El presente estudio evaluó la capacidad antioxidante de los extractos de dieciséis plantas medicinales: escoba amarga (Parthenium hysterophons), ajenjo (Artemisia absinthium), guarumo (t), chaya (Cnidoscolus chayamansa), borraja (Borago officinalis), balsa (Ochroma sp.), linaza (Linum usitatissimum), hierba Luisa (Cymbopogon citratus), toronjil (Melissa officinalis), buganvilla (Bougainvillea spectabilis), alcachofa (Cynara scolymus), guaviduca (Piper carpunya), altamisa (Ambrosia cumanensis), diente de león (Taxacum officinales), buscapina (Parietaria officinalis) y moringa (Moringa oleifera). Para ello, se usó el método DPPH (radical 1,1-difenil-2-picrilhidrazil); además, se realizaron ensayos de reconocimiento de metabolitos secundarios a fin de obtener los primeros indicios de compuestos de interés fitoquímico. La actividad captadora de radicales libres de los extractos se expresó como valor de IC50 (μg/mL) (cantidad necesaria para inhibir la formación de radicales DPPH en un 50%). El valor bajo de IC50 refleja mejor acción eliminadora de radicales libres. Aunque la mayoría de las muestras evaluadas mostraron buena capacidad antioxidante con este método (DPPH), los ensayos de los extractos hidro-alcohólicos demuestran que la alcachofa (IC50 9,89 μg/mL), moringa (IC50 11,4 μg/mL) y borraja (IC50 14,0 μg/mL) presentaron mayor capacidad antioxidante. Mediante las pruebas químicas de caracterización, se detectó la presencia de flavonoides, taninos, triterpenos, alcaloides y saponinas en la mayoría de las especies analizadas (aproximadamente 56-69%); tan sólo un 20% de las mismas mostró la presencia de polifenoles, glucósidos cianogénicos, lactonas, cumarinas, esteroles y antraquinonas. Según los resultados, se podría considerar a estas plantas como fuentes prometedoras de metabolitos secundarios con actividad antioxidante.  ABSTRACTThis study evaluated the antioxidant capacity of sixteen medicinal plants: Escoba amarga (Parthenium hysterophons), ajenjo (Artemisia absinthium), guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia), chaya (Cnidoscolus chayamansa), borraja (Borago officinalis), balsa (Ochroma sp.), linaza (Linum usitatissimum), hierba Luisa (Cymbopogon citratus), toronjil (Melissa officinalis), buganvilla (Bougainvillea spectabilis), alcachofa (Cynara scolymus), guaviduca (Piper carpunya), altamisa (Ambrosia cumanensis), diente de León (Taxacum officinales), buscapina (Parietaria officinalis)and moringa (Moringa oleifera). For this, the DPPH (radical 1, 1-difenil-2-picrilhidrazil) method was used; furthermore, recognition assays of secondary metabolites were performed, in order to obtain the first signs of phytochemical compounds of interest. The free radical scavenging activity of the extracts was expressed as IC50 value (g/mL) (necessary amount to inhibit the formation of 50% of DPPH radical). The low value of IC50 reflects better free radical scavenging action. Although most of the samples tested showed good antioxidant capacity with this method (DPPH), tests of hydroalcoholic extracts show that alcachofa (IC50 9.89 mg/mL), moringa (IC50 11.4 mg/mL) and borraja (IC50 14.0 mg/mL) were those with higher antioxidant capacity. Through chemical characterization tests, the presence of flavonoids, tannins, triterpenes, alkaloids and saponins were detected in most of the analyzed species (approximately 56-69%); only 20% of them showed the presence of polyphenols, cyanogenic glycosides, lactones, coumarins, anthraquinones and sterols. According to the results obtained, these plants might be considered as promising sources of secondary metabolites with antioxidant activity.

The paper presents the results of studying fruits antioxidant properties of several species, previously combined into the genus Sorbus L. (Rosaceae family). Ripe fruits were collected in September 2020 from the plants of Cormus domestica (L.) Spach, Sorbus aucuparia L., Karpatiosorbus latifolia (Lam.) Sennikov & Kurtto and Torminalis glaberrima (Gand.) Sennikov & Kurtto from the collection of the Botanical Garden of the Oles Honchar Dnipro National University. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were determined both in the fruits peel and pulp. In the fruits of all species, higher values of the determined indicators were found in the fruit peel than in the pulp. Moderate and strong positive correlation was found between FRAP and TPC as well between FRAP and TFC both in peel and pulp of all studied species. At the same time, notable interspecific differences of the phytochemical traits were established, indirectly confirming the ambiguity of the taxonomy of the genus Sorbus L. According to the fruits antioxidant properties and secondary metabolites accumulation, species K. latifolia (broad-leaved whitebeam) and T. glaberrima (wild service-tree) are the most promising for cultivation in arid conditions of the central steppe of Ukraine.

The genus Lilium contains more than 100 wild species and numerous hybrid varieties. Some species of them have been used as medicine and food since ancient times. However, the research on the active components and the medical properties of lilies has only focused on a few species. In this study, the total phenolic acid content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant capacity of 22 representative lilies were systematically investigated. The results showed that the TPC, TFC and antioxidant activity were highly variable among different lilies, but they were significantly positively correlated. Hierarchical cluster analysis indicated that L. henryi and L. regale were arranged in one group characterized by the highest TPC, TFC and antioxidant capacity, followed by Oriental hybrids and Trumpet and Oriental hybrids. The traditional edible and medicinal lilies were clustered in low TPC, TFC and antioxidant capacity group. A total of 577 secondary metabolites, including 201 flavonoids, 153 phenolic acids, were identified in the five species with great differences in antioxidant capacity by extensive targeted metabonomics. Differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) analysis reviewed that the DAMs were mainly enriched in secondary metabolic pathways such as isoflavonoid, folate, flavonoid, flavone, flavonol, phenylpropanoid, isoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis, nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism and so on. Correlation analysis identified that 64 metabolites were significantly positively correlated with antioxidant capacity (r ≥ 0.9 and p < 0.0001). These results suggested that the genus Lilium has great biodiversity in bioactive components. The data obtained greatly expand our knowledge of the bioactive constituents of Lilium spp. Additionally, it also highlights the potential application of Lilium plants as antioxidants, functional ingredients, cosmetic products and nutraceuticals.

Secondary metabolites have been extensively used in the treatment of various health problems. The role of solvent polarity on the phytochemical isolation and antioxidant capacity of Isatis tinctoria (woad) is elusive. In the present study, 14 solvents with different polarity were used in the extraction and total phenolic and flavonoid content (TPC and TFC) investigation. Ferricyanide, phosphomolybdenum, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods were used to calculate and compare the antioxidant/free radical scavenging capacity. Our results showed that solvent polarity greatly affects TPC and TFC yield, which is mainly increasing with increasing solvent polarity index and suddenly decreasing at very high polarity. The comparative results showed that TPC is directly correlated with reducing power, antioxidant, and free radical scavenging capacity. Taken together, we conclude that different woad plant parts contain different level of secondary metabolites with a specific polarity that requires a particular solvent with an appropriate polarity index for the extraction. The identification of these biologically active crude extracts and fractions are very important for the basic biological sciences, pharmaceutical applications, and future research for HPLC based active compounds isolation.

AbstractPhenylpropanoids are a large class of plant secondary metabolites, which play essential roles in human health mainly associated with their antioxidant activity. Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is a rich source of phytonutrients, including phenylpropanoids, which have been shown to have beneficial effects on human health. In this study, using the F. × ananassa ‘232’ × ‘1392’ F1 segregating population, we analyzed the genetic control of individual phenylpropanoid metabolites, total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity (TEAC) in strawberry fruit over two seasons. We have identified a total of 7, 9, and 309 quantitative trait loci (QTL) for TPC, TEAC and for 77 polar secondary metabolites, respectively. Hotspots of stable QTL for health-related antioxidant compounds were detected on linkage groups LG IV-3, LG V-2 and V-4, and LG VI-1 and VI-2, where associated markers represent useful targets for marker-assisted selection of new varieties with increased levels of antioxidant secondary compounds. Moreover, differential expression of candidate genes for major and stable mQTLs was studied in fruits of contrasting lines in important flavonoids. Our results indicate that higher expression of FaF3′H, which encodes the flavonoid 3′-hydroxylase, is associated with increased content of these important flavonoids.
