This chapter analyses R. Judah the Pious's selection of ghost tales that pertain to the individual's status in the afterlife. It contrasts elements of his tales with rabbinic notions of the afterlife and compares them with those found in tales that circulated in the Germano-Christian environment. In both language and content, the Pietist tales of Sefer ḥasidim that describe the state of the individual in the hereafter contain elements that parallel those found in the early medieval visionary literature, as well as in the high medieval exempla collections. Popular motifs, such as vivid descriptions of corporeal torture by demonic agents, figure prominently in both Sefer ḥasidim and contemporary literary sources and artistic representations. Other shared characteristics include the principle of talio and the disproportion between sin and punishment. The problem of corporeality — already apparent in the areas of the dangerous dead and the attire of the dead — surfaces yet again both in Sefer ḥasidim and in the Christian exempla collections.

This article discusses the texts included in a new compilation entitled Sources of Slavic Pre-Christian Religion produced by scholars at the University Complutense in Madrid, Spain. This compilation responds to the challenges of previous historiographical difficulties inherent in the indirect sources available and in the previous incomplete collections of sources. Thus, this is the first work to consolidate all known sources on pagan practices of all the Slavic peoples—East, West, and South—and to include all known provenances of sources, including Latin, Greek, Slavonic, Old Icelandic, Arabic, and Persian. The resulting compilation reveals a more complex and sophisticated pre-Christian religion than previously assumed. In this article, Santos Marinas explains the reasoning behind the selection of the texts for this compilation and offers notable examples of some of the included sources on Slavic pre-Christian practices, particularly from Byzantine and Latin texts, that provide new insights into the sacred practices of the early medieval Slavic peripheries of Christendom.

Salmonelloses, which are associated with products from clinically healthy animals that undergone veterinary and sanitary observations and examinations and are secondary-contaminated in the process, transportation, processing and marketing, are at the forefront of the list of emerging food zoonoses. The haphazard use of antibiotics in agriculture contributes to the selection of resistant clones of microorganisms. The high resistance of strains of salmonella isolated from poultry production poses a real risk of transmission through the food chain to humans, as well as being perpetuated and passed on to subsequent generations of bacteria, expanding geographical areas as a result of globalization. Separation of Salmonella microorganisms from poultry production was carried out in accordance with GOST 31468-2012, antigenic profile of isolated isolates was determined according to the classification of Kaufmann-White, sensitivity of microorganisms to antibacterial preparations - according to MUK 4.2.1890-04. In the study of 503 samples of poultry production 42 isolates of microorganisms of the genus Salmonella were isolated, which amounted to 8.35% of the number of samples studied. Sensitivity to antimicrobial agents showed that 42% of the isolates were resistant to tetracyclines and only 5-16% were resistant to antibiotics of the II generation of fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin) and III generation of cephalosporins (cefotaxime, cefoxitin, ceftriaxone). The authors found out the change in resistance towards cephepium, ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin resistance in the secondary isolates of S. virhow. The study of biological properties, frequency of isolation and resistance to various AMF of Salmonella microorganisms is an integral part of the development of mechanisms for controlling the formation of resistance to antimicrobial agents.

AbstractNumerous ruins around the world lack the radiometric dating due to the scarcity of organic carbon. Here, we present results of radiocarbon dating of mortar samples from an early Medieval church Hohenrätien GR, Switzerland, which was dated to the early 6th century, based on typology. The method of dating mortars, which is currently applied at the ETH laboratory, involves sieving the crushed mortar, selection of grain size 45−63 μm and sequential dissolution resulting in four fractions of CO2 collected in a 3-second interval each. Two mortar samples, which were analyzed using sequential dissolution and one by dating a bulk of lime lump, resulted in a combined radiocarbon age of 1551±21 BP translating to the calendar age of 427−559 AD.

This chapter features a representative selection of additional kanbun poems composed by Giun and several other prominent monk-poets from the Sōtō and Rinzai schools in China and Japan. The work of those monks is particularly relevant for providing a context by which to understand the crucial role played by the fifth Eiheiji abbot in shaping the early-medieval history of Zen’s approach to studying Dōgen’s Treasury by appropriating Chinese poetic sources, including interpretations of the doctrine of the Five Ranks, and embracing key elements of the boundary-crossing Wanshi-ha movement’s literary standpoint for Zen training. Following an introductory discussion, two main parts of the chapter cover more than twenty translated verses in all.

Creation of allotetraploid cowberry-blueberry hybrids is a promising direction in Vacciniaceae breeding. However, obtaining such hybrids is difficult because of biological features of tetraploid cowberry. In this regard the aim of research was study of pollen viability of tetraploid cowberry, its crossing ability with different species and interspesific blueberry hybrid in various years, as well as based on the results obtained, selection of promising methods of growth stimulation of pollen tubes, hybrid seed setting and cultivation of hybrid seedlings. As a result of research it has been established that tetraploid cowberry is characterized by low productivity and pollen viability, although its viability may reach 10.7 % in some years. Hybrid seedlings gradually died off with growth. On the base of the data obtained it is proposed that a special technique be used to increase hybrid fruit setting (pollination of flowers by a mixture of pollen, pollination in different life spans of a flower, castration of flowers without removing a corolla, reciprocal crosses, spraying pollinated flowers by solutions of growth regulators and microelements) and cultivation of hybrid seedlings (in vitro culture).

Aim. An ancient dream of hemp farmers was the breeding of new varieties of monoecious hemp. The unexpected problem of hemp production has arisen the need to attract scientific breeding to create the world's first non-narcotic highly productive hemp. Methods. Measures of unconscious selection of plants in the period of threshing under the name "sichka" and "molochka" served as a prototype. The development of breeding methods was carried out in parallel to solve the problems of increasing the fiber content in the stems, the simultaneity of maturation, the creation of a new monoecious form of hemp, increase the yield of fiber and seeds and the removal of narcotically neutral new varieties. Results. Breeders of different generations researched and created new high-performance non-narcotic varieties of dioecious, simultaneously ripening and monoecious hemp varieties such as Hlukhivski 1, Hlukhivski 10, US 6, USO 1, USO 14, USO 16, Dniprovski odnodomni 6, USO 31, Hliana, Hlesia and others. Conclusions. Many years of cultivation of hemp and the creation of all new varieties of them showed that with a long substantiated study of this culture it is possible to obtain new information as yet unknown, due to the versatile differentiation of this culture by sexual types, openly showing the morphological and biological features of the sexes, representing gender forms that gradually change into one another, bringing researchers closer to new discoveries in genetics. Keywords: hemp, hemp forms, methods and ways of breeding, breeding varieties.

The article presents the results of long-term research on the genus Clematis (Clematis L.) in the Stavropol Botanical garden. Biological, morphological and ornamental characteristics of varieties are provided; recommendations on selection of assortment and application in vertical gardening are given. For the first time, in the soil-climatic conditions of the Stavropol upland, an introduction study of 29 clematis varieties from six garden groups was conducted. According to the results of a comprehensive assessment, the most stable and highly decorative varieties were selected. In-depth study, parameters that have a significant value in the analysis of ornamental and economic-valuable qualities of varieties were revealed. In the course of research, when evaluating ornamental features, much attention was paid to the shape of the perianth, the size and color of the flowers. It was found that 24 varieties have an open flower shape, and five varieties have a bell – shaped one. The number of sepals varies from 4 to 6-8. In the presented garden groups, 27 varieties have a simple perianth, two with terry flowers. The size of the flower is divided into large-flowered, with a flower size of more than 10 cm and medium-flowered-from 4-10 cm. The color is varied, with many shades, from white-pink-red to blue-purple. When evaluating the prospects of the variety, special attention is paid to the duration and productivity of flowering. Varieties of the Lanuginosa and Patens groups bloom profusely in MayJune on shoots of the previous year and in July-September on annual shoots. In the groups Viticella, Jackmanii, Integrifolia and Texensis, abundant and prolonged flowering occurs on the shoots of the current year. Life forms determine not only the appearance of plants, but also are a criterion for use in garden and Park construction. Varieties of the Integrifolia group are preferably used for decorating low objects. For vertical gardening of structures with a height of more than three meters and as single and group planting varieties of garden groups are recommended Jackmanii, Lanuginosa, Patens, Viticella. The studied assortment, which has a complex of valuable ornamental and economic-biological features, is recommended for use in ornamental gardening and landscaping in the Stavropol territory.
