Sorting Out Villainy
Throughout its history, the cinematic medium has shown great potential as an instrument of dehumanization and demonization. In this chapter, enemy image construction is investigated as both a discursive construct and a set of textual practices in popular film. Hoping to create effective villains for their stories, filmmakers accentuate such characters’ dangerousness and deviance to the social norm. The author provides a framework for the analysis of enemy image construction in cinema by offering an introduction into how villain-characters get formally articulated as enemies, and how such practices can be subjected to further scholarly analysis.
