure to a staining agent-red wine. Forty specimens were prepared. They were divided into 2 groups and different procedures, including only bleaching with Opalescence PF (PF) or Opalescence regular (R) gels, and application of BisCover after blaeching (PF-B, R-B) were used. Unbleached specimens were served as control groups (control-1 and control-2). The specimens were stored for 48 h in red wine. The color of all specimens was measured before and after exposure with a spectrophotometer, and total color change (ΔE*) were calculated. The data were analyzed with a one-way ANOVA and the means were compared by Tukeys post hoc analysis (α=0.05). PF-B and R-B groups demonstrated significantly less color change than PF and R groups. the control-1 and control-2 groups had the least color change. No significant difference were observed between PF and R group. BisCover improved the color stability of bleached enamel in red wine.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the color stability of three composite resins of two different shades (A3 and C3) cured with either a quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) or a light emitting diode (LED) source. Forty specimens (20 x 2 mm) were prepared for each composite (Tetric Ceram®, Heliomolar® and Esthet-X®), being 20 for each shade. In each group, 10 specimens were light-cured using the QTH unit and 10 with the LED source. The shade of the materials was evaluated before and after submitting the specimens to artificial accelerated aging (4 h UV-B/4 h condensing vapor), using a reflection spectrophotometer. deltaE means were calculated and analyzed statistically by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's test at 5% significance level. Both A3 and C3 shades of Esthet-X composite resin showed the lowest color change when cured with the QTH light, while Tetric C3 cured with the QTH light showed the highest color change.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of different types of hysterectomy on UI symptoms, quality of life and sexual functions using dedicated questionnaires. We investigated a correlation between the urethral length (UL), UI symptoms and the length of the cervix (left after LSH and SH) with sexual functions. The study enrolled 500 consecutive women referred for hysterectomy: 121 underwent VH, 171 underwent LSH, 96 underwent SH, 68 underwent TAH, and 44 underwent TLH. The patients filled in the UI-specific questionnaires and FSFI before and 12 months after hysterectomy. The UL was measured by introital ultrasound before and 12 months after hysterectomy. Before surgery, 137 out of 399 (34.3%) patients had UI symptoms; afterwards, 139 (34.8%) indicated the same (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the UL in the patients before and after the procedure, and the cervix length did not differ between patients after LSH and SH. When the entire investigated population was analyzed, a significant improvement of the QoL was found on the IIQ-7. Hysterectomy performed due to benign diseases has effects on UI regardless of the surgical technique used. The UI symptoms improved only in the patients after LSH. The UL measured 12 months after hysterectomy did not change.
