Total seed proteins of 10 Acacia species were examined by SDS–PAGE. The protein patterns showed qualitative and quantitative differences among the taxa analysed. The main protein components of most species examined had MW's in the range of 38.5–49.0 × 103. Subgenus Aculeiferum differed from subg. Acacia in the presence of a high concentration of proteins in the range of 20–24.5 × 103. Hierarchical clustering of the 10 taxa was undertaken, based on Jaccard distances calculated from electrophoretic data. The species grouped in two main clusters, representing the two subgenera of Acacia that occur in America, namely subg. Acacia and subg. Aculeiferum. The taxonomic placement of Acacia emilioana, a species with uncertain sectional affinity within subg. Aculeiferum, is discussed.

Hybrid summer rape (Brassica napus L.) seed production blocks were established at two locations in Manitoba in 1986 and 1987 to examine the effect of distance from the pollen source on seed yield, (both total and hybrid) and percent hybridity of seed produced on rows of a male sterile line of the open pollinated population B. napus cultivar, Marnoo, possessing the pol cytoplasmic male sterility inducing cytoplasm. A 10:1 ratio of male sterile line (A-line) to pollen parent was employed. Leaf cutter bees (Megachile rotundata F.) were used as the pollen vector between the two parents. In 1986, no significant differences in total seed yield were found among A-line rows, while in 1987, significant differences in total seed yields of A-line rows were found. Differences in hybrid seed yields among A-line rows were significant for all locations and years. Leaf cutter bees were found to be effective pollinators of the A-line plants. Less than half and less than a third of the seed produced on the A-line rows in 1986 and 1987, respectively, was hybrid seed. The high percentage of non-hybrid seed present in the seed lot may have been due to incomplete male sterility of the Marnoo A-line population. Total seed yields, hybrid seed yields and percent hybridity all declined linearly as distance from the pollen source increased. Improvement in the degree of male sterility of the Marnoo A-line population and/or a reduction in the 10:1 ratio of parents, and subsequent maximum A-line row to R-line row distance, will be necessary if hybrid summer rape seed production using this pol CMS A-line is to be commercially viable.Key words: Brassica napus L., CMS, hybrid, hybridity

Total seed proteins in two safflower species (Carthamus tinctorius L. and C. lanatus L) have been separated by the SDS-PAGE method. Their molecular masses ranged from 120 to 20 kDa. All C. tinctorius genotypes under study exhibited identical electrophoretic patterns which differed from the pattern exhibited by the wild species C. lanatus in the number and position of protein bands. Differences in protein profiles occurred in regions around 60 kDa, from 43 to 36 kDa and around 30 kDa. Statistically significant differences in seed protein content were found among safflower genotypes from different countries as well as among genotypes from the same country but from different sites. The highest seed protein content was found in a genotype originating from the USA.

Aim. The aim of the work was to compare the polymorphism of commercial varieties and populations of B. napus growing outside cultivation to assess the genetic diversity of feral rapeseed populations in Belarus. Methods. The study assessed genetic diversity according to the data of 7 microsatellite loci genotyping. Results. The results indicate a greater genetic diversity in feral oilseed rape populations. An analysis of the structure of the genotypes distribution in the STRUCTURE software showed the division into three clusters – commertial varieties, feral populations and samples of B. rapa. Conclusions. The established genetic divergence between feral populations and commercial varieties indicates that feral oilseed rape is able to maintain persistent populations in Belarus. In practice, this should be taken into account when assessing the environmental risk when transgenic rape is released into the environment. And in the cultivation of transgenic rapeseed, special attention should be paid to measures to prevent the occurrence of its free-growing populations. The study assessed the genetic diversity of commercial varieties and feral populations of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) grown in the Republic of Belarus according to the genotyping data of 7 microsatellite loci – Na12D08, Ol12D04-1, Ol12D04-2, Ra2A05, Na10H03, Na14H11, Ol11B05. The following parameters were calculated: the average number of alleles per locus, the effective number of alleles, the levels of expected and observed heterozygosity, % of polymorphic loci. The results indicate a greater genetic diversity in feral oilseed rape populations. According to the cluster analysis, one feral population fell into a cluster of commercial varieties and demonstrated similarities with the variety Atora, which indicates its recent wildness and the preservation of the genetic characteristics inherent in cultivated varieties. The variety Mercedes was clustered together with samples of feral populations, which may indicate its hybrid origin. An analysis of the structure of the genotype distribution in the Structure software showed the division into three clusters – commercial varieties, feral populations and samples of B. rapa. The established genetic divergence between feral populations and commercial varieties indicates that feral oilseed rape is able to maintain persistent populations inBelarus. In practice, this should be taken into account while assessing the environmental risk when transgenic rape is released into the environment. When cultivating transgenic rapeseed, special attention should be paid to measures to prevent the occurrence of its free-growing populations.

The protein profiles of tomato seeds from sub-species ( subsp. cultum Brezh., subsp. subspontaneum Brezh. and subsp. spontaneum Brezh.) were analyzed using SDS-PAGE technique. Electrophoreograms and denzitograms of total, soluble and non-soluble proteins of 31 different samples have showed quantitative and qualitative differences. Qualitative differences in electrophoregrams of total seed proteins refer to protein fragments in zone A (114 kDa, 83 kDa and 65 kDa) and protein fragment in zone C (17 kDa). Qualitative differences in electrophoregrams of soluble seed proteins refer to protein fragment in zone A (94 kDa). Qualitative differences in electrophoregrams of nonsoluble seed proteins refer to protein fragments with molecular weights of: 210 kDa, 85 kDa, 67 kDa and 26 kDa.
