The Taiwanese central government views city-county consolidations as an effective method to strengthen national competitiveness and to balance regional development. But for local governments, consolidation presents a series of planning challenges, especially in relation to the reconstruction of planning concepts and discourses in their new territories. Aiming to understand the process, this study first proposes a typology of regional planning concepts as a conceptual tool to explore whether and how the consolidated governments (re)construct their urban-rural planning concepts, and then it examines the factors that may influence (re)conceptualisation through a comparative study of Taichung City and Tainan City. The research results show that overemphasis on using the concept of competitive city regionalism to balance regional development at the national level may lead to a widening of rural-urban disparities at regional and local levels.

Abstract Practicing sports at the age of puberty is important for the development of a harmonious body, as well as for the acquisition of the habit of practicing a sport activity by the teenagers to be during their spare time. This study relies on two data categories: the ones presented by the Romanian Federation of School and University Sports and the results of a vaster project developed by the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport from Iasi in partnership with the School Inspectorate of Iasi County. The research identified the percentage of middle school pupils who have the status of registered sportsmen by carrying out a sociological survey at all the middle schools (36) from the Iasi city. The study monitored a number of 8911 pupils and the statistical processing of the data showed that 4.3% of them are registered at various school sports clubs or private clubs. These values have been compared with the data provided by the Romanian Federation of School and University Sports and we have reached the conclusion that the number of pupils who practice sports is highly heterogeneous.

The Romanian Language Dictionary (2009) defines anxiety as inquietude, unrest, fear. The athletes' emotional states can change easily, especially in less experienced athletes, often near acompetition that demands reaching a goal, or when they find themselves in new situations. This can cause them to block or have no reaction in key moments. Professional sports regard anxietyas a normal reaction of the athlete's body, believing that in this manner it adapts to new conditions and functional parameters. The study was based on the hypothesis stating that anxietycould have various levels in athletes before a competition, according to their sport. The research was conducted on 45 athletes practicing wrestling, track and field, and boxing at a national level, for various Bacau sports clubs. The main research method for this study was the inquiry, and the working instrument was the questionnaire - J. Taylor's anxiety scale.

Aim: Lower limb explosive strength and mae-geri kicking velocity are fundamental in karate competition; although it is unclear whether these variables could differentiate the high-level athletes. The objective of this research is to analyze the differences in the mae-geri kicking velocity and the counter-movement jump (CMJ) between a group of international top level karateka and another group of national-level karateka.

Methods: Thirteen international-level karateka and eleven national-level karateka participated in the study. After a standard warm-up, CMJ height (in cm) and mae-geri kicking velocity (in m/s) was measured using an IR-platform and a high-speed camera, respectively.

Results: Proceeding with MANCOVA to analyze the differences between groups controlling the effect of age, the results show that the international-level karateka demonstrated significantly higher levels of CMJ than national-level competitors (+22.1%, F = 9.47, p = 0.006, η2 = 0.311). There were no significant differences between groups in the mae-geri kicking velocity (+5,7%, F=0.80; p=0.38; η2=0.03).

Conclusion: Our data shows, first, the importance of CMJ assessment as a tool to detect talent in karate and, second, that to achieve international-level in karate it may be important to increase CMJ levels to values similar to those offered here.
