AbstractWe investigated the effects of the combinations of patternmaking methods and dress forms on the appearance of a garment. Six upper garments were made using three patternmaking methods used in France, Italy, and Japan, and two dress forms made in Japan and France. The patterns and the appearances of the garments were compared using geometrical measurements. Sensory evaluations of the differences in garment appearance and fit on each dress form were also carried out. In the patterns, the positions of bust and waist darts were different. The waist dart length, bust dart length, and positions of the bust top were different depending on the patternmaking method, even when the same dress form was used. This was a result of differences in the measurements used and the calculation methods employed for other dimensions. This was because the ideal body shape was different for each patternmaking method. Even for garments produced for the same dress form, the appearances of the shoulder, bust, and waist from the front, side, and back views were different depending on the patternmaking method. As a result of the sensory evaluation, it was also found that the bust and waist shapes of the garments were different depending on the combination of patternmaking method and dress form. Therefore, to obtain a garment with better appearance, it is necessary to understand the effects of the combinations of patternmaking methods and body shapes.

The hypothesis tested in this study was that the 'traditional build' is the culturally valued body shape by Ghanaian women. Culturally sensitive figural stimuli were designed to assess the current body image (CBI) and the ideal body image (IBI) of Ghanaian women. The most frequently selected model for the CBI was one that represented a slightly overweight woman; the IBI selected was consistent with a representation of normal body mass index; and the least healthy image was that figure that represented morbidly obesity.

In the manufacturing of osseointegrated dental implants there is no technical standard that defines the body shape and the threads fillets profiles (spirals). Dental implant manufacturers develop implant shapes to increase the implant-bone contact surface area, to improve primary stability, and to promote better distribution of oral forces to bone. The aim of this study was to characterize the dental implant of thread fillets profiles made in Brazil and to analyze the influence on primary stability and force distribution on the implant-bone interface. Seven groups of dental implants with cylindrical (Master Screw®), conical (Flash®, Master Grip®, and Conect Conic®), and hybrid (Easy Grip®, AR-Torq®, and AR Morse®) body shapes were inserted in polyethylene, polyurethane, and in swine bone. The results showed that tapered implants present greater primary stability, the threads profiles must be rounded, the square thread induces highest compressive stresses in the bone, and the microthreads in the cervical reduce the concentration of stresses.

In this paper, a fuzzy rough set-based classification method is applied to identify lower body shapes of a target population for developing customized pants design. First, a group of designers is selected for identifying the key dimensions and lower body shape indices related to women pants design. On the basis of this, we propose a classification algorithm, which uses triangle and trapezoid fuzzy membership functions for transforming the indices of the relevant data into five fuzzy sets, regarded as linguistic descriptors. An importance degree and a similarity degree are defined to solve conflicts of different indices. Next, we randomly select 125 human bodies in the target population and measure the key dimension values by means of a 3D body scanning system and then compute important body shape indices. Then, we set up a number of decision tables and respectively divide the shapes of various lower body positions into five classes by using the rough set method. The classification results have been validated by using a sensory evaluation procedure. The obtained results will effectively help to set up new garment sizes adapted to a target population and realize the concept of mass customization by developing personalized or customized garment styles.

This study investigated the social factors associated with body-shape preferences for females and males as perceived by Arab women living in Qatar, and correlated the current weight status of women studied with these preferences. The subjects were 535 non-pregnant Arab women aged 20–67 years, who attended heath centres in Doha City, the capital of the State of Qatar. Illustrations of male and female body shapes ranging from very thin to very obese using the 9-figure Silhouettes scale were shown to women, and they were asked to select their preferred figure. Body mass index (BMI) was used to determine the weight status of women studied. Age, educational level and employment status were found to be significantly associated with ideal body-shape preference for both males and females, whereas marital status and current weight status had no significant association. In general, the Arab women studied selected a more mid-range of body fatness for males than for females. It is concluded that attention should be given to sociocultural factors, such as body-shape preferences, in any programmes to promote ideal body weight for the public.
