<p>The results of study of toxicity of the newly created «Injectable Mevesel» during acute and chronic experiments are presented. There were no lethal cases at intragastric and intramuscular injections, only short-time inhibition of laboratory animals receiving the drug at a dose of 10.0 ml was observed. There were no lethal cases of test animals during the experiment in the conditions of study of accumulation properties of «Injectable Mevesel». Total average dose of the drug administered made up 162500 mg/kg, and accumulation coefficient was respectively 5.3.<br />In the study of morphological blood parameters of rats after intramuscular injection of «Injectable Mevesel» in increasing doses, probable increase in neutrophils count by 36.1%, and probable reduction in lymphocytes count by 15.2% were found.<br />Administration of the drug in increasing doses significantly affects the functional state of internal organs of experimental animals (liver) and causes significant degradation of the membranes of hepatocytes, as evidenced by increased activity of intracellular ALT, AST enzymes and alkaline phosphatase.<br />Therefore, new domestic drug «Injectable Mevesel» created by us belongs to class 4 toxicity criteria, i.e. low-toxic substances.</p>

In the article the results of the study of toxic effect of the designed disinfectant (active ingredient potassium peroxomonosulfate) on laboratory animals (mice) are presented. For the recent years a variety of scientific works both by domestic and by foreign scientists has been devoted to the study of different disinfectants’ toxicity. However today there is a number of issues that require more detailed studying and scientific justification. Among them the problem of toxic effects of disinfectants on the animal organism occupies a special place. The aim of our work was to study the toxic effect on the laboratory animals and to assess the acute toxicity (LD50) of the designed ‘Bondarmin’ disinfectant. Tests were carried out at the Laboratory of pharmacology and toxicology of the National University of Pharmacy (Kharkiv) and on the base of Educational and scientific laboratory of genetic and molecular research methods named after P. I. Verbitskiy in the Kharkiv State Zooveterinary Academy. Acute toxicity assessment (LD50) was carried out with intragastrointestinal administration of the designed drug to laboratory animals (mice). Changes in the internal organs of animals that were removed from the experiment for humane reasons and those who died after the experiment were detected by macroscopic examination. The lethality of laboratory animals after the intragastric administration of disinfectant was determined by the Prozorovskiy method The dynamic of changes in body weight of mice after the administration of disinfectant in high doses (from 1,500 to 3,500 mg/kg) was found out. The influence of the disinfectant on the mass coefficients of the internal organs of male mice after intragastric administration was evaluated. Toxic effect of the designed disinfectant ‘Bondarmin’, when using intragastric method of administration to laboratory animals (mice), according to the age and sexual index (LD50 = 2,702.40 ± 156.32 mg/kg), was established. Disinfectant ‘Bondarmin’ refers to IV toxicity class (low toxic substances).

An alternative test is presented, in which algal cultures are used for testing toxic substances. This test system is based on variations in the size distribution of cells in test cultures as a measurement of growth. Thus, inhibition of mitotic activity is used as a measurement for toxic effects. The test can be performed on a short time-scale and is very sensitive to even weak toxic doses.

Iron (IV) clathrochelate based on a macrobicyclic ligand of the hexahydrazide type is a unique compound that contains iron in a rare high valence IV. Preclinical and clinical studies of this complex, which were started for the first time in Ukraine, have an important theoretical and practical consequence as this complex can be recommended as an active substance in iron-containing drugs with antianemic action. In conducting preclinical studies of new drugs, pathomorphological studies are important because they are a necessary step in studying the biological response of animals to the action of test substances. It was found that some pathological changes develop in the body of white mice under conditions of experimental acute and chronic iron (IV) clathrochelate intoxication. They correlated with the dose of the test compound. During chronic intoxication, the microscopic changes in the liver and kidney of white mice treated with iron (IV) clathrochelate at a dose of 1/10 DL50 were similar to the microscopic changes in the liver and kidney of mice treated with the experimental drug at a dose of 1/5 DL50. However, the severity of these changes was lower, reflecting a lower degree of organ damage. In the myocardium of mice treated with iron (IV) clathrochelate at a dose of 1/5 DL50 on the 10th day, as in acute iron (IV) clathrochelate poisoning, only edema was recorded. The prospects for further research are the study of microscopic changes in the organs of laboratory animals of other species during experimental iron (IV) clathrochelate toxicosis.

Three series of experiments were carried out and lethal doses of the new osteoplastic material 47.5 V were determined by the intraperitoneal and intragastric injection of the material to laboratory animals. A comparative evaluation with Bioactive glass BG-1D was also carried out. It was found that the LD50of 47,5B was 4274.51:4770.58 mg/kg for intragastric injection and 2358.31:2895.65 mg/kg for intraperitoneal injection to rats. In animals getting Bioactive glass BG-1D, these indicators changed slightly, amounting to 3439.04:3810.53 mg/kg and 1732.77:2730.93 mg/kg, respectively. Thus, according to the classification of substances according to the degree of toxicity, these materials can be attributed to practically non-toxic substances (according to the results of intraperitoneal injection of the material suspension to rats and mice) and low-toxic substances (according to the results of intragastric injection of the material suspension to rats)

Shelter environments are stressful for dogs, as they must cope with many stimuli over which they have little control. This can lead to behavioural changes, negatively affect their welfare and downgrade the human‐animal bond, affecting re-homing success. Arousal is evident in their behaviour, particularly increased activity and frequent vocalisation. Environmental enrichment plays an important role in reducing arousal behaviour, either through direct physiological effects or by masking stressful stimuli. The present study focused on sensory environmental enrichment, using olfactory and auditory stimuli under shelter conditions. Sixty dogs were allocated to one of four treatments: three types of enrichment, Lavender, Dog appeasing pheromone (DAP) and Music, and a Control group. Stimuli were applied for 3 h/d on five consecutive days. Dogs exposed to DAP lay down more, and those exposed to Music lay down more with their head down, compared to the Control. Those in the Control stood more on their hind legs with their front legs on the exit door, compared to those exposed to Music and DAP, particularly if they had only been in the shelter for a short time. They also panted and vocalised much more than dogs in the three enrichment treatments, which tended to persist during the 4 h period post treatment, and in the case of vocalisation into the subsequent night. The study suggests that all three enrichments had some positive benefits for dogs in shelters, as well as being non-invasive and easy to apply in the shelter environment.

A study has been made of metamorphosis in anadromous sea lampreys in New Brunswick between 1973 and 1976. The stages (1–7) commence with the recently described 'prometamorphic ammocoete' (Youson, J. H., G. M. Wright, and E. C. Ooi. 1977. The timing of changes in several internal organs during metamorphosis of anadromous larval lamprey Petromyzon marinus L. Can. J. Zool. 55: 469–473.) and conclude with one similar to the newly metamorphosed landlocked sea lamprey (Manion, P. J., and T. M. Stauffer. 1970. Metamorphosis of the landlocked sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus. J. Fish. Res. Board Can. 27: 1735–1746.). Most of the marked quantitative changes exhibited by certain regions of the body can be directly related to adaptations for suctorial feeding, increased activity, and a predaceous mode of life. Reductions in the prebranchial length are almost certainly associated with changes in the pharyngeal basket which facilitate alterations in the direction of the respiratory water flow. The timing of metamorphosis was remarkably synchronous both within and between years, representatives of the earliest stages (1–2) being found only between July 7 and 28 while after September 14 only stage 7 animals were caught. During metamorphosis the lengths of the animals changed little whereas their weights declined significantly. The weights and condition factors of stage 1–2 animals were significantly greater than those of larvae of comparable length. This feature, presumably related to lipid accumulation at the end of larval life, is discussed in the context of factors influencing the onset of metamorphosis.
