The typology of rationality is one of major issues of modern philosophy. In an attempt to provide a typology to Oriental materials, a researcher faces additional problems. The diversity of the Orient as such poses a major challenge. When we say “Oriental,” we mean several cultures for which we cannot find a common denominator. The concept of “Orient” involves Arabic, Indian, Chinese, Turkish and other cultures, and the only thing they share is that they are “non-Western.” Moreover, even if we focus just on Islamic culture and look into rationality in this context, we have to deal with a conglomerate of various trends, which does not let us define, with full confidence, a common theoretical basis and treat them as a unity. Nevertheless, we have to go on trying to find common directions in thought development, so as to draw conclusions about types of rationality possible in Islamic culture. A basis for such a typology of rationality in the context of the Islamic world was recently suggested in A.V. Smirnov’s logic of sense theory. However, actual empiric material cannot always fit theoretical models, and the cases that do not fit the common scheme are interesting per se. On the one hand, examination of such cases gives an opportunity to specify certain provisions of the theory and, on the other hand, to define the limits of its applicability.

The article considers the process of transformation of the Ob Ugrian culture on the basis of the analysis of the unique collection of objects of decorative and applied art of the XVII-XXI centuries. This process reflects the formation of a group with a syncretic culture (Ob-Ugric Istiaks). The action of the frontier through contacts with the Siberian Tatars led to the enrichment of culture through external borrowing. The author draws attention to the fact that the Ob Ugrians were ready for cultural transformation within the framework of adoption of other, but necessary norms for survival. The article emphasizes that the Orthodox missionaries were “late” in relation to this part of the Ob Ugrians, since by the 18th century Islam (in the regional version) had already become a part of their spiritual and daily life. Evolutionary processes have led to new phenomena in the Ugric culture. The author analyzes the decorative ornaments of the felon on wooden sculptures of Nikolay Mozhaisky of the 17th century, comparing them with ornaments of the indigenous population of the North, objects related to Christian and Muslim culture. The author’s attention was drawn to the chess ornament. In the process of the analysis several hypotheses of its origin are put forward - from the connection with the Greek Orthodox culture to the reflection of the Northern traditions and the Muslim ornament-girih in its Siberian version: the article focuses on the latter option. Ob-Ugric culture is syncretic in its content, covers a variety of forms of customs, faith, language, life. In the present article the author makes a certain contribution to the study of this problem, highlighting one of the sides of the original Ob-Ugric culture.

For centuries, Islamic traditions have contributed to the formation of unique Muslim culture in Central Asia, interwoven with the rich cultural heritage of the peoples of this region. In turn, this affected the spiritual life of society and left a significant mark on the development of various sciences. Uzbekistan and its cities Bukhara, Samarkand, Nasaf (Karshi), Termez, Khiva, Shash (Tashkent), and others, which became famous in the whole Muslim world as leading scientific and cultural centers, occupied a special place in these historical processes. IX-XII centuries in Central Asia is famous for the development of science and culture, especially the Islamic sciences. Consequently, such ancient cities as Bukhara, Samarkand, Nasaf (Karshi), Termez, Khiva, Shash (Tashkent) are known as centers of science and culture in the Islamic world. In particular, in the medieval sources, Tashkent is called as Shash, where many prominent scholars of Islamic sciences such as hadith and jurisprudence came from. IX century is known as the “Golden Age of Fiqh Science (Islamic law)” thanks to the works of the region’s faqih scholars. The article analyzes the activities of medieval (IX-XII) scholars of Shash in the scientific centers of the region. It also explores scientific cooperation between scholars of madrasahs in various scientific cities of the region, such as Samarkand, Bukhara, Nasaf, Termez, Merv, and Baghdad.

AbstractAfter giving a synthesis about a possible semiotics of the body and its conditions, we will deal with the question of the semiosis of the body in sexual literature in two periods of the arabo-muslim culture. The first period concerns the second century of hegira (the eightieth century), a decisive period of young and already powerful arabo-muslim society. Through Al Jahiz’s works, a very busy and prolific writer, we will study different discourses on the body, notably on homosexuality, heterosexuality and the opposition between black and white bodies. The second example constitutes an occasion for us to grasp the evolution of the semiosis of the body in a new period and with a specific writer who is Al Soyouté, a scholar of the sixteenth century. We will focus particularly on Al Soyouté’s new ideas on the body and his original references to the Greek corpus, but also to the traditions of Coran and Hadith.

Abstract The aim of the present contribution is twofold. On the one hand we shall discuss the background of some Islamic legends about places and wondrous objects – holy relics of the past – that had once been in the possession of the Gothic monarchy by inheritance, but were subsequently lost or looted out of al-Andalus by the Muslim leaders. On the other hand our study is concerned with the relationship between the content of the legends in question and the “loss of Spain” in a more general sense, i.e. not only the loss of these objects by the Christian Goths subsequent to their loss of power in Spain, but also their disappearance from Muslim ownership. Besides, the legends possess a moral core, which is interesting in its own right: the way in which they are viewed in the Muslim sources, the locations and objects they describe, and their relationship to the Gothic monarchy may provide the modern reader with an insight into the striking vision of the past held by the invading Muslim culture.
