Forests are excellent “outdoor classrooms” for active learning in ecology and evolution; however, in many areas trees have no leaves or visible animal activity for much of the year. Fallen leaves may preserve evidence of interactions such as herbivory and infectious diseases, although these can be difficult to differentiate from mechanical damage and decomposition in older fallen leaves. I developed an exercise in which students collect fallen leaves and observe several different types of damage to the leaves. I provide images and descriptions of different types of damage and practices to differentiate them. In addition, I provide a list of questions that can be answered by collecting fallen leaves and observations of damage. My students gained valuable quantitative literacy skills by entering data into an online worksheet and performing various calculations and data analysis techniques. This exercise provides many benefits and can be an engaging addition to a high school's or college's outdoor curriculum outside of the growing season.

<em>The rate of conversion of paddy fields and irrigation water crisis suggest to consider the development of upland rice.� Empowerment of organic-based dryland done to increase rice, as well as environmental sustainability efforts.� The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of organic fertilizer residue to upland rice in the second growing season.� Experiments using a split-split plot design.� The main plot consisted of a dosage of 50% and 100% organic fertilizer in the first growing season.� Sub plot consisted of chicken manure (20 tons ha<sup>-1</sup>), <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Centrosema</span>� <span style="text-decoration: underline;">pubescens</span> (4.3 tons ha<sup>-1</sup>) + chicken manure (10 tons ha<sup>-1</sup>), and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Thitonia</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">diversifolia</span> (4.3 tons ha<sup>-1</sup>) + chicken manure (10 tons ha<sup>-1</sup>).� Sub-sub plot consist of Danau Gaung and Batu Tegi varieties.� The different types of fertilizer had no effect on plant productivity.� The addition of <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Thitonia</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">diversifolia</span> gave a good effect on some growth variable and its resistance due pathogen attack.� Batu Tegi varieties are varieties that give the best response from an organic fertilizer.� Interaction between dosage, type of fertilizer, and varieties do not provide areal impact.</em>

Data-driven fMRI analysis techniques include independent component analysis (ICA) and different types of clustering in the temporal domain. Since each of these methods has its particular strengths, it is natural to look for an approach that unifies Kohonen's self-organizing map and ICA. This is given by the topographic independent component analysis. While achieved by a slight modification of the ICA model, it can be at the same time used to define a topographic order (clusters) between the components, and thus has the usual computational advantages associated with topographic maps. In this contribution, we can show that when applied to fMRI analysis it outperforms FastICA.

In the 30 years of the AIDS pandemic in Brazil, it is recognized the HIV virus internalization of the phenomenon as a challenge to care and current health policies. In this sense, it aimed to verify sex practices and social representations that rural towns residents have about the disease. Attended by 789 people, men and women, between 18 and 90 years old, residents in 41 towns with fewer than 11,000 inhabitants in the state of Paraiba / Brazil. Data were collected by a questionnaire and the free association of words test. The results showed low concern about disease, perception of invulnerability to HIV infection and not using condoms during sexual intercourse, and confidence in the major reason related partner. Also showed endure derogatory and stereotypical representations, revealing that still persist in rural areas, beliefs and representations concerning the beginning of the epidemic. From these findings, it is possible to point out deficiencies in the care provided by the health services in these localities, which may result in increased vulnerability of this population to diseases, so there is the need to intensify information campaigns and intervention. The results reveal the existence of three different types of modes of learning health literacy skills in informal context: : i) learning that takes place in action, in achieving daily tasks; ii) learning processes that result from problem solving; iii) learning that occurs in an unplanned manner, resulting from accidental circumstances and, in some cases, devoid of intentionality.

Quantitative literacy is the ability and confidence in using basic mathematical concepts and calculating operations needed for problem solving, decision making of economic problems and their applications in everyday life. Mastery of basic mathematics is an absolute requirement for achieving good quantitative literacy skills. The aim of this activity was to improve mathematical literacy skills of the students at SMA 8 Bengkulu City. The activities were begun by giving pre-tests to students, preparing of modules, presenting the materials of the modules in classroom, practicing through LKS and post-tests. Several techniques, methods and approaches in number counting operations have been presented in this activity. This activity has provided an increase in quantitative literacy skills in class XI IIS-1 SMA 8 Kota Bengkulu. Even so, the improvement of students' abilities can be said to be less optimal because there are still some questions that cannot be answered by almost all students. Therefore, cooperation and involvement of all parties is needed to improve students' quantitative literacy skills and follow-up activities in an effort to strengthen quantitative literacy skills.

The expression of defensive compounds derived from secondary metabolism in plants of Eucalyptus globulus Labill, and the persistence of these in vegetative propagation was evaluated by gas chromatography with flame ionization (GC-FID) and mass spectrometry (MS). The plants were induced by attack from the insect Ctenarytaina eucalypti (“blue gum psyllid”) and by mechanical damage. Defense responses were activated in plants for the different types of tested induction. We identified four defensive compounds present in the leaves of plants induced in entomological form (β-terpineol, aromadendrene, caryophyllene-oxide and eremophilene); all remained in the vegetative propagation. After mechanical induction, we identified three compounds (β-terpineol, aromadendrene and ledol), of which ledol and aromadendrene persisted in the vegetative propagation. Virtually all the compounds detected, in addition to persisting in the vegetative propagation, showed specificity for the induction type, whether entomological or mechanical, except for aromadendrene, which was expressed in both types of induction.

The consolidation of the painting layer or plane and carved gildings which represent different types of detachments is an essential operation for the preservation and restoration of the cultural goods of polychrome wood. Our paper focuses on testing a new type of acrylic binder applied on cracks with blind detachments with an OMRON nebulizer with NE-C28P compressor which sprays microparticles of 3 μm under a hermetic film that covers the operated surfaces. The experiments have been performed on samples of old gilded wood. The results are compared to those obtained by using the traditional process of peliculization of the acrylic binder over the detached surfaces and with the process of spraying. The analysis techniques used are the optical microscope and SEM-EDX.

Different types of herbivores were investigated for their effects on microorganisms in the phyllosphere of forest trees during the growing season. Aphids on spruce, beech, and oak produced honeydew, which was readily consumed by microorganisms and resulted in two to three orders of magnitude higher densities (colony forming units) of bacteria, yeasts, and filamentous fungi on leaves of infested trees. The amounts of honeydew excreted by different aphid species and their mode of excretion (large droplets, tiny droplets scattered over leaves, production of wax wool) affected the degree to which honeydew could be processed by epiphytic microorganisms. All groups of microorganisms appeared to be energy limited. These results were consistent for different growth media offered to the microorganisms. Leaf-feeding moth caterpillars also positively affected the growth of microorganisms on leaves of beech and oak. The effects were more pronounced for bacteria and yeasts especially on oak. Thus, different functional groups of herbivores positively affected the growth of microorganisms in the phyllosphere of trees. It is suggested that the population dynamics of herbivores and their feeding characteristics are important features, which should be considered when the population dynamics of microorganisms in the canopies of trees is studied.

It has been argued that keiretsu in Japan allows its member firms to maintain a financial structure different from that of non-keiretsu member firms. In this paper, we use two different types of financial statement ratio analysis techniques to discover whether Kohonen's self-organizing map (SOM) is able to uncover the differences in financial structures between keiretsu and non-keiretsu firms: ad hoc financial ratios and valuation-based financial ratios. We have found some evidence that SOM enables both financial analysis techniques to recognize different financial structures between the two groups of the firms. Implications of this finding for investment decisions have been discussed.
