Objectives: In this study, we sought to determine the prevalence of problematic Internet use (PIU) among high school students and identify demographic and socioeconomic factors related to PIU. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design, we conducted this study between November 2017 and January 2018 of 1412 students attending high schools in the Silivri District of Istanbul in Turkey. We administered a questionnaire inquiring about sociodemographic information, Internet use, and Young's Internet Addiction Test to participating students. Results: Among participants, 18.5% (male = 17.2%; females = 19.8%) were found to show PIU. PIU rates were higher among those with a high household income and lower among those who studied in science high schools, performed physical activities at least 2 days a week, and read at least one book a month. PIU rates were also higher among those who had their own bedrooms, phones, smartphones, Internet connections at home, and social networking accounts. Conclusion: The prevalence of PIU among the participants was 18.5%. Female sex, high household income, low physical activity, grade level, school type, reading fewer than one book per month, and Internet use experience were risk factors for PIU. PIU is considered a significant public health concern across the world, including in Turkey.

This study aimed to determine whether problematic internet use and healthy lifestyle behaviors among high school students varied by gender, grade level, academic average, and school type variables and to investigate the relationship between problematic internet use and healthy lifestyle behaviors. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 310 students enrolled in three different high schools in Giresun province in Turkey, including 159 females and 151 males. The study employed the relational screening model. The data collection tools used in the study were the Problematic Internet Use Scale (PIUS), the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale (HLBS) and a Personal Information Form. Independent group t-test, one-way variance analysis, and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient were utilized in the analysis of the data. The results of the study indicated that problematic internet use varied by grade level, academic average, and school type variable, it did not show a difference according to gender and whether parents live together or apart variables, and that healthy lifestyle behaviors did not show any difference according to any variables at all. In the study, a low negative correlation was found between problematic internet use and healthy lifestyle behaviors. The findings of the study were interpreted and discussed in light of related literature.

Article visualizations:

Abstract Background and aims An important proportion of infants and adolescents in Japan are using Internet-equipped devices, including smartphones, tablets, and game consoles. However, the relationship between the risk of IA and the age at initial habitual Internet use remains unknown. We aimed to investigate this relationship among adolescents. Methods We surveyed 1,775 subjects in seven public junior high schools in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan, in November 2017. Students were asked to complete the Young's Diagnostic Questionnaire (YDQ), which captured information regarding gender, school grade, night sleep, age at which they first started using the Internet at least once weekly, Internet usage situation, and Internet use time for purposes other than study. Data from subjects who reported experience of weekly Internet use were analyzed. Results Junior high school students who were younger at initial weekly Internet use tended to have problematic Internet use (PIU) and to spend more time on Internet activities. In particular, initial weekly Internet use before the age of five in boys was associated with a significantly increased risk of PIU (YDQ ≥ 5), with an odds ratio of 14.955, compared with initial weekly Internet use after the age of 12. Smartphone ownership significantly increased the risk of PIU compared with no ownership among the total population and among girls. Discussion and Conclusions Junior high school male students displayed a robust relationship between initial weekly Internet use and PIU, whereas junior high school female students displayed a particularly strong relationship between smartphone ownership and PIU. Therefore, longitudinal IA preventive education from an early age is necessary.

Paper discusses about problematic internet use on teenagers as Facebook users in West Jakarta. The objective of this study is to have empirical evidence about problematic internet use condition among teenagers as Facebook users in West Jakarta. This research is a descriptive study. Sample of this study was 82 high school students in West Jakarta. They were given GPIUS2 questionnaire constructed by Caplan. Result of the study is most of the teenagers have low score on problematic internet use especially in Facebook usage. The result is supported by the passiveness of Facebook online activity among the teenagers. However, there was a positive significant correlation between problematic internet use (PIU) and teenagers’ feeling when their smartphone was left behind at home. It means they could not access their Facebook account for some time. This result is important for parents and educators to consider, given that Facebook has both positive and negative effect for teenagers.
