The pedagogical potential of edublogging - blogging used as an educational tool and strategy - in music teaching has been explored in two previous studies; a third exploration has now been conducted. Recognising the social and contextual dimensions of knowledge and of the learning process, I reflect on all three experiences from a distributed cognition perspective, as opposed to a traditional cognitivist one. First, the edublogging scenario in each case will be seen through the lens of distributed cognition in respect of the nature of its learning community and culture. Then, these instructional endeavours are evaluated against the distributed cognition ideals. The pedagogy discussed here leverages the potential of edublogging to draw on distributed musical expertise. Apart from being in line with the current trend in learning theories towards emphasising distributed cognition and community based learning, such a pedagogical strategy in part also offers a viable solution to the challenge of addressing an increasingly expanding curriculum, whether in music or other subjects, due to knowledge explosion and the pressures of globalisation.

This chapter discusses civic engagement and service-learning in higher education at an urban, land-grant, Historically Black College/University, with a particular focus on the challenges and benefits of service-learning for commuter students. After a discussion of service learning and how it exemplifies the Kolb learning model and effective educational practice, the chapter presents illustrations of civic engagement and extracurricular community-based learning in an English BA program through its two student organizations – The Literary Club and Sigma Tau Delta-Alpha Epsilon Rho. The chapter also provides an example of how service-learning has been implemented in a General Education program and specifically in a writing course. The chapter highlights the partnerships with community organizations that have developed, presents reflective testimonials about the impact of these experiences, provides recommendations for strengthening community-based learning, and concludes that service-learning/community-based learning results in a sense of community for all participants.

Learning communities have a positive impact on the development of the pedagogical competence of prospective mathematics teacher students. However, the nature of competition between students is more dominant in universities. This study aims to develop a valid and practical lesson study for learning community-based learning environments to improve the pedagogical competence of student mathematics teacher candidates. This study used the Rowntree model development research design and Tessmer's formative evaluation model, including self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one evaluation, and small group evaluation. Data collection techniques used walkthrough, observation, documentation, questionnaires, interviews, and tests. The results showed that the learning environment based on the lesson study for the learning community that was developed had met valid and practical criteria and had a potential effect in improving the pedagogical abilities of student mathematics teacher candidates. Based on data analysis, the pedagogical competence of most of the students was good, with details: 94.16% of students had the competence to prepare a good lesson plan. The competence to carry out learning activities well has been mastered by 91.66% of students. Meanwhile, the understanding of the lesson study for the learning community has reached 82.5%. These results indicate that the learning community among fellow students as a lesson study for learning a community-based learning environment can improve the pedagogical competence of student mathematics teacher candidates.

AbstractThe essay argues that resources in Scripture, tradition, and social theory are important but insufficient to the task of teaching social ethics. Liberation ethics promotes not only diverse epistemologies to evaluate the structures that mediate social relations, but also moral courage to execute social responsibility. Given this agenda, teaching social ethics also requires community-based learning experiences, democratic classrooms, and the social commitment of the academy. Drawing on student writing and the example of the author's own academic institution, the essay argues that multiple resources and sites are needed to educate students in ethical theory and moral courage.

This concept paper is organized into three sections followed by a brief summary. The three sections are: (a) overview of the effectiveness of community-based learning research on teacher development, (b) overview of how community-based learning literature has informed coach development initiatives, and (c) suggestions for how a learning community approach could be practically implemented in a typical youth sport setting.
