The author of the reviewed book for the first time shows how and why film preferences of the inhabitants of Breslau in the years 1896–1932 and 1933–1945 differed in relation to the choices of cinema audiences in other European cities during the same period. He uses the POPSTAT statistical method proposed for this purpose by the German researcher Joseph Potter. He also uses the scientific ideas of „attraction cinema” developed by André Gaudreault. He bases his research on analyzing film success rankings and to measure viewer preferences.

Abstract. Many studies have revealed the stratification phenomenon of the topside ionospheric F2 layer using ground-based or satellite-based ionograms, which can show direct signs of this phenomenon. However, it is difficult to identify this phenomenon using the satellite-based in situ electron density data. Therefore, a statistical method, using the shuffle resampling skill, is adopted in this paper. For the first time, in situ electron density data, recorded by the same Langmuir probe onboard the Demeter satellite at different altitudes, are analyzed and a possible stratification phenomenon is identified using the proposed method. Our results show that the nighttime stratification, possibly a permanent phenomenon, can cover most longitudes near the geomagnetic equator, which is not found from the daytime data. The arch-like nighttime stratification decreases slowly on the summer hemisphere and thus extends a larger latitudinal distance from the geomagnetic equator. All results, obtained by the proposed method, indicate that the stratification phenomenon is more complex than what has previously been found. The proposed method thus is an effective one, which can also be used on similar studies of comparing fluctuated data.

A statistical method of analyzing for hybridization based on exponential growth curves is presented. It is pointed out that with "truly cross-sectional data" such as those on the sunfishes (genus Lepomis) reported here, it is possible to analyze for hybridization based on static variations separately from that based on the average growths of populations. The technique of statistical linear comparisons is extended to analyze for the degree of intermediacy of the hybrids as an alternative to the hybrid index approach. Applications of the statistical method of analyzing for hybridization based on the constants of exponential curves and of the method based on static allometry are shown on a real set of data for the first time.

This paper describes the design and application of a new statistical method for real-time syndromic surveillance, used by Public Health England. The Rising Activity, Multi-level Mixed effects, Indicator Emphasis (RAMMIE) statistical method was developed and tested alongside existing methods before being applied to a suite of syndromic surveillance in operation in England. The RAMMIE method has proved to be a reliable, effective method for generating automated alarms for syndromic surveillance. The multi-level models have enabled local models to be created for the first time across all systems and models have proved themselves to be robust across all the signals.

Transparent wood is a relatively new material. For the first time, it was created in 1992 by a German researcher Siegfried Fink. Back then he turned wood transparent to reveal its specific cavities for analytical purpose. But it was not until between 2015 and 2016 when Professor Lars Berglund from Swedish KTH University and Professor Liangbing Hu from University of Maryland developed a method to remove colour and some chemicals from small wood samples and added polymers to make it transparent. The material then has the higher strength than original wood while having a 90% transparency. In the future it can be used as an ecological building material which is significantly more biodegradable than plastic or glass. In the present article, examples of the possible use of transparent wood in the construction of structural elements in architecture are given. Examples of beam type load bearing elements and structural parts of the wall structures with use of transparent wood are presented.

The activity and creative work of Ukrainian activist, writer, teacher Ivanna Blazhkevych (1886“1977) in the context of the development of pre-school education as a factor of strengthening the state have been thoroughly investigated in the article. For the first time the periodization of main stages of life and development of cultural-educational and scientific ideas of Ivanna Blazhkevych were substantiated in the article. The basic directions of pedagogical and cultural-educational activity and creativity of I. Blazhkevych have been clarified: pre-school-pedagogical (organization of pre-school institutions; substantiation of methods of pre-school education; determination of requirements for kindergarteners-educators); educational (participation in the elimination of illiteracy), ethnographic (collection of ethnographic material: recording folk songs, legends, sayings); national-patriotic (preservation of national traditions, mother tongue); guardianship (assistance to local war victims, prisoners of war, establishing orphanages for children); economic (founding cooperatives; working as a director of the district union of cooperatives in Ternopil), literary (writing books for children).

Although the presence of annulate lamellae was noted in many cell types, including the rat spermatogenic cells, this structure was never reported in the Sertoli cells of any rodent species. The present report is based on a part of our project on the effect of torsion of the spermatic cord to the contralateral testis. This paper describes for the first time, the fine structural details of the annulate lamellae in the Sertoli cells of damaged testis from guinea pigs. One side of the spermatic cord of each of six Hartly strain adult guinea pigs was surgically twisted (540°) under pentobarbital anesthesia (1). Four months after induction of torsion, animals were sacrificed, testes were excised and processed for the light and electron microscopic investigations. In the damaged testis, the majority of seminiferous tubule contained a layer of Sertoli cells with occasional spermatogonia (Fig. 1). Nuclei of these Sertoli cells were highly pleomorphic and contained small chromatinic clumps adjacent to the inner aspect of the nuclear envelope (Fig. 2).

A new Zeiss TEM with an imaging Omega filter is a fully digitized, side-entry, 120 kV TEM/STEM instrument for materials science. The machine possesses an Omega magnetic imaging energy filter (see Fig. 1) placed between the third and fourth projector lens. Lanio designed the filter and a prototype was built at the Fritz-Haber-Institut in Berlin, Germany. The imaging magnetic filter allows energy-filtered images or diffraction patterns to be recorded without scanning using efficient area detection. The energy dispersion at the exit slit (Fig. 1) results in ∼ 1.5 μm/eV which allows imaging with energy windows of ≤ 10 eV. The smallest probe size of the microscope is 1.6 nm and the Koehler illumination system is used for the first time in a TEM. Serial recording of EELS spectra with a resolution < 1 eV is possible. The digital control allows X,Y,Z coordinates and tilt settings to be stored and later recalled.
