Insight role of TiO2 to improve the photocatalytic performance of WO3 nanostructures for the efficient degradation of ciprofloxacin

Abstract The current research work is to investigate the photocatalytic efficiency and degradation of ciprofloxacin using WO3/TiO2 nanoparticles under visible light irradiation. The nanoparticles of tungsten trioxide (WO3) and its composite with titanium dioxide (TiO2) i.e. WO3/TiO2 was prepared by hydrothermal method. Four basic characterizations were performed to study the prepared sample materials. To study the morphology of the prepared samples, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used. The results of SEM clearly showed that tungsten trioxide (WO3) has Rectangular shaped structure. The average size of the pure Tungsten trioxide nanoparticles was about 40–540 nm. The composite of WO3/TiO2 has spherical structure. The reason behind that was the addition of TiO2 in WO3 changes the morphology of pure WO3, and transformed the rectangular structure to a spherical structure. The presence of TiO2 changes the position and orientation of the nanorods in all possible directions. For the detailed analysis of the functional groups present in these samples, band gap, and optical properties of these samples, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet visible (UV–VIS) spectroscopy and Photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy was used. UV–Vis spectroscopy results showed that the bandgaps of prepared catalysts vary within the range of 2.76 – 2.5 eV. This decrease in bandgap is directly related with the concentration ratio of TiO2 in WO3. The maximum excitation wavelength observed at 440 nm. The maximum degradation efficiency was at 2% of WO3/TiO2 composite catalyst due to unique morphological structure and increase rate of photo absorption.

The gold nanostars (AuNS) were prepared through seedless reductive method by using the natural biodegradable polymer chitosan acting both as the stabilizing and shape-directing agent, ascorbic acid as a reducting agent. This reaction synthesis was carried out at room temperature and facile conditions. In an effort to control the size and shape of AuNS, many experimental parameters were investigated for the thorough understanding the role of chitosan in the formation of gold nanostar. In this novel method, the pH condition and appropriate stabilizer concentration were crucial factors to prepare the well-defined AuNS. The obtained AuNS were characterized by many physical-chemistry analysis method such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and X-Ray diffraction (XRD). The AuNS have an average size of about 55 nm and narrow size distribution when characterized by TEM images. UV-Vis spectroscopy of the gold nanoparticles colloidal solution showed the characteristic peaks at 587-700 nm, corresponding to the surface plasmon resonance of star-shaped nanostructure. The specific interactions between the functional groups of chitosan chain and the as-prepared gold nanostars are analyzed by the FT-IR spectroscopy technique. These results provided insight into the role of biopolymer as both a protecting agent and structure-directing agent. This novel method can overcome previous limitations in controlled synthesis of star-shaped gold nanoparticles such as surfactant use and complex implementation. Besides, the gold nanostars stabilized by chitosan could be a potential material in many applications in the field of biomedical medicine.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be among the leading causes for high mortality among developing countries. Though a seemingly effective treatment regimen against TB is in place, there has been no significant improvement in the therapeutic rates. This is primarily owing to the high drug doses, their associated sideeffects, and prolonged treatment regimen. Discontinuation of therapy due to the severe side effects of the drugs results in the progression of the infection to the more severe drug-resistant TB. Objectives: Reformulation of the current existing anti TB drugs into more efficient dosage forms could be an ideal way out. Nanoformulations have been known to mitigate the side effects of toxic, high-dose drugs. Hence, the current research work involves the formulation of Isoniazid (INH; a first-line anti TB molecule) loaded chitosan nanoparticles for pulmonary administration. Methods: INH loaded chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by ionic gelation method using an anionic crosslinker. Drugexcipient compatibility was evaluated using DSC and FT-IR. The formulation was optimized on the principles of Qualityby-Design using a full factorial design. Results: The obtained nanoparticles were spherical in shape having an average size of 620±10.97 nm and zeta potential +16.87±0.79 mV. Solid state characterization revealed partial encapsulation and amorphization of INH into the nanoparticulate system. In vitro release study confirmed an extended release of INH from the system. In vitro cell line based safety and efficacy studies revealed satisfactory results. Conclusion: The developed nanosystem is thus an efficient approach for antitubercular therapy.

In this paper, we present studies on the influence of the disulfide bridge on the copper (II) ions’ binding abilities by the cyclic His4-peptide. The studied ligand HKHPHRHC-S-S-C consists of nine amino acids. The cyclic structure was obtained through a disulfide bridge between two cysteinyl groups. Moreover, this peptide is characterized by the presence of four His residues in the sequence, which makes it an interesting ligand for transition metal ions. The potentiometric and spectroscopic (UV-Vis spectroscopy and circular dichroism spectroscopy (CD)) studies were carried out in various molar ligand to metal ratios: 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2, in the pH range of 2.5–11 at 25 °C. The results showed that the cyclic His4-peptide promotes dinuclear complexes in each of these systems and forms the final dinuclear species with the {NIm, 3N-amide}{NIm, 3N-amide} coordination mode. The obtained data shows that cyclization by the formation of the disulfide bond has an impact on the peptide chain flexibility and appearance of additional potential donors for metal ions and influences the copper (II) ions’ coordination.

The role of stockmanship in relation to the wellbeing of farm animals has been emphasised in the UK Codes of Recommendations for the Welfare of Farm Livestock (MAFF, 1983). Moreover, previous research work has demonstrated important effects of good and bad stockmanship not only on welfare but also on growth, lactational and reproductive performance of pigs and other farm livestock (Hemsworth et al, 1987). There is a need, therefore, to establish the factors which motivate and demotivate stockpeople since the degree of job satisfaction is likely to have a considerable influence on the attitude and performance of stockpeople and on their empathy with the animals in their care. With this objective in mind, a questionnaire was designed to investigate the aspects which could have an influence on the job satisfaction of the stockpeople involved in pig production.

Some of the theories of nation building have been dedicated to the study of link between nation and nationalism; others are attributed to explore nation building, state building, social integration, national integration and even conflict transformation during various historical periods. However, nation building is a normative concept used by academicians and nation builders alike to study the role of armed forces in nation building in recent times. Although research has conducted on ethnicity and nation building in Nepal, a little is known about application of theoretical perspective to explore the role of Nepali Army in nation building. Apparently, this article argues that the level of theoretical awareness of academicians and nation builders needs improvement and multiple theories of nation building are relevant to explore the role of Nepali Army in nation building during various enclaves of Nepali nation. Important issues like what are the relevant theories in Nepali context to analyse nation building? Their implication during the historical times to study the link of Nepali Army with nation building needs to be studied. Hence, this paper comparatively examines a nation building theories and their relevant implications during various enclaves of Nepali nation particularly applauding the role on Nepali Army. Conceptual framework based on Saunder's Research Onion Peeled (2007) method was used with qualitative design in a way of inductive approach to conduct the research work to investigate the research questions. Comparative document study, library research, quick survey with policy makers, government employees, professors, university students APF Officers and Army Officers based on purposive sampling method have been used. Study found that Nepali nation passes through its own way of building the nation in various enclaves, none of the theories are complete to study the employment of Nepali Army to produce visible and encouraging results. The level of theoretical awareness of academicians and nation builders needs further improvement. For this, multiple theories particularly related to social transformation, infrastructural development in support of centre to periphery relation; social integration and nationalism are appropriate.

The prime objective of this research work is to develop an efficient small scale-dependent computational framework incorporating microstructural tensors of dilatation gradient, rotation gradient, and deviatoric stretch gradient to analyze nonlinear lateral stability of cylindrical microshells. The numerical strategy is established based upon a mixed formation of the third-order shear deformable shell model and modified strain gradient continuum mechanics. The graphene nanoplatelet reinforcements are assumed to be randomly dispersed in a checkerboard scheme within the resin matrix. Accordingly, to extract the effective material properties, the Monte Carlo simulation together with a probabilistic technique are employed. The numerical solution for the microstructural-dependent nonlinear problem is carried out via the moving Kriging meshfree method having the capability to accommodate accurately the essential boundary conditions using proper moving Kriging shape function. It is represented that the role of the stiffening characters related to the effect of microstructural dilatation gradient, rotation gradient, and deviatoric stretch reduces continuously by going to deeper territory of the load-deflection stability path. Moreover, it is indicated that among various microstructural gradient tensors, the stiffening character of the rotation gradient is higher than deviatoric stretch gradient, and the stiffening character of the latter is more considerable than the dilatation gradient tensor.

Recent advancements in nanotechnology, for the biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles through enormous techniques, showed multidimensional developments. One among many facets of nanotechnology is to procure and adopt new advancements for green technology over chemical reduction synthesis. This adaptation for acquiring green nanotechnology leads us to a new dimension of nanobiotechnology. In order to imply one such efforts, in this study the emphasis is being laid on the synthesis of MgO nanoparticles using green technology and eliminating chemical reduction methods. Different characterization techniques such as UV–Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering were used to carry out the experiments. The average size of MgO nanoparticles were obtained in the range of 85–95 nm, when synthesized by various sources. The extracts of plants were capable of producing MgO nanoparticles efficiently and exhibited good results during cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study. The electrode modified with MgO nanoparticles (plant extract) showed good stability (90 days) and high conductivity. This study reports cost-effective and environment-friendly method for synthesis of MgO nanoparticles using plant extracts. The process is rapid, simple, and convenient and can be used as an alternative to chemical method.
