Nowadays porous asphalt pavement increase usage other than the traditional type of asphalt pavement. In that sense porous asphalt specially use in the parking areas and walk ways for pedestrian. There are diverse ways that has been done in order to stick up to permanent degradation such as adding fibers and modifiers like polymers, chemical modifiers, expandars, oxidants and antioxidents, hydrocarbons and antistripping to enhance the fatigue and service life of the pavement. To use these type of additives in porous asphalt pavement some additive increase the mechanical performance of porous asphalt mixture and improve the serviceability of the pavement. Digital image processing use these type of pavement to reduce the air void of the asphalt mixture and increase the physical properties of the porous asphalt pavement. This review paper mainly discuss the overall performance and advantage of porous asphalt using different types of additives.

The paper characterizes the porous asphalt mixture used in pavement construction. This kind of pavement can reduce traffic noise and reduce the slipperiness of the road pavement. The effectiveness of the porous asphalt depends on many design and technological aspects, but especially on the air-void clearance in the pavement layer. The paper includes the results of water permeability research based on laboratory tests of specimens from actual road pavement. The research shows the differences between the contamination of the road pavement sections located inside and outside the city. The paper includes recommendations for using porous asphalt based on experiences under Polish conditions.

Coal gangue is the waste of coal mining. It is discharged and stacked all around the mine and the dust pollution has become a public hazard. This paper commits an investigation on the asphalt mixture which takes advantage of coal gangue as coarse aggregate. The physical-mechanical performances of coal gangue aggregate are presented and the result indicates that coal gangue aggregate can meet the specifications except the content of the Flat and Elongate particles (F&E content). By controlling the rational content of F&E in the mixture, different types of asphalt mixes with different percentage of coal gangue coarse aggregate are tested and the overall performance of asphalt mixture is investigated. The result testifies that the asphalt mixture containing coal gangue has the equivalent performance with limestone mixture. It is observed that the coal gangue used as coarse aggregate can guarantee the properties of HMA. Thus the HMA can be used in asphalt pavement.

Porous asphalt (PA) is a type of asphalt mixture that has large air void content to increase the drainage capability of flexible pavement. However, PA suffers a few drawbacks such as less durable and less tensile strength due to large air void characteristic. Thus, this study intended to utilize cellulose fiber to increase the overall performance of PA. Cellulose fiber (CF) used were in the range of 0.2% to 0.6% by weight of PA mixture. Among the tests involve to analyze the overall performance of CF modified PA were Abrasion Loss, Marshall Stability, Resilient Modulus and Dynamic Creep. From data analysis, it shows that 0.4% CF significantly increased the abrasion resistance. Meanwhile, highest stability and resilient modulus values obtained at 0.6% CF-PA. From the results, it shows that the addition of CF can significantly enhance the overall performance of PA.

Abstract Pavement performance is influenced by the selection accuracy of material and gradation. AC-WC has good stability but low porosity, so that puddles often occur on the surface. While porous mixture has high porosity to reduce the puddles quickly but low stability. Therefore, modified asphalt is needed to improve the performance of the mixture. This paper presents of an experimental laboratory study on the physical and mechanical performance of AC-WC and Porous asphalt mixture with Starbit E-55 and Pen 60/70. Laboratory works start with a physical test of all the material used, then, tests to find optimum asphalt content are conducted. Finally, test on Marshall properties and Index of Retained Strength (IRS) were run. Results showed that Starbit is more resistant to temperature than Pen 60/70. AC-WC mixture with Starbit has greater air void, 11% greater stability, 13% greater MQ, and IRS of the mixtures using Starbit were higher than those with Pen 60/70. While the Porous mixture with Starbit has greater air void, 22% higher stability, 13% greater flow, 9% greater MQ compared to Pen 60/7. This proves that the use of Starbit is more effective for improving the structural and functional performance of AC-WC and Porous mixture.

Purpose In order to fully understand the properties of porous asphalt, investigation should be conducted from different point of views. This is from the fact that porous asphalt mixture designed with the same aggregate gradation and air void content can give different infiltration rate due to the different formation of the internal structure. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the micro-structural properties and functional performance of porous asphalt simultaneously. Design/methodology/approach The aim is to develop imaging techniques to process and analyze the internal structure of porous asphalt mixture. A few parameters were established to analyze the air void properties and aggregate interlock within the gyratory compacted samples captured using a non-destructive scanning technique of X-ray computed tomography (CT) throughout the samples. The results were then compared with the functional performance in terms of permeability. Four aggregate gradations used in different countries, i.e. Malaysia, Australia, the USA and Singapore. The samples were tested for resilient modulus and permeability. Quantitative analysis of the microstructure was used to establish the relationships between the air void properties and aggregate interlock and the resilient modulus and permeability. Findings Based on the results, it was found that the micro-structural properties investigated have successfully described the internal structure formation and they reflect the results of resilient modulus and permeability. In addition, the imaging technique which includes the image processing and image analysis for internal structure quantification seems to be very useful and perform well with the X-ray CT images based on the reliable results obtained from the analysis. Research limitations/implications In this study, attention was limited to the study of internal structure of porous asphalt samples prepared in the laboratory using X-ray CT but can also be used to assess the quality of finished asphalt pavements by taking core samples for quantitative and qualitative analysis. The use of CT for material characterization presents a lot of possibilities in the future of asphalt concrete mix design. Originality/value Based on the validation process which includes comparisons between the values obtained from the image analysis and those from the performance test and it was found that the developed procedure satisfactorily assesses the air voids distribution and the aggregate interlock for this reason, it can be used.

Electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) and ladle furnace slag (LFS) are by-products of the electric steelmaking sector with suitable properties for use in bituminous mixtures as both coarse and fine aggregates, respectively. In this research, the production of a porous asphalt mixture with an aggregate skeleton consisting exclusively of electric steelmaking slags (using neither natural aggregates nor fillers) is explored. The test program examines the asphalt mixtures in terms of their mechanical performance (abrasion loss and indirect tensile strength), durability (cold abrasion loss, aging, and long-term behavior), water sensitivity, skid and rutting resistance, and permeability. The results of the slag-mixes are compared with a standard mix, manufactured with siliceous aggregates and cement as filler. The porous mixes manufactured with the slags provided similar results to the conventional standard mixtures. Some issues were noted in relation to compaction difficulties and the higher void contents of the slag mixtures, which reduced their resistance to raveling. Other features linked to permeability and skid resistance were largely improved, suggesting that these mixtures are especially suitable for permeable pavements in rainy regions. In conclusion, a porous asphalt mixture was produced with 100% slag aggregates that met current standards for long-lasting and environmentally friendly mixtures.

It is important to reduce asphalt mixture strong absorption characteristics to improve anti-rutting ability and reduce the urban heat island effect. This paper firstly studies the suction and exothermic regular pattern of existing three types, five kinds of asphalt pavement structure. It turns out that there are differences in suction and exothermic characteristics of different types of pavement structure. Suspension close-grained type structure has higher adiabatic heating; gap-type skeleton has faster speed of suction and exothermic; and dense skeleton has more total quantity of heat storage. Accordingly, test and analysis of cooling effect of Gap-type skeleton asphalt pavement has conducted by adopting smear reflective materials to reduce reflectance and surface adding insulation materials, The results show that reducing reflectivity is the best way which can reduce by 5 centigrade around. In addition , improving effectiveness has also been studied by adding light-colored stone partly replacing mineral aggregate, and substituting busing mullite for aggregate below2.36 mm is the best cooling way ,which can reduce by 3.3 centigrade.

The volume parameter of matrix asphalt mixture is an important target in the design of the semi-flexible pavement. The research used volume-standar to design four kinds of matrix asphalt mixture, fulfilled mechanics performances and performances of semi-flexible pavement material with different aging, compared with common asphalt mixture and researched the effect by air void and pore structure. It proves that the compacted intensity, high-temperature stability and low temperature bend of the semi-flexible pavement material is better than common asphalt pavement material, the performances of matrix asphalt mixture with high air void is better. As for matrix asphalt mixture with same air void but different pore structure, the performances of homogenous grade design is prior to consecutive grade disign.

Purpose Porous asphalt has been used for than 50 years, but it was originally developed in 1970 at Franklin institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 1974 the first formalized procedure was created by the federal highway administration to design mixtures. Many researches on porous asphalt mixture have been conducted for the past two decades. However, there remains some concern about the potential adverse impacts of infiltrated surface water on the underlying groundwater. The purpose of this paper is to presents a short review on the application of porous asphalt pavement stormwater treatment. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, a critical review on history and benefits is presented followed by review of general studies of using porous asphalt pavement, and some recent scientific studies that examine potential contamination of soil and groundwater because of infiltration systems. Findings This paper indicates that porous asphalt pavement is more efficient than conventional pavements in terms of retaining pollutants, improving the quality of water and runoff while maintaining infiltration. Originality/value This paper may also help reduce land consumption by reducing the need for traditional storm-water management structures. However, on the other hand, the priority objectives which is minimizing increased flooding and pollution risks while increasing performance efficiency and enhancing local environmental quality-of-life is achieved.

Abstract: Porous asphalt has low stability but has high permeability caused by the amount of voids in mixture. For that need to be added other materials to increase the value of the stability on a mixture of pavement. . In this study, the added material used is gum rosin. Gum rosin is obtained by distillation/distillation of the sap from the tree pinus merkusii shaped solid clear yellow to dark yellow. The objecteve of this research is to determine the characteristics of porous asphalt mixture by substituting gum rosin on asphalt penetration 60/70. The specimens preparation of Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) followed Australian Asphalt pavement Association (AAPA) Method by  parameter of Cantabro Loss (CL), Asphalt Flow Down (AFD), and Voids In Mix (VIM). Open graded  aggregate was applied and variation in bitumen content of 4,5 %; 5%; 5,5%; 6%; and 6,5% excluding gum rosin. Marshall test and calculatio, CL, and AFD were conducted afterward to obtain OAC. Subsequently, the OAC obtained was used to prepare some specimens of the OAC with  variations  ± 0.5 from the OAC and gum rosin variations of 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%. Permeability and durability test then required specimens at the best optimum asphalt content. Based on this research, the content of the best OAC was 5.56% with gum rosin content of 8% as bitumen substitution material. Besides, almost  all parameter values met the specification of the AAPA (2004). The addition of rosin affect the value of the characteristic of Marshall, CL, and AFD, which increasing the value of stability, VIM, CL, and AFD  along with the increasein percentage of gum rosin. According to the best OAC the value of stability was 554.81 kg, the value of VIM was 18.04%, the value of CL was 20.66%, and the value of AFD was 0.28%.Abstrak: Aspal porus memiliki stabilitas yang rendah namun memiliki permeabilitas tinggi yang disebabkan oleh banyaknya rongga dalam campuran.
