This "practical manual for reasonable parents" presents an odd combination of information. On the one hand there are a series of simple practical recommendations for infant care and child rearing through adolescence, based on currently accepted principles from psychology, psychoanalysis and related fields. On the other hand there are a number of condensed theoretic psychoanalytic expositions on topics such as the stages of early psychosexual development and the traditional concept of the oedipal situation. The practical portions of the text concerning feeding schedules and other aspects of infant care as well as the later chapters on parental handling of children of school age and adolescence are non-controversial, but also fail to present any new material or even a new approach.

AbstractThe widespread proliferation of and interest in bracket pools that accompany the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament have created a need to produce a set of predicted winners for each tournament game by people without expert knowledge of college basketball. Previous research has addressed bracket prediction to some degree, but not nearly on the level of the popular interest in the topic. This paper reviews relevant previous research, and then introduces a rating system for teams using game data from that season prior to the tournament. The ratings from this system are used within a novel, four-predictor probability model to produce sets of bracket predictions for each tournament from 2009 to 2014. This dual-proportion probability model is built around the constraint of two teams with a combined 100% probability of winning a given game. This paper also performs Monte Carlo simulation to investigate whether modifications are necessary from an expected value-based prediction system such as the one introduced in the paper, in order to have the maximum bracket score within a defined group. The findings are that selecting one high-probability “upset” team for one to three late rounds games is likely to outperform other strategies, including one with no modifications to the expected value, as long as the upset choice overlaps a large minority of competing brackets while leaving the bracket some distinguishing characteristics in late rounds.

AbstractElectrochemical modification of animal skin is a new material preparation method and new direction of research exploration. In this study, under the action of the electric field using NaCl as the supporting electrolyte, the effect of electrolysis on Glycyl-glycine(GlyGl), gelatin(Gel) and Three-dimensional rawhide collagen(3DC) were determined. The amino group of GlyGl is quickly eliminated within the anode region by electrolysis isolated by an anion exchange membrane. Using the same method, it was found that the molecular weight of Gel and the isoelectric point of the Gel decreased, and the viscosity and transparency of the Gel solution obviously changed. The electrolytic dissolution and structural changes of 3DC were further investigated. The results of TOC and TN showed that the organic matter in 3DC was dissolved by electrolysis, and the tissue cavitation was obvious. A new approach for the preparation of collagen-based multi-pore biomaterials by electrochemical method was explored.

It is no use looking for the educated musicians who were given a chance to come into longer contact with composition as a school subject being part of their formal education. Meanwhile, fascination with an act of creation and willingness to get familiar with music “from the inside” accompany school-age people. It is then that first, bashful compositional attempts are made. Over time, pupils search for new sounds on their instruments, improvise, experiment, get familiar with music literature. Such attempts should not go unnoticed – an observant pedagogue will easily notice creative predispositions in their pupils. In this article, the author shares his pedagogical experiences gained while giving composition classes at the K. Szymanowski Comprehensive Primary and Secondary Music Schools in Wrocław. The idea of promoting the art of composition was fully implemented in the form of the School Composers’ Club, founded in the school year of 2016/2017, the activity of which is based on the author’s original school curriculum, a system of individualized education and various forms of young composers’ presentations. The Club’s activity assumes, on the one hand, preparing pupils to take up compositional studies and, on the other one, fostering their general musical development enriched with creative competences.

Based on a new approach to symmetries of the fundamental interactions we deal, in this paper, with the electroweak interactions of leptons. We show that the coupling constants, arising in the way leptons are coupled to intermediate bosons, can be understood as parameters associated to the breakdown of SU(2) and parity symmetries. The breakdown of both symmetries is characterized by a new parameter (the asymetry parameter) of the electroweak interactions. This parameter gives a measure of the strength of breakdown of symmetries. We analyse the behaviour of the theory for three values of this parameter. The most relevant value is the one for which only the electromagnetic interactions do not break parity (the maximally allowed left-right asymetric theory). Maximamally allowed parity asymmetry is a requirement that is met for a value of Weinberg's theta-angle that is quite close to the experimental value of this parameter.

The paper makes an attempt to resolve two conceptual mingling: (a) the mingling of the two interpretations of the concept of orderedness applied in statistical thermodynamics and in symmetrology, and (b) the mingling of two interpretations of evolution applied in global and local processes. In conclusion, it formulates a new interpretation on the relation of the emergence of new material qualities in selforganizing processes on the one hand, and the evolution of the universe, on the other. The process of evolution is a sequence of emergence of new material qualities by self-organization processes, which happen in negligible small segments of the universe. Although thermodynamics looks at the universe as a closed (isolated) system, this holds for its outside boundaries only, while the universe has many subsystems inside, which are not isolated (closed), since they are in a permanent exchange of matter, energy, etc. with their environment (with the rest of the universe) through their open boundaries. Any ";;emergence";; takes place, i.e., all new qualities come into being just in these small open segments of the universe. The conditions to apply the second law of thermodynamics are not present here. Therefore, global evolution of the universe is the consequence of local symmetry decreases, local decreases of orderedness, and possible local decreases of entropy.

In the doctoral dissertation "Children with intellectual disability in the integrated school-age care system" the extent and goal fulfilment of after-school recreation centre activities in 19 Swedish municipalities were studied. The study gave high marks to these centres for integrating intellectually disabled children into their activities. The empirics of the dissertation revealed, however, a number of warning signals, which indicated an increase in offering “special solutions” to these children. This article will contain a comparison between the study from 1999 and the one carried out in the spring of 2011. The two studies have followed the same question construction in order to achieve a comparison over time. The aim of study, focusing on children received into schools for the intellectually disabled was to evaluate to what extent integrated activities occurred and to look for factors with a positive impact on the quality of those after-school activities which gathered children from these and compulsory schools in the same groups. On the basis of the comparison made between the 12 years that have passed from the earlier to the later study, it must be regretfully concluded that segregated activities have gained a firm hold on the activities of after-school recreation care centres. Abstract The critical regime plays a primordial role in the study of gradually varying flows by classifying flow regimes and slopes. Through this work, a new approach is proposed to analyze critical flow regime in an egg-shaped channel. Based on both the definition of Froude number and Achour and Bedjaoui general discharge relationship, a relation between critical and normal depths is derived and then graphically represented for the particular case of a smooth channel characterized by a generating diameter equal to one meter. The results show the influence of the slope on the frequency of occurrence of the critical regime. At the same time and independently of the flow rate, a very advantageous approach for the calculation of the Froude number has been proposed. The study shows that there are six zones to differentiate the various flow states, namely: on the one hand for steep slopes two subcritical zones interspersed by a supercritical zone and on the other hand for mild slopes a zone corresponding to uniform flow, an area where the flow is probably gradually varied and finally an area where the flow is abruptly varied. Based on the specific energy equation, a validation process concluded that the proposed relationships were reliable.

It describes the general framework of the information design model. The new approach to research of transition process from traditional libraries cooperation and information services to their alliance, based on the analysis of the impact the interacting elements have on changing the set of their properties and information characteristics.

AbstractPolicy makers increasingly rely on hospital competition to incentivize patients to choose high-value care. Travel distance is one of the most important drivers of patients’ decision. The paper presents a method to numerically measure, for a given hospital, the distance beyond which no patient is expected to choose the hospital for treatment by using a new approach in discrete choice models. To illustrate, we compared 3 hospitals attractiveness related to this distance for asthma patients admissions in 2009 in Hérault (France), showing, as expected, CHU Montpellier is the one with the most important spatial wingspan. For estimation, Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) methods are used.

In recent decades, some epistemological issues have become especially acute in mathematics. These issues are associated with long proofs of various important mathematical results, as well as with a large and constantly increasing number of publications in mathematics. It is assumed that (at least partially) these difficulties can be resolved by referring to computer proofs. However, computer proofs also turn out to be problematic from an epistemological point of view. With regard to both proofs in ordinary (informal) mathematics and computer proofs, the problem of their surveyability appears to be fundamental. Based on the traditional concept of proof, it must be surveyable, otherwise it will not achieve its main goal — the formation of conviction in the correctness of the mathematical result being proved. About 15 years ago, a new approach to the foundations of mathematics began to develop, combining constructivist, structuralist features and a number of advantages of the classical approach to mathematics. This approach is built on the basis of homotopy type theory and is called the univalent foundations of mathematics. Due to itspowerful notion of equality, this approach can significantly reduce the length of formalized proofs, which outlines a way to resolve the epistemological difficulties that have arisen
