Abstract By improving the air and water properties of soils, superabsorbent polymers can affect the increase and improvement of the quality of the yield of berry plants, including strawberries. Their presence in the soil has an influence on its biological activity as related to microorganisms. The aim of the research was to assess the influence of superabsorbent polymers added to the soil on the content of macroelements and sodium in the leaves and fruit of strawberry of the ‘Elsanta’ cultivar and changes in the number of soil bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi. The superabsorbent polymer (AgroHydroGel) was used in two doses: 1.8 and 3.6 g dm-3 of soil. The content of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium was assessed using the ASA method, while the content of nitrogen and sulphur was assessed by the elemental analysis method (CHNS analyser). The number of microorganisms was assessed with a BacTrac analyser and the coefficient of microorganism development extent (SR) was also determined. AgroHydroGel increased the content of nitrogen and potassium in leaves and fruit but did not affect the content of phosphorus, sulphur and sodium. The addition of the superabsorbent at a dose of 3.6 g dm-3 of soil reduced the magnesium content both in the leaves and fruit of the strawberry. AgroHydroGel decreased the content of calcium in the fruit. The use of AgroHydroGel contributed to the expansion of the K ion ratio to other ions, both in the leaves and fruits. We observed a significant increase in the amount of soil bacteria (1.8 g dm-3 dose) and no significant influence on actinomycetes and fungi (irrespective of dose used).

AbstractIn addition to properly balancing nutritional value in accordance with the needs of a dog, estimating the microbiological quality of dog food is crucial in providing healthy and safe foods. The aim of this study was to examine the quality of dry food for adult dogs, with particular reference to: (1) evaluating the nutritional value and compliance with nutritional guidelines for dogs, (2) comparing the nutritional value of dog foods, with particular emphasis on the division into cereal and cereal-free foods, and (3) evaluating their microbiological safety. All thirty-six evaluated dry dog foods met the minimum European Pet Food Industry FEDIAF requirement for total protein and fat content. The total aerobic microbial count in the analyzed dry dog foods ranged from 2.7 × 102 to above 3.0 × 107 cfu/g. In five (14%) dog foods the presence of staphylococci was detected; however, coagulase positive Staphylococcus (CPS) was not found. Mold presence was reported in one cereal-free dog food and in six cereal foods. In none of the analyzed foods Enterobacteriaceae were found, including coliforms, Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Bacteria of the genus Listeria and Clostridium as well as yeasts were also not detected. In conclusion, the evaluated dry dog foods had varied microbiological quality. The detected number of microorganisms may have some implications for long-term consumption of contaminated food. The lack of European Commission standards regarding the permissible amounts of microorganisms in pet food may result in insufficient quality control of these products.

The interaction of quality management and knowledge management are analyzed quite widely in scientific literature and discussed with reference to various models integrating these two management theories. However, there are not enough precise tools that could provide a possibility of improving the quality of products and services through knowledge management. To this end, the article examines the already existing models for the interaction between quality management and knowledge management. The results of a survey on Lithuanian industry show what organizational knowledge is the most important while implementing quality management principles aimed at improving quality. The correlation analysis method showed the relationship between quality management principles (process approach, continual improvement, management, facts) and the factors defining the product and process quality (the extent of determining process execution time, process resources, costs of process stages, indicators for products and/or services, the duration of the process, the extent of measuring indicators, the extent of collecting information on indicators, the extent of collecting information about the costs of the process). Santrauka Kokybės vadybos ir žinių vadybos sąveika mokslinėje literatūroje analizuojama gana plačiai, aptariami įvairūs sąveikos modeliai integruojant šias dvi vadybos teorijas. Tačiau nepakankamai nagrinėjamos konkrečios priemonės, kuriomis būtų galima pagerinti produktų ir paslaugų kokybę pasitelkiant žinių vadybą. Tuo tikslu straipsnyje analizuojami jau egzistuojantys kokybės vadybos ir žinių vadybos sąveikos modeliai bei pateikiami Lietuvos pramonės įmonių tyrimo rezultatai, parodantys, kokios organizacinės žinios svarbiausios įgyvendinant kokybės vadybos principus, skirtus kokybei gerinti. Taikant koreliacinės analizės metodą nustatyta, kad egzistuoja ryšys tarp kokybės vadybos principų (procesinio požiūrio, nuolatinio gerinimo, valdymo remiantis faktais) įgyvendinimo lygio ir veiksnių, apibūdinančių produktų ir procesų kokybę (procesų įvykdymo laiko nustatymas, procesų išteklių nustatymas, procesų etapų išlaidų nustatymas, produktų ir (ar) paslaugų rodiklių nustatymas, rodiklių matavimas, rodiklių informacijos rinkimas, informacijos apie proceso trukmę nustatymas ir informacijos apie proceso išlaidas rinkimas).

AbstractOrganic meat products are gaining consumer interest worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of organic and conventional meat origin on nutritional determinants of the following pork meat cuts: loin, ham, and shoulder. Nutritional value of meat was based on selected indicators such as proximate composition, the concentration of cholesterol, vitamin E content and minerals and trace elements such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper, iron, and zinc, and the composition of fatty acids. The results of this study demonstrated that higher contents of protein and selected mineral compounds, as well as lower vitamin E concentration and different fatty acids (i.e., C12:0, C17:0, C17:1 n-7, C18:3 n-6, C24:0 and total n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)) distinguish organic pork meat cuts from the conventional counterparts. The organically meat parts, especially the shoulder, were identified as a better source of copper, calcium, iron and zinc, while organic ham and loin had more potassium. On the other hand, organic hams were shown to have lower content of vitamin E in comparison to their conventional equivalents present. Also, in organic shoulders showed a higher n-6/n-3 ratio compared to meat of conventional origin.

Groundwater samples were collected in Erode city, Tamilnadu, from an area having large number of textile dyeing units. Though people residing in this area use river water supplied by local bodies as their major source for drinking, groundwater is also used as complementary source. The samples collected were subjected to systematic analysis using the standard methods and procedures. The values obtained for different physicochemical parameters were compared with the standard values given by ISI/ WHO. Variations in many physicochemical parameters were observed for most of the samples when compared to the standard values. More than half of the samples collected had their EC, TDS, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, sulphate and chloride exceeding their acceptable limits. This attempt has been made to determine the quality of groundwater in the study area confirms the deterioration of groundwater quality in the area and calls for some effective measures to be taken urgently to minimize the adverse impacts that may occur due to the contamination of groundwater.

Introduction: Intestinal parasites are important enteric pathogens. Poverty, low quality of food and water supply and poor sanitation systems are the important factors associated with intestinal parasitic infections. These kinds of infections can be a good index for hygienic and sanitation status of the society. The aim: To study dynamics of infectious and parasitic diseases (for 2008-2013 years) among the children population in Dnipro region and to define influence of water factor on the disease and prevalence given class of illnesses. Materials and methods: Retrospective study of infectious and parasitogenic diseases (І class by ICD-10) among children population from rural districts of Dnipropetrovsk region for 2008-2013 years was carried out. Results: It was spent correlation analysis between some indicators of potable water quality of diseases of the given class in all districts. In the majority of rural districts, was shown increasing І class of diseases from (1.4 to 1.63) times in dynamics. In some districts was reveled an average correlation link between content in water of the dry residue, chlorides, sulphates, calcium, magnesium, except rigidity and iron and prevalence І class of diseases (r=0.50, p<0.001). Prevalence of the given class of diseases was correlated with рН, nitrates, oxidability in the three rural districts of Dnipropetrovsk region (r=0.74-0.89, p<0.001). Conclusions: It has been shown that the composition of drinking water consumed by the rural population remains one of the basic factors in the formation of public health in the conditions of small exposure of the influence individual indicators of salt and chemical composition. The children’s cohorts were the most sensitive to these indicators.

Bacteria of the genus Bacillus make up a significant (8–12%) part of the soil microbiome. Manifestation of their biological activity, in particular, the antagonistic and lytic activity against other microorganisms directly depends on their exometabolites. According to the literature, such properties of soil bacteria of the genus Bacillus thus can be related to their various lytic exoenzymes. Aim. To evaluate the role of lytic exoenzymes of the studied soil bacteria strains of the genus Bacillus in the manifestation of their biological (antagonistic, lysing) activity. Methods. The antagonistic activity of bacteria strains of the genus Bacillus against phytopathogenic micromycetes was determined by the method of double culture in Petri dishes on potato-glucose agar. For qualitative analysis of the presence of extracellular enzymes, strains of bacteria of the genus Bacillus were plated on Petri dishes with solid mineral-salt medium and a suitable substrate inducer. The ratio of the diameter of substrate hydrolysis zone to the diameter of the colony was taken as the relative enzymatic activity of the culture. Bacteriolytic activity of the studied strains was determined by the change in optical density of living cells of phytopathogenic bacteria suspension at 540 nm. Results. Six strains of bacteria of the genus Bacillus were selected by the results of preliminary screening, with at least five types of lytic activity, namely proteolytic, chitinase, amylolytic, cellulase, and xylanase of different levels (low, average, high). Analysis of the antagonistic activity of the selected strains of bacteria of the genus Bacillus to the main groups of phytopathogenic bacteria (six test cultures) singled out the strain Bacillus sp. 41 for a careful study of the nature and spectrum of its antagonism. Analysis of the level of antagonistic activity of the selected Bacillus strains against the phytopathogenic micromycetes showed that the minimum decrease of antagonism (the decrease of growth inhibition zones) during the observation period (at the 3rd and 7th days) was in Bacillus sp. 41 strain. Therefore, only this strain showed a stable and relatively wide range of antagonistic activity against phytopathogens of bacterial and fungal etiology. The nature of this antagonism is probably complex and conditioned by the participation of various biochemical mechanisms, in particular, the synthesis of a complex of lytic exoenzymes. To assess the lysing activity of Bacillus strains, three strains with the highest proteolytic and cellulolytic activity of exoenzymes were taken from the six previously chosen. Only Bacillus sp.1913 strain showed high (70%) lytic activity against gram-negative polyphagous phytopathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae UCM B-1027T. Such activity of the strain did not manifest against the rest of the phytopathogenic test cultures. The high lytic activity of Bacillus sp. 1913 strain may be associated with high activity of exogenous proteases and cellulases of the lytic complex, which is quite consistent with the literature data on the lytic activity of bacteria of the genus Bacillus. Conclusions. The spectrum and activity of lytic exoenzymes of strains of the studied soil bacteria of the genus Bacillus indicate the indirect participation of these enzymes in the manifestation of biological activity (antagonistic and lytic).
