This chapter provides a tour of the Nation Ford locality, which was the seat of the Catawba Nation in the mid-eighteenth century. The floral, faunal, geological, and infrastructural aspects of the landscape significant to the Catawba Nation’s subsistence economy and town organization are highlighted. Information from archival maps, topological relationships, and datable artifacts together are presented to argue that two archaeological sites, 38Yk434 and 38Yk17, are likely the physical remains of the Catawba towns Nassaw-Weyapee and Charraw Town, respectively. Intrasite spatial analysis is conducted using sub-surface evidence of architecture, along with artifactual evidence of activity patterns, to define the units of analysis that will be used to examine the organization of Catawba craft production (chapter 6) and foodways activities (chapter 7).

The article is aimed at presentation of results of archaeological underwater excavations of remains of the early Medieval bridge on the stronghold island Oslborg. There are vestiges of the Slavic and early German stronghold on the Grosser Plòner Lake island near Plon in north Germany. This stronghold has been repeatedly mentioned by Adam of Bremen and Helmold of Bosau - the 11th and 12th century annalists. Underwater excavations, undertaken in two study zones of 75 square meters in total, resulted in discovery of the bridge remains which revealed themselves in the form of 228 posts being elements of its bearing construction placed on the lake bottom. Dendrochronological analysis of 79 posts indicates that the bridge was constructed in 975 AD and it was rebuilt many times afterwards. Trees for subsequent reconstructions were cut down in the years 994, 995, 1005, 1008, 1011, 1012, 1013, 1025 and for the last time in 1096 AD. The excavations revealed also an assemblage of Slavic and early German pottery as well as 56 artefacts including 14 spearheads and 6 axes. Abstract, Researches at Karama River Basin sites have been conducted for years which gave indication of intensive human occupation during Prehistoric period. Hence, it is necessary to reveal and to understand the reason behind this human occupation based on the correlation between morphology, site characteristics, and site distributions. Scientific method was applied to obtain data from the field and to conduct spatial analysis. Disturbance caused by erosion and morphologic changes led to archaeological data transformation and also affected physical environment of archaeological sites. However, that kind of disturbance did not reduce the the importance of physical environment as spatial analysis data. Spatial analysis of sites along the main stem of Karama River both in downstream region and upstream region indicates occupation landscape characteristics. These characteristics can be seen from the location of the occupation which was close to waterway alluvial morphology (hilltop, hill terrace, and river terrace), at relatively flat surface area, and along the riverside or river confluence. There are two highlighted factors from landscape characteristics to support human occupation: accessibility and protection. Accessibility means there is no difficulties to access natural resources and there is possible access to secure interaction between communities. Protection means the location is relatively safe or less affected by both natural and human hazards. Those factors were probably the main reasons to choose Karama River Basin for human settlement.Abstrak, Penelitian situs di kawasan Daerah Aliran Sungai (DAS) Karama, Sulawesi Barat, telah dilakukan selama bertahun-tahun dan menghasilkan indikasi aktivitas hunian yang intensif pada masa Prasejarah. Dengan demikian, perlu diupayakan mencari alasan di balik penghunian manusia di DAS Karama berdasarkan korelasi antara morfologi, karakteristik situs, dan distribusi situs. Metode saintifik diterapkan untuk mendapatkan data dari lapangan dan melakukan analisis spasial. Perubahan morfologi lokasi situs dan erosi di kawasan DAS Karama menyebabkan transformasi data arkeologi serta memengaruhi lingkungan fisik lokasi situs. Meskipun demikian, pengaruh tersebut tidak lantas mengurangi pentingnya komponen fisik lokasi situs sebagai data analisis spasial. Analisis korelasi data dari situs, baik di sepanjang aliran utama Sungai Karama di kawasan muara maupun di kawasan pedalaman, mengindikasikan karakteristik lanskap hunian. Karakteristik tersebut menunjukkan lokasi hunian berada pada morfologi aluvial sungai (puncak bukit, teras bukit, dan teras sungai), berada pada topografi lahan yang relatif datar dan berlokasi di tepi aliran utama sungai atau di tepi pertemuan sungai (confluence). Ada dua faktor utama yang mendukung kawasan DAS Karama sebagai lokasi hunian, yakni aksesibilitas dan keamanan. Faktor aksesibilitas meliputi kemudahan akses terhadap sumber daya alam dan akses yang memungkinkan terjadinya interaksi antarkomunitas. Faktor keamanan menunjukkan bahwa lokasi situs relatif terlindungi dari ancaman bencana alam dan manusia. Kedua faktor tersebut kemungkinan besar menjadi alasan utama manusia memilih kawasan DAS Karama sebagai lokasi hunian.

Abstract The development of digital technologies and the use of advanced photogrammetry programs for modeling archaeological excavations and sites have opened new possibilities for spatial analysis in archaeology and the reconstruction of archaeological contexts. In addition, these tools allow us to visually preserve the features of archaeological sites for future use and facilitate the dissemination of archaeological heritage to local communities and the general public. This paper summarizes 3D photographic visualization of three cave art sites (Los Cayucos and Cueva No. 1 in Punta del Este, Cuba, and José María Cave in the Dominican Republic) and two burial spaces (Canímar Abajo and Playa del Mango, Cuba) using photogrammetry software. The application of these novel methods at the cave art sites allowed us to visualize faint pictographs that were invisible to the naked eye, to better define the shapes of petroglyphs and to reconstruct the position of lost/removed panels. At the burial sites, 3D modeling allowed us to register the archaeological context with greater precision. The use of 3D modeling will improve spatial analysis and data safeguarding in Cuban archaeology. Moreover, 3D movies are an effective way to disseminate knowledge and connect local communities with their cultural heritage, while reducing the impact of public visits to remote or endangered sites.

Within the past 20 years, archaeobotanical research in the Eastern United States has documented an early agricultural complex before the dominance of the Mesoamerican domesticates (corn, beans, and squash) in late prehistoric and historic agricultural systems. This early agricultural complex consisted of domesticated plants such as Iva annua var.macrocarpa (Sumpweed or Marshelder), Hellanthus annuus (Sunflower) and Chenopodium berlandieri, (Goosefoot or Lasbsquarters), and heavily utilized plants such as Polygonum erectum (Erect Knotweed), Phalaris caroliniana (May grass), and Hordeum pusillum (Little Barley).Recent research involving the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) specifically on Chenopodium has established diagnostic traits of wild and domesticated species seeds. This is important because carbonized or uncarbonized seeds are the most commonly recovered Chenopodium material from archaeological sites. The diagnostic seed traits assist archaeobotanists in identification of Chenopodium remains and provide a basis for evaluation of Chenopodium utilization in a culture's subsistence patterns. With the aid of SEM, an analysis of Chenopodium remains from three Late Prehistoric sites in Northwest Iowa (Blood Run [Oneota culture], Brewster [Mill Creek culture], and Chan-Ya-Ta [Mill Creek culture]) has been conducted to: 1) attempt seed identification to a species level, 2) evaluate the traits of the seeds for classification as either wild or domesticated, and 3) evaluate the role of Chenopodium utilization in both the Oneota and Mill Creek cultures.

Fabrics recovered from archaeological sites often are so badly degraded that fiber identification based on physical morphology is difficult. Although diagenetic changes may be viewed as destructive to factors necessary for the discernment of fiber information, changes occurring during any stage of a fiber's lifetime leave a record within the fiber's chemical and physical structure. These alterations may offer valuable clues to understanding the conditions of the fiber's growth, fiber preparation and fabric processing technology and conditions of burial or long term storage (1).Energy dispersive spectrometry has been reported to be suitable for determination of mordant treatment on historic fibers (2,3) and has been used to characterize metal wrapping of combination yarns (4,5). In this study, a technique is developed which provides fractured cross sections of fibers for x-ray analysis and elemental mapping. In addition, backscattered electron imaging (BSI) and energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis (EDS) are utilized to correlate elements to their distribution in fibers.

The bibliography brings together more than 250 scientific papers and books written by Alwyne (Wyn) Wheeler over fifty years, from 1955–2006. This chronological list shows that from the beginning his research followed three themes: taxonomy of historically important fish collections; identification and distribution of the British and European fish fauna ; the status of British fishes in a changing environment. Until the mid-point in Wyn's career he published regularly on the identification of fish remains in archaeological sites in Britain and Europe. Wyn also wrote under an alias, Allan Cooper, and these have been listed separately. The bibliography concludes with a selection of the regular columns he contributed to angling magazines.
