Abstract This paper presents the numerical modelling of strengthening a steel-concrete composite beam. The main assumption is that the strengthening is not the effect of the state of a failure of a structure, but it resulted from the need to increase the load-bearing capacity and stiffness of the structure (for example: due to a change in the use of the object). The expected solution is strengthening without the necessity to completely unload the structures (to reduce the scope of works, the cost of modernization and to shorten the time). The problem is presented on the example of a composite beam which was strengthened through welding a steel plate to the lower flange of the steel beam. The paper describes how energy parameters are used to evaluate the efficiency of structures’ strengthening and proposes an appropriate solution.

For composite beams using novel steel sheeting, the current Eurocode 4 rules sometimes overestimate the load bearing capacity of the shear connector. This is due to the larger rib heights and the smaller rib widths in comparison with the old studies, which have been carried out to calibrate the current design equations. The RFCS Project “DISCCO” investigated this phenomena and the working group under mandate M515, CEN/TC250/SC4/SC4.T3 is enhancing this equation and working on a proposal to be taken over in the new version of Eurocode 4.The proposed new equation covers the failure behaviour of the shear connection more in detail. The test results show, that the failure consists in a combined concrete cone and stud in bending. Due to the geometry of novel steel sheeting, the load bearing capacity of the headed stud shear connector is no more limited by its shear capacity, but by its bending capacity.A 3D non-linear finite element model is developed and validated through the support of the DISCCO push-out tests. A good agreement between numerical and experimental results in terms of force-slip behaviour is achieved. Special attention of this work lies on the numerical evaluation of the number of plastic hinges ny: a stress-based procedure is presented and the results are compared to the equations presented for new Eurocode 4.The numerical simulations show that the upper plastic hinge moves up as the slip increases due to the progressive crushing of the concrete in the rib. From the parametric study, it turns out that ny is linearly proportional to the embedment depth. Compared to pre-punched hole decking, through-deck welding specimen activates less plastic hinges in the studs because of the higher stiffness provided at the base of the stud.

Abstract The article analyses the method of enhancing a steel beam by adding additional steel members like ribs. They are rigidly connected with both flanges in a plane parallel to the web. That plates reduces warping during in-plane bending of steel beam under lateral-torsional bucking. Different thicknesses of steel plates used as ribs and different cross-sections were taken into account. Calculations were conducted using FEM and ABAQUS CAE environment. The outcomes were compared with ones from previous studies which concerned an influence of endplates on load-bearing capacity of an I-beam.

Abstract This paper presents an analysis of timber-concrete composite beams. Said composite beams consist of rectangular timber beams and concrete slabs poured into the steel sheeting. The concrete slab is connected with the timber beam using special shear connectors. The authors of this article are trying to patent these connectors. The article contains results from a numerical analysis. It is demonstrated that the type of steel sheeting used as a lost formwork has an influence on the load-bearing capacity and stiffness of the timber-concrete composite beams.

The focus of this analysis is the review of steel plate strengthened RC beams using Single row and Stagger row bolt arrangements and to compare the bonding behaviour of different bolts arrangement under flexure. Also, to investigate the behaviour, load bearing capacity and the deflection for control and steel plate bonded beams. This research is constrained by FEM analysis utilizing ANSYS to the actions of standard RC Beam and RC beam steel plate associated.

The article presents the results of calculation of the load-bearing capacity of connections of LVL structures under tension using cylindrical dowels in trusses and frames. The description of calculation schemes for determining the load-bearing capacity of connections with different location and sizes of steel plates in the connection is given. The influence of steel plate placement on the distribution of forces in the cross-section of samples is investigated. Based on the results of analytical and experimental studies, the load-bearing capacity of dowels during bending is considered, as well as the mechanism of wooden structures` fracture during chipping. A comparative analysis of the effectiveness of different schemes of dowel connections with three steel plates under tension is carried out.

Cold-formed U-shaped steel and concrete composite beam is a kind of composite beam which the steel and the concrete are integrated by welding connections on the cold-formed U-shaped steel and then pouring concrete on the steel. Now, many experts and scholars have carried out many experimental research and theoretical analysis about it. But, prestressed Cold-formed U-shaped steel and concrete composite beams have not been studied. Based on the structure , the nonlinear analysis mode of prestressed cold-formed U-shaped steel and concrete composite beams is proposed, the calculating program is researched. The calculating results show that the bearing capacity of composite beam increases with the increments of thickness of steel plate and concrete strength, and the thickness of steel plate has a larger effect than the width of the flange plate of concrete, applying prestress can enhance the bearing capacity and flexural rigidity of the composite beam.

This paper proposes a steel-wood composite beam with H-shaped steel beam webs glued to the wood. As a new type of composite beam, it combines the advantages of low energy consumption of wood, high permeability, and less pollution and the advantages of light weight and high strength of steel, high degree of assembly, short construction period, and less construction waste generated. Carrying out research is of great significance to improve the mechanical properties of steel-wood composite beams and promote the development of steel-wood composite structures. In this paper, three hot-rolled H-beam-larch composite beams and one pure steel beam were tested for bending capacity. The composite beams are divided into two different combinations of A and B types. The two sides of the web are connected with larch wood by structural glue to form a composite beam. The type B composite beam is a larch wood glued on both sides of the H-shaped steel web and penetrates the bolts at the same time. Through the three-point monotonic static grading loading of the composite beam, the deflection change, failure phenomenon, and form of the specimen during the experiment were observed. Under the circumstances, the ultimate bearing capacity of the test piece was changed to study the combined effect of larch and hot-rolled H-shaped steel. The results show that the overall performance of the H-shaped steel-larch composite beam is good. Bonding wooden boards on both sides of the steel beam web can improve the bearing capacity, and the form of the member is more reasonable and effective; increasing the cross-sectional size of the H-beam in the steel-wood composite beam can further improve the bearing capacity of the composite beam; adding bolt anchorage on the basis of the structural glue used in the composite beam can further improve the bearing capacity of the composite beam. The superposition principle is used to simplify the calculation of the ultimate bearing capacity of H-shaped steel-larch composite beams. Comparing the calculation results with the test results, the data are in good agreement, which can provide a design reference for the practical application of such composite beams.
