Collective Coping Strategies for HIV-Related Challenges Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Manila, Philippines

Contextual factors, such as cultures of collectivism versus individualism, shape HIV coping strategies; despite this, little research regarding collective coping strategies applied to HIV exists. This may be important for the growing HIV epidemic in the Philippines, which has a collectivistic culture and where men who have sex with men (MSM) account for a majority of the cases. Fifteen semistructured, in-depth interviews with HIV-positive MSM and 6 interviews with community-based organization workers were conducted between June and August 2017. Data were analyzed using thematic framework analysis. Three strategies were identified: peer support, spirituality, and support from existing relationships. Each form of collective coping had unique mechanisms and benefits for dealing with HIV. Overall, helping MSM with HIV find a collective identity after an HIV diagnosis enables management of HIV-related challenges. Policies and research interventions that improve access to collective identities for MSM with HIV may improve management of HIV-related challenges.

Ecovillages are collective projects that attempt to integrate sustainability principles into daily community life, while also striving to be demonstration projects for mainstream society. As spaces of experimentation, they can provide valuable insights into sustainability transformations. Through shared values and interpersonal connections, ecovillages possess collective identities, which provide a platform for enacting their ideals. However, many ecovillage residents question how to best enhance their role as models, resource centers, and pieces of a greater movement toward sustainability transformations, while simultaneously preserving their unique community and identity. In relation to the above, this paper addresses the questions: What can collective identity in ecovillage communities teach us about the objective and subjective dimensions of sustainability transformations? Furthermore, how can the perspective of collective identity highlight challenges for ecovillages for initiating sustainability transformations? Sustainability transformations encompass objective (behaviors) and subjective (values) dimensions; however, the interactions between these spheres deserve more scholarly attention. Using ethnographic data and in-depth interviews from three ecovillages in the United States, this paper reveals the value in collective identity for underscoring belonging and interpersonal relationships in sustainability transformations. Furthermore, the collective identity perspective exposes paradoxes and frictions between ecovillages and the societal structures and systems they are embedded within.

Background Community-based HIV testing services combined with the use of point-of-care tests (POCT) have the potential to improve early diagnosis through increasing availability, accessibility and uptake of HIV testing. Aim To describe community-based HIV testing activity in Catalonia, Spain, from 1995 to 2018, and to evaluate the impact of HIV POCT on the HIV continuum of care. Methods A community-based network of voluntary counselling and testing services in Catalonia, Spain has been collecting systematic data on activity, process and results since 1995. A descriptive analysis was performed on pooled data, describing the data in terms of people tested and reactive screening test results. Results Between 1995 and 2018, 125,876 HIV tests were performed (2.1% reactive). Since the introduction of HIV POCT in 2007, a large increase in the number of tests performed was observed, reaching 14,537 tests alone in 2018 (1.3% reactive). Men who have sex with men (MSM), as a proportion of all people tested, has increased greatly over time reaching 74.7% in 2018. The highest percentage of reactive tests was found in people who inject drugs followed by MSM. The contribution of community-based HIV testing to the overall total notified cases in the Catalonia HIV registry has gradually increased, reaching 37.9% in 2018, and 70% of all MSM cases. In 2018, the percentage of individuals with a reactive screening test who were linked to care was 89.0%. Conclusion Our study reinforces the important role that community-based HIV POCT has on the diagnosis of HIV in key populations.

This article provides a new perspective on comics publishing in the Philippines, particularly when compared to the cheap, mass-market image it used to carry. It also opens discussions on electronic publishing, piracy, exploring untapped markets both locally and internationally, among others. In-depth interviews were conducted in order to investigate the firsthand experiences of contemporary comic book publishers in the Philippines. We limited our study to independent publishers, noting that their experiences are also testament to the end of the monopoly of big, commercial presses in comics publishing. Findings reveal that comics publishers in the Philippines (1) belong to a close-knit community of creatives and academics; (2) benefit from comic conventions and cult followings; (3) manage to operate with insufficient support from local bookstores; and (4) use various coping strategies in the form of novel roles, products, and distribution systems.

Abstract BackgroundYoung men who have sex with men are disproportionately impacted by the HIV epidemic in the United States. Few rigorously tested HIV prevention interventions have been developed for young men who have sex with men; previous interventions have primarily focused on in-person programming, with high variability in fidelity. With nearly all young men who have sex with men going online daily, eHealth approaches to prevention may successfully bridge research and practice. Keep It Up! is an eHealth HIV Prevention program for young men who have sex with men. Previous research has demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing sexually transmitted infections and condomless anal sex and efficiency in delivering HIV prevention education. Aim 1 is to compare two strategies for implementing KIU—implementation in community-based organizations and a centralized direct-to-consumer recruitment arm. Aim 2 is to examine adoption characteristics which explain variability in implementation success. Our exploratory aim will develop recommendations and materials for sustainment of KIU after completion of the trial.MethodsThis is a Type III Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation cluster randomized trial. Using estimates of young men who have sex with men per county in the United States, we identified 113 counties for our sample frame. Using an iterative process, we selected 66 counties to randomize 2:1 to our two strategies in Aim 1. The RE-AIM model for implementation science will be used to drive our outcome measurements in reach, effectiveness, implementation variability, and cost. Outcome measures will be collected from community-based organization staff participants, young men who have sex with men participants, and the technology provider. Our second aim will use mixed-methods research mapped onto the domains of the consolidated framework for implementation research. DiscussionThe trial has launched and is ongoing. This study is among the first to use a cluster randomized trial design in HIV implementation science. In comparing the community-based organization and direct to consumer models for recruitment and ongoing participant engagement, we are examining two strategies which have shown effectiveness in delivering health and technology interventions in the past, but with little base knowledge on their comparative advantages and disadvantages in implementation. Objective: The study aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of an unassisted and community-based HIV self-testing (HIVST) distribution model and to evaluate its acceptability among men-having-sex-with-men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). Methods: Our observational study focused on implementing the HIVST service in Metro Manila, Philippines. Convenience sampling was done with the following inclusion criteria: MSM or TGW, at least 18 years old, and had no previous HIV diagnosis. Individuals taking HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), or female sex at birth were excluded. The implementation of the study was online using a virtual assistant and delivery system via courier due to COVID-19-related lockdowns. Feasibility was measured by the number of HIVST kits successfully delivered and utilized and the HIV point prevalence rate. Moreover, acceptability was evaluated by a 10-item system usability scale (SUS). HIV prevalence was estimated with linkage to care prioritized for reactive participants. Results: Out of 1,690 kits distributed, only 953 (56.4%) participants reported their results. Overall HIV point prevalence was 9.8%, with 56 (60.2%) reactive participants linked to further testing. Furthermore, 27.4% of respondents self-reported, and 13.4% of the reactive participants were first-time testers. The HIVST service had an overall mean +/- standard deviation SUS score of 81.0 +/- 13.0, rendering the HIVST kits very acceptable. Conclusions: HIVST is acceptable and feasible to MSM and TGW. Online platforms are an innovative and effective way to deliver HIVST service during a pandemic. However, messaging to entice people to use the kit must be differentiated based on their age, gender identity and expression, and previous HIVST experience to offer the service efficiently to the target populations.

This study examines how a community-based organization, the Balm in Gilead, has created social marketing campaigns targeted at the Black Church to promote AIDS awareness and education. This research examines how these social marketing campaigns were carefully framed within a religious and moral narrative so that it resonated with the values of the Black Church. Data consist of participant observation, in-depth interviews, and content analysis. Findings reveal that the Balm in Gilead marketed AIDS awareness to the Black Church's Christian obligation and duty to care for the sick and suffering. The Balm in Gilead created social marketing campaigns targeted at four key themes found within the tenets of the Black Church: responsibility to care for others, love, acceptance, and forgiveness. Discussions on possible policy implications along with the limitations of this study are also provided.

BACKGROUND Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) are at disproportionately higher risk of acquiring HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). While HIV/STI testing rates among GBMSM are increasing worldwide, they remain suboptimal in a variety of settings. While many studies have attempted to evaluate the efficacy of a variety of community-based campaigns, including peer and reminder-based interventions on HIV/STI testing, however few have attempted to do so for a web drama series. OBJECTIVE This study evaluates the effectiveness of a popular web drama video series developed by a community-based organization in Singapore for GBMSM on HIV and other STI testing behaviors. METHODS The study is a pragmatic, randomized controlled trial to evaluate a popular web drama video series developed by a community-based organization in Singapore for GBMSM. A total of 300 HIV-negative, GBMSM men in Singapore aged 18 to 29 years old were recruited and block-randomized into the intervention (n=150) and control arms (n=150). Primary outcomes included changes in self-reported intention to test for, actual testing for, and regularity of testing for HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea, while secondary outcomes include changes in a variety of other knowledge-based and psychosocial measures at the end of the study period. RESULTS Overall, 125 out of 150 participants (83.3%) in the intervention arm completed the proof of completion survey, compared to 133 out of 150 participants (88.7%) in the control arm. We found statistically significant differences in self-reporting as a regular (at least yearly) tester for HIV (15.9% difference, 95%CI [3.2%, 28.6%]), as well as chlamydia or gonorrhoea (15.5% difference, 95%CI [4.2%, 26.9%]), indicating that the intervention had positively impacted these outcomes compared to the control condition. We also found statistically significant differences in participants’ intentions to test for HIV (16.6% difference, 95%CI [4.3%, 28.9%]), syphilis (14.8% difference, 95%CI [3.2%, 26.4%]), as well as chlamydia or gonorrhoea (15.4% difference, 95%CI [4.2%, 26.6%]), in the next three months, indicating that the intervention was effective in positively impacting intention for HIV and other STI testing among participants. CONCLUSIONS There are clear benefits for promoting intentions to test regularly and prospectively on a broad scale through this intervention. This intervention also has potential to reach GBMSM who may not have access to conventional HIV and other STI prevention messaging, which have typically been implemented at sex-on-premises venues, bars, clubs, and in sexual health settings frequented by GBMSM. When coupled with community or population-wide structural interventions, the overall impact on testing will likely be significant.
