In recent years, the chess game has begun to develop successful programming solutions. Computers were programmed to play chess in the middle of the twentieth century. Computer skills have become better and higher than the skills of chess players in the world, and from here this study has made it possible to find the optimal solution for the four square pieces in the form of a letter (L) without repetition and quick access to fill the sites and voids and to complete the entire area. It is our task to cover a (2n×2n) Chessboard with L-shaped tiles each tile is a (2×2) square with a (1×1) square removed from one corner. We are working to cover the Chessboard in such a way that there is a single 1×1 box left in the ‘corner’ of the Chessboard (by the 'corner' we mean one corner of the box should be uncovered). In this task, we will solve this problem with three approaches, the C programming approach, the second by dividing and conquering approach and the last by a greedy method approach. Three algorithms were used and a comparison was made between them, and the fastest method was achieved by a greedy method, with eight cases comparing one and four cases, respectively.

AbstractSince December 2019, a novel coronavirus responsible for a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) is accountable for a major pandemic situation. The emergence of the B.1.1.7 strain, as a highly transmissible variant has accelerated the world-wide interest in tracking SARS-CoV-2 variants’ occurrence. Similarly, other extremely infectious variants, were described and further others are expected to be discovered due to the long period of time on which the pandemic situation is lasting. All described SARS-CoV-2 variants present several mutations within the gene encoding the Spike protein, involved in host receptor recognition and entry into the cell. Hence, instead of sequencing the whole viral genome for variants’ tracking, herein we propose to focus on the SPIKE region to increase the number of candidate samples to screen at once; an essential aspect to accelerate diagnostics, but also variants’ emergence/progression surveillance. This proof of concept study accomplishes both at once, population-scale diagnostics and variants' tracking. This strategy relies on (1) the use of the portable MinION DNA sequencer; (2) a DNA barcoding and a SPIKE gene-centered variant’s tracking, increasing the number of candidates per assay; and (3) a real-time diagnostics and variant’s tracking monitoring thanks to our software RETIVAD. This strategy represents an optimal solution for addressing the current needs on SARS-CoV-2 progression surveillance, notably due to its affordable implementation, allowing its implantation even in remote places over the world.

The question of place is becoming more important in an increasingly globalised, cosmopolitan world. Has the global flow of culture and the movement of people around the world meant a decline in the importance of place as a form of identity? Have local, regional and national identities lost their significance for people? The article begins to explore these key issues. In particular it looks at Ireland which, from the 1990s, moved from being relatively insular and homogeneous to becoming one of the most globalised societies. The authors use a mixed method approach. First they examine data from the International Social Survey Project (ISSP) to see if there is any evidence of a decline in identity with place, how this varies between rural and urban dwellers, and levels of age and education. They then use findings from a qualitative study to examine the complex ways in which people talk about and identify with place, where they were brought up, where they live now and being Irish. The findings show that level of identity with place is still strong in Ireland and in some cases is increasing. The authors argue that increased identification with the local is an equal and opposite reaction to globalisation.

In the present article we are going look at the interpretation of the theology of Muhammad Abduh (1849–1905) undertaken by the Indonesian scholar Harun Nasution (1919–1998). Nasution compares Abduh’s position to neo- Mutazilism, relying on the treatise “Risālah al- Tawḥid”. Nasution carries out a step-by-step interpretation of the most popular “exoteric” work of the Egyptian thinker, proving the rationalist character of his theological system. From the point of view of Nasution, the division of the human race into the elect and commoners characteristic of Abduh is intended to confi rm the special ontological status of people endowed with high culture and advanced intellectual abilities. The elect are able to comprehend the entire area of intelligible being, which includes both God with his attributes and the created world. From this follows the limited, confi rmatory character of Revelation. It does not so much reveal to people a hitherto unfamiliar truth as confi rms (legitimizes) the knowledge already available to the Elect. Nasution believes that Abduh’s views on human freedom and divine justice are in confl ict with Asharism. Man is the source of his own actions, he is given the freedom to independently determine his own destiny. Allah Almighty rules the world through the eternal laws of nature, sunan, and prefers not to interfere in the aff airs of people directly, although he is interested in their welfare. The article concludes with critical remarks challenging the interpretive model proposed by Nasution and other neoMutazilite scholars of Abduh.

In Nigeria, during the agitation for Biafra by the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra between 2013 and 2017, the role of Facebook in the dissemination of hate messages by the protagonists and those in opposition to the agitation raised concern about the role of social media as a tool for the spread of hate messages. It is against this background that this research was designed to evaluate the role of Facebook in the spread of hate messages over the agitation for the separate state of Biafra. The study adopted the exploratory design and the mix method approach; both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed. For the quantitative data, 400 questionnaires were administered on purposively sampled respondents. The surveys were analyzed using simple percentages and frequency distribution. Also, content analysis of some purposively selected Facebook messages was carried out. In the end, the research found that hate messages were propagated through Facebook using six major channels during the agitation for Biafra between 2013 and 2017. They include; Facebook Personal Profiles, Status Updates and Wall Postings, Facebook Group Chats, Facebook Video Uploads, Individual Comments and Likes, Video Shares and Reposts, and sharing of articles and links to other social media platforms. In line with its findings, the research recommended that Facebook should review its community standards and policies on postings of hate messages through its medium and also strengthen its regulatory mechanisms to ensure that it does not provide a platform anymore for propagators of hate messages in Nigeria and around the world.

In this chapter, the authors propose a new approach to analyze the Solid Transportation Problem (STP). This new approach considers the multi-choice programming into the cost coefficients of objective function and stochastic programming, which is incorporated in three constraints, namely sources, destinations, and capacities constraints, followed by Cauchy's distribution for solid transportation problem. The multi-choice programming and stochastic programming are combined into a solid transportation problem, and this new problem is called Multi-Choice Stochastic Solid Transportation Problem (MCSSTP). The solution concepts behind the MCSSTP are based on a new transformation technique that will select an appropriate choice from a set of multi-choice, which optimize the objective function. The stochastic constraints of STP converts into deterministic constraints by stochastic programming approach. Finally, the authors construct a non-linear programming problem for MCSSTP, and by solving it, they derive an optimal solution of the specified problem. A realistic example on STP is considered to illustrate the methodology.

I had the good fortune to work closely with Alan Turing and to know him well for the last 12 years of his short life. It is a rare experience to meet an authentic genius. Those of us privileged to inhabit the world of scholarship are familiar with the intellectual stimulation furnished by talented colleagues. We can admire the ideas they share with us and are usually able to understand their source; we may even often believe that we ourselves could have created such concepts and originated such thoughts. However, the experience of sharing the intellectual life of a genius is entirely different; one realizes that one is in the presence of an intelligence, a sensitivity of such profundity and originality that one is filled with wonder and excitement. Alan Turing was such a genius, and those, like myself, who had the astonishing and unexpected opportunity created by the strange exigencies of the Second World War to be able to count Turing as colleague and friend will never forget that experience, nor can we ever lose its immense benefit to us. Before the war, in 1935–36, Turing had done fundamental work in mathematical logic and had invented a concept that has come to be known as the ‘universal Turing machine’ (see Chapter 6). His purpose was to make precise the notion of a computable mathematical function, but he had in fact provided a blueprint for the most basic principles of computer design and for the foundations of computer science. I joined the distinguished team of mathematicians and first-class chess players working on the Enigma code in January 1942. Alan Turing was the acknowledged leading light of that team. However, I must emphasize that we were a team—this was no one-man show! Indeed, Turing’s contribution was somewhat different from that of the rest of the team, being more concerned with improving our methods, especially the machines we used to help us, and less concerned with our daily output of deciphered messages. It was due to the efforts of Turing and the entire team that Churchill was able to describe our work as ‘my secret weapon’.

This chapter proposes a new method to obtain optimal solution using satisfactory approach in uncertain environment. The optimal solution is obtained by using possibilistic linear programming approach and intelligent computing by MATLAB?. The optimal solution for profit function, index quality and worker satisfaction index in construction industry is considered. Decision maker and implementer tabulate the final possibilistic and realistic outcome for objective functions respect to level of satisfaction and vagueness for forecasting and planning. When the decision maker finds the optimum parameters with acceptable degree of satisfaction, he/she can apply the confidence of gaining much profit in terms of helping the public with high quality and least cost products. The proposed fuzzy membership function allows the implementer to find a better arrangement for the equipments in the production line to fulfill the wanted products in an optimum way.

Power-split drive represents a class of Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that combines the convenience of CVT with the high overall transmission efficiency. In its hybrid configuration, a high pressure accumulator is used to capture the braking energy that is regenerated to aid the engine power during the next propulsion event. Output coupled power split drives are particularly suited for small and medium duty vehicle applications. In this work, optimal power management strategy has been designed based on Dynamic Programming approach. Although the control strategy obtained by Dynamic Programming is non-causal, it represents the benchmark solution against which other implementable power management schemes can be compared. Another control strategy based on instantaneous optimization is also discussed where a given cost function is minimized at every instant. It results in a sub-optimal solution that is practical and implementable. Finally, Dynamic Programming results are utilized to discuss the possible improvements that can be made to the instantaneous optimization based control strategy.

Nowadays there is a tendency in the world industry to increase the number of open cast mines and the depth of work performed in them. In this regard, the problems of reliable and environmentally friendly transportation of extracted resources become especially urgent. Traditional motor vehicles is quite expensive, have problems with reliability and leads to a large gas pollution of the atmosphere, as well as the associated necessary stoppages of the open cast mine, which in turn leads to significant economic costs. The most optimal solution to these problems is the use of long conveyor lines for transportation. However, it is necessary to solve a number of problems one of them is related to the efficiency of the conveyor, which has a large length. This system needs to be controlled and monitored in real time. Thus, it is necessary to implement an automation system that meets all the specified requirements.
