Abstract The quadric-surfaced sludge digester (QSD), also known as the egg-shaped sludge digester, has proven its advantages over traditional cylindrical digesters recently. A reduction in operational cost is the dominant factor. Its shell can be described as a revolution of a parabola with the apex and base being either tapered or spherical. This shape provides a surface free of discontinuities, which is advantageous regarding the efficiency during mixing. Since the shape does not produce areas of inactive fluid motion within the tank, sludge settlement and an eventual grit build-up are avoided. The stresses developed in the shell of the sludge digester, vary along the meridian and equatorial diameters. A non-dimensional parameter, ξ, defines the height-to-diameter aspect ratio which is used to delineate the parametric boundary conditions of the shell’s surface. Three groups of analyses were conducted to determine the orthogonal stresses in the shell of the QSD. The first-principles numerical models ran reasonably quickly, and many simulations were made during the study. The results showed that they were in within the range 5.34% to 7.2% to 2D FEA results. The 3D FEA simulation results were within the range of 8.3% to 9.2% to those from the MATLAB time-history models. This is a good indicator that the first principles numerical models are an excellent time-saving method to predict the behaviour of the QSD under seismic excitation. Upon examining the criteria for the design, analysing the results for the 2D FEA simulations showed that the fill height is not a significant variable with sloshing however the 3D FEA showed that the hydrostatic pressure is a significant variable. With the maximum tensile stress of the 3D-printed Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)-a common thermoplastic polymer typically used for injection molding applications, being 24.4 MPa, the overall maximum stress of 5.45 MPa, the material can be a viable option for the use of QSD construction in small island developing states (SIDS).

High-speed in-line digital holographic cinematography was used to investigate the diffusion of droplets in locally isotropic turbulence. Droplets of diesel fuel (0.3–0.9mm diameter, specific gravity of 0.85) were injected into a 37×37×37mm3 sample volume located in the center of a 160-liter tank. The turbulence was generated by 4 spinning grids, located symmetrically in the corners of the tank, and was characterized prior to the experiments. The sample volume was back illuminated with two perpendicular collimated beams of coherent laser light and time series of in-line holograms were recorded with two high-speed digital cameras at 500 frames/sec. Numerical reconstruction generated a time series of high-resolution images of the droplets throughout the sample volume. We developed an algorithm for automatically detecting the droplet trajectories from each view, for matching the two views to obtain the three-dimensional tracks, and for calculating the time history of velocity. We also measured the mean fluid motion using 2-D PIV. The data enabled us to calculate the Lagrangian velocity autocorrelation function.

The eye is a complex system of boundaries and fluids with different viscosities within the boundaries. At present, there are no experimental possibilities to thoroughly observe the dynamic 4D processes after one or another method of eye treatment is applied. The complexity of cumulative, i.e., focusing, and dissipative, i.e., scattering, convective and diffusion 4D fluxes of fluids in the eye requires 4D analytical and numerical models of fluid transfer in the human eyeball to be developed. The purpose of the study was to develop and then verify a numerical model of 4D cumulative-dissipative processes of fluid transfer in the eyeball. The study was the first to numerically evaluate the values of the characteristic time of the drug substance in the vitreous cavity until it is completely washed out, depending on the injection site; to visualize the paths of the vortex motion of the drug in the vitreous cavity; to determine the main parameters of the 4D fluid flows of the medicinal substance in the vitreous cavity, depending on the presence or absence of vitreous detachment from the wall of the posterior chamber of the eye. The results obtained are verified by the experimental data available to doctors. In the eye, as a partially open cumulative-dissipative system, Euler regions with high rates of cumulative flows and regions with low speeds or stagnant Lagrange flow zones are defined

AbstractGravity waves (GWs) play an important role in many atmospheric processes. However, the observation-based understanding of GWs is limited, and representing them in numerical models is difficult. Recent studies show that small islands can be intense sources of GWs, with climatologically significant effects on the atmospheric circulation. South Georgia, in the South Atlantic, is a notable source of such “small island” waves. GWs are usually too small scale to be resolved by current models, so their effects are represented approximately using resolved model fields (parameterization). However, the small-island waves are not well represented by such parameterizations, and the explicit representation of GWs in very-high-resolution models is still in its infancy. Steep islands such as South Georgia are also known to generate low-level wakes, affecting the flow hundreds of kilometers downwind. These wakes are also poorly represented in models.We present results from the South Georgia Wave Experiment (SG-WEX) for 5 July 2015. Analysis of GWs from satellite observations is augmented by radiosonde observations made from South Georgia. Simulations were also made using high-resolution configurations of the Met Office Unified Model (UM). Comparison with observations indicates that the UM performs well for this case, with realistic representation of GW patterns and low-level wakes. Examination of a longer simulation period suggests that the wakes generally are well represented by the model. The realism of these simulations suggests they can be used to develop parameterizations for use at coarser model resolutions.

Experimental and Numerical Crack Initiation Analysis of the Compressor Blades Working in Resonance ConditionsThis paper presents the results of a complex experimental and numerical crack initiation analysis of the helicopter turbo-engine compressor blades subjected to vibrations. A nonlinear finite element method was utilized to determine the stress state of the blade during the first mode of transverse vibration. In this analysis, the numerical models without defects as well as those with V-notches were defined. The quality of the numerical solution was checked by the convergence analysis. The obtained results were next used as an input data into crack initiation (ε-N) analyses performed for the load time history equivalent to one cycle of the transverse vibration. In the fatigue analysis, the different methods such as: Neuber elastic-plastic strain correction, linear damage summation and Palmgreen-Miner rule were utilized. As a result of ε-N analysis, the number of load cycles to the first fatigue crack appearing in the compressor blades was obtained. Moreover, the influence of the blade vibration amplitude on the number of cycles to the crack initiation was analyzed. Values of the fatigue properties of the blade material were calculated using the Baumel-Seeger and Muralidharan methods. The influence of both the notch radius and values of the UTS of the blade material on the fatigue behavior of the structure was also considered. In the last part of the work, the finite element results were compared with the results of experimental vibration HCF tests performed for the compressor blades.

The present work aimed to outline the need to investigate different fields of research to interpret the structural behaviour of a monument as complex as the Colosseum. It is shown how defining the numerical models first. then refining them, followed by interpretation of results. is strictly linked with the inforination gathered from historical records and observation of the ~nonumenta s it is today. The study is confined to the area of the Valadier abutment. analysing its state and its seismic behaviour before and after the XIX century restoration using different ilumerical tools, from the elastic modal analysis to the non linear step by step time history direct integration. The procedure comparati\ely evaluates the reliability in the interpretation of the results and identifies future lines or research.

A new model that can simulate the behavior of construction joint subjected to seismic forces was proposed. Nonlinear time-history analysis was carried out for reinforced concrete regular frame structures designed in different seismic intensity regions as well as with different height-to-width ratios. Two kinds of numerical models are adopted to simulate the seismic behavior of each frame, one with construction joint using the new proposed model and the other without construction joint using the conventional model. Results show that the influence of construction joint on the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete frame is strongly related to structural nonlinearity. It may increase the top displacement and the inter-story drift, change the inter-story drift distributions, and exacerbated the local reaction of key members. The influence of construction joint cannot be ignored for structures with low emergency capacity against major earthquake. Seismic design suggestions are proposed from the aspect of calculation analysis method.

Sloshing, a violent fluid motion in tanks is of current interest for many branches of the industry, among them gas shipping. Although different methods are commonly combined for analyzing sloshing in liquid natural gas (LNG) carriers, time histories of the pressure in the tanks are most reliably obtained by experiments. Very localized pressures may be important for the structural response of the tank containment system. Moreover, the typical pressure time history duration is similar to the structural natural frequency. Therefore, pressure measurements need to be performed with due account for temporal and spatial distribution. This requires a high sampling resolution both in time and space. Fine spatial resolution becomes especially important when local pressure effects are of interest, such as pressure profile passing a membrane corrugation of Mark III containment or Invar edge of No. 96 containment. In this paper experimental approach applied by MARINTEK for analyzing sloshing phenomenon is presented. The focus is put on investigating effects of Invar edges. A transverse 2D model of a typical LNG carrier is used. Local pressure effects are investigated based on low filling level tests with different wall surfaces: smooth and with horizontal protrusions representing the surface similar to the No. 96 containment system.

Reinforced concrete coupled walls are a common lateral load resisting system used in multi-storey buildings. The effect of the coupling beams can improve seismic performance, but at the same time adds complexity to the design procedure. A case study coupled wall building is designed using Force-Based Design (FBD) and Direct Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) and in the case of the latter a step by step design example is provided. Distributed plasticity fibre-section beam element numerical models of the coupled walls are developed in which coupling beams are represented by diagonal truss elements and experimental results are used to confirm that this approach can provide a good representation of hysteretic behaviour. The accuracy of the two different design methods is then assessed by comparing the design predictions to the results of non-linear time-history analyses. It is shown that the DDBD approach gives an accurate prediction of inter-storey drift response. The FBD approach, in accordance with NZS1170.5 and NZS3101, is shown to include an impractical procedure for the assignment of coupling beam strengths and code equations for the calculation of coupling beam characteristics appear to include errors. Finally, the work highlights differences between the P-delta considerations that are made in FBD and DDBD, and shows that the code results are very sensitive to the way in which P-delta effects are accounted for.
