Background Incident-reporting systems are designed to obtain information about events and situations affecting patient safety. These incidents can be used to inform individual and organizational learning and improvement opportunities for quality and patient safety. Aim This study aims to evaluate incident reporting at the Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) since the implementation of Datix and the staff’s behavior towards incident reporting. Methods This is a prospective, mixed methods study. Incident-reporting system reports are used to evaluate the volume of incident reporting before and after implementing the new software. A questionnaire was developed to assess the attitude of hospital staff members to reporting incidents in general and the use of Datix in particular. Results Incident reporting increased in 2017 and 2018 by 51% and 57%, respectively, using Datix compared with the previously implemented software. JHAH has 3812 active employees, with nearly 60% of them using Datix. The study received 377 survey responses (response rate approximately 10%). We received a majority of positive responses about the workplace safety culture and the value of the system. Conclusion Implementation of the Datix reporting system resulted in an increased number of incident reports. An action plan was put in place that may improve incident reporting by further increasing awareness regarding the importance of reporting and supporting more training.

Autonomous occupational safety motivation can be a result of outer and inner reasons for applying safety measures at work. Employees with autonomous motivation behave apply safety measures at their own insticts and initiative, in line with their values and interests. As a result, the behavior of autonomously motivated employees is self-determined and therefore, it should be applied consistently.Along with this kind of motivation, an “identified” workplace  safety motivation is worth mentioning. It is typical for employees who are motivated to apply occupational safety measures because they consider that safe work environment is very important, and that acting in accordance with safety measures is just another step towards safe work environment. The main aim of this paper is to establish potential relations between occupational safety motivation on one side, and age of the examinees, the years of service, and their professional qualifications on the other, in order to implement the results obtained, create safe work environment and, in this way,  increase the productivity.

Introduction: Influenza infection is associated with potential serious complications, increased hospitalization rates, and a higher risk of death. Materials and Methods: A retrospective comparative analysis of selected indicators of hospitalization from the University Hospital in Wroclaw, Poland, was carried out on patients with confirmed influenza infection in comparison to a control group randomly selected from among all other patients hospitalized on the respective wards during the 2018–2019 influenza season. Results: The mean laboratory testing costs for the entire hospital were 3.74-fold higher and the mean imaging test costs were 4.02-fold higher for patients with confirmed influenza than for the control group; the hospital expenses were additionally raised by the cost of antiviral therapy, which is striking when compared against the cost of a single flu vaccine. During the 2018–2019 influenza season, influenza infections among the hospital patients temporarily limited the healthcare service availability in the institution, which resulted in reduced admission rates to the departments related to internal medicine; the mean absence among the hospital staff totaled approximately 7 h per employee, despite 7.3% of the staff having been vaccinated against influenza at the hospital’s expense. Conclusions: There were significant differences in the hospitalization indicators between the patients with confirmed influenza and the control group, which markedly increased the hospital care costs in this multi-specialty university hospital.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic has drastically changed how we live and work. Amid the prolonged pandemic, burnout of the frontline healthcare professionals has become a significant concern. We conducted a cross-sectional survey study to provide data about the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and the prevalence of burnout in healthcare professionals in Japan. Healthcare workers in a single Japanese national university hospital participated in the survey, including basic demographics, whether a participant engaged in care of COVID-19 patients in the past 2 weeks and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Of those, 25.4% fully answered the survey; 33.3% were doctors and 63.6% were nurses, and 36.3% engaged in care of COVID-19 patients in the past 2 weeks. Compared to those belonging to General Medicine, those in Emergency Intensive Care Unit were at higher risk of burnout (odds ratio (OR), 6.7; 95% CI, 1.1–42.1; p = 0.031). Of those who engaged in care of COVID-19 patients, 50% reported burnout while 6.1% did not (OR 8.5, 95% CI; 1.3–54.1; p = 0.014). The burnout of healthcare workers is a significant concern amid the pandemic, which needs to be addressed for sustainable healthcare delivery.
