Green chemistry outreach

Abstract This paper discusses several approaches used to infuse green chemistry and its core values into the outreach curriculum spanning 2013–2017 at Eastern Michigan University. Pertinent pedagogy, best practices, suggestions on how to organize an outreach activity, and common pitfalls to be avoided will be discussed. A unique feature of the outreach camps described is that diversity is addressed.

Attempts have been made for long to classify tourists by activities, interests and opinions (AIOs), by values and even, typology of the tourist based on personality characteristics. Pearce (1993) observes, tourist motivation is in fact “discretionary, episodic, future oriented, dynamic, socially influenced, and evolving” with “attitudes, behavioural intentions, values, preferences, beliefs, needs, and goals thereby presenting spaghetti of overlapping and interlocking concepts”. This research paper is a case study of how ‘Club Mahindra Holidays' flagship brand of Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd., (MHRIL) started in 1996, has been successful in motivating tourism in general and in India in particular. It also attempts to understand how tourism is based on motivating theories and draw lessons for evolving successful tourism strategies based on the core values such as Reliability, Trust and Customer Satisfaction. The case study will enable tourism organizations to adopt best practices, strategize well for success and contribute to economic development in this era of globalization.

: The synthesis of heterocyclic compounds via carbon-nitrogen (C-N) bond formation reaction is considered as an emerged and efficient protocol in the field of synthetic chemistry. The C–N bond-forming reactions can proceed through condensation, coupling, ring-opening, cyclization or ring closure process etc. The reactivity pattern of these reactions mainly depends upon the reaction conditions as well as the type of catalysts and reacting substances that are associated with the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds containing the C-N system including pyrazole, imidazole, pyridine, pyrimidine, thiazole, tetrazole, isoxazole, benzothiazine and benzimidazole etc. Further, the technique of microwave-induced synthesis becomes an alternative strategy for the sustainable production of structurally diverse organic compounds. This method provides a cleaner reaction, faster reaction rate, atom economy and energy-efficient. So, the utilization of microwave radiation in organic synthesis becomes resource-friendly and eco-friendly processes. It follows the green chemistry approach by using safer solvents, renewable starting materials and green catalysts. The unique feature of this method is to generate various types of bioactive or medicinal agents.

The concern with outcomes and best practices is part of the daily life of managers and companies, including the concern with strategic planning. Within this context, this research aims to answer the following question: What is the organizational structure of the mission statements of the companies classified as "Biggest and Best" in Brazil? For this we analyze the organizational mission of the 500 best companies classified by ranking "Best and Biggest of 2012" by Abril publisher. It was observed that the main aspects are: "Identification of self-concept and core values, philosophy, technology and core competencies and organizational behavior"; "products and services" and "sustainable issues" (social and environmental). "Although it is not possible to say that the presence or absence of the aspects in their missions are responsible for the performance of companies, we can say that these aspects are present in the organizational mission of the 500 Best and Biggest of 2012.

Plant stinging emergences exhibit functional similarities in that they all elicit a pain response upon contact. A stinging emergence consists of an elongated stinging cell and a multicellular pedestal (Fig. 1). A recent ultrastructural investigation of these structures has revealed the ontogeny and morphology of the stinging cells differs in representative genera in the four plant families which possess such structures. A unique feature of the stinging cell of Urtica dioica is the presence of a siliceous cell wall in the apical portion of the cell. This rigid region of the cell wall is responsible for producing the needle-like apparatus which penetrates the skin. The stinging cell differentiates the apical bulbous tip early in development and the cell continues growth by intercalary addition of non-silicified wall material until maturity.The uppermost region of the stinging cell wall is entirely composed of silica (Fig. 2, 3) and upon etching with a 3% solution of HF (5 seconds), the silica is partially removed revealing the wall consisting of individualized silica bodies (Fig. 4, 5).

Purpose The purpose of this article is to explore and describe the approaches and specific assessment tools that speech-language pathologists are currently using to assess social communication disorders (SCDs) in children, in relation to current best practices. Method Ninety-four speech-language pathologists completed an online survey asking them to identify which of the following approaches they use to assess children with SCD: parent/teacher report, naturalistic observation, formal assessment, language sample analysis, interviews, semistructured tasks, and peer/self-report. Participants were also asked to identify specific assessment tools they use within each approach. Results Participants most commonly assess SCDs by combining interviews, naturalistic observation, language sampling, parent/teacher report, and formal assessment. Semistructured tasks and peer/self-report tools were less frequently utilized. Several established parent/teacher report and formal assessment tools were commonly identified for assessing SCDs. Most participants use an informal approach for interviews, language sampling, and naturalistic observations in their SCD assessment process. Conclusions Generally, participants follow best practices for assessing SCDs by combining several different approaches. Some considerations for future assessment are identified, including the use of established protocols in the place of informal approaches in order to make the assessment of SCDs more systematic. Future directions for research are discussed.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, over 20% of Americans speak a language other than English in the home, with Spanish, Chinese, and French being the languages most commonly spoken, aside from English. However, few augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems offer multilingual support for individuals with limited functional speech. There has been much discussion in the AAC community about best practices in AAC system design and intervention strategies, but limited resources exist to help us provide robust, flexible systems for users who speak languages other than English. We must provide services that take into consideration the unique needs of culturally and linguistically diverse users of AAC and help them reach their full communication potential. This article outlines basic guidelines for best practices in AAC design and selection, and presents practical applications of these best practices to multilingual/multicultural clients.

People with ASD often need to access AAC in situations where a tabletop digital device is not practical. Recent advancements have made more powerful, portable, and affordable communication technologies available to these individuals. Proloquo2Go is a new portable augmentative and alternative communication system that runs on an iPhone or iPod touch and can be used to meet the diverse needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who are ambulatory and have difficulty using speech to meet their full daily communication needs. This article examines Proloquo2Go in light of the best practices in AAC for individuals with ASD such as symbols, visual supports, voice output, and inclusion.
