This study investigated the chemical properties of Durio zibethinus (Durian) in Malaysia. The cultivars included in the present study were D101, D197, and Kampung. A wide range of chemical properties such as proximate nutritional content, minerals, total phenolic content was analysed using established analytical methods. The antioxidant capacity in term of free radical scavenging activity was determined using colorimetric assay, whereas metabolite profiles of samples were analysed by hyphenated high throughput tool like GC-MS. The results showed that D197 durian had the highest content of ash, protein, fat, and carbohydrate, but the lowest moisture level. Potassium was found to be the highest mineral (8.68–11.36 mg g–1), followed by sodium (3.2–7.6 mg g–1), magnesium (0.86–1.88 mg g–1), and calcium (2.74–3.80 mg g–1) in the tested cultivars. The major sulphur containing compounds (% relative peak area) such as hydrogen sulphide (5.0–8.3%), methanethiol (0.5–1.0%), ethanethiol (20.7–35.0%), 1-propanethiol (2.7– 9.5%), and diethyl disulphide (0.6–1.9%), and esters, especially ethyl 2-methylbutanoate (10.0–15.0%), methyl 2-methylbutanoate (1.0%), and propyl 2-methylbutanoate (1.5%) were detected when fresh samples were heated in headspace GC-MS. However, those compounds evaporated during ultrasound assisted extraction and oven drying even at 40 °C.

The aim of this study was to optimize the extraction of antioxidant compounds from Schinus areira leaves using  ultrasound assisted extraction and response surface methodology. The effect of sonication time and plant material:solvent ratio were used to optimize the recovery. Results showed that a high recovery of antioxidant compounds from leaves of three different S. areira specimens was achieved under optimized conditions. The leaf extracts obtained displayed a DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity analogous to the well-known antioxidant trolox  (EC50 = 23-46 vs 36.1 µg/mL, respectively). In addition, these extracts showed a good potency to eliminate superoxide and nitric oxide-radicals as well as a moderate antimicrobial activity against gram positive Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis and yeast. HPLC chromatography analysis of the three S. areira leaf extracts showed different high contents of kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, quercetin-3-O-galactoside and 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid. The results showed that the S. areira leaf extracts contained a high amount of antioxidant phenolic compounds, which might be a valuable source to be used as additives in plant-based foods.

Extracts and infusions of wild artichoke ( Cynara cardunculus L.) and globe artichoke ( C. scolymus L.) (heads, bracts and stems) were examined for their total phenolic content (TPC) and their antioxidant activity after performing Classical Extraction (CE) and Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE). UAE proved to be more effective, since extracts exhibited higher antioxidant activity and TPC values than CE extracts and infusions. Moreover C. cardunculus heads extract using UAE, displayed the maximum TPC values (1.57 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) g−1 fresh weight (fw)), the highest DPPH• scavenging activity (IC50; 0.91mg mL−1) and the highest ABTS•+ radical scavenging capacity (2.08 mg Trolox Equivalents (TE) g−1 fw). Moreover, the effect of different concentrations of C. cardunculus head extracts (showing the highest TPC and antioxidant activity) on Aspergillus parasiticus growth was estimated in AFPA medium. The maximum inhibition was found to be ~42.1% in comparison with the control.

Developments of food supplements and nutraceuticals from different natural origins require the use of some extraction methods. The success of the procedure relies on theefficiency of the extraction methods. Therefore, extraction methods need to be optimized. This work aimed for the determination of optimal conditions of ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) of antioxidant constituents from okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) seeds which contain high contents of polysaccharides, polyphenols and flavonoids using response-surface methodology based on Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD). The independent variables of UAE were extraction time (Et, 10-20 min), extraction solvent composition (EC, 50-100% methanol) and extraction solvent volume (EV, 10-20 mL). 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity, 2,2'-azinobis- (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical-scavenging activity and N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride (DMPD) radical-scavenging activity were dependent variables. Optimal extraction conditions for UAE from okra seed were: 20 mL volume of 70% methanol at 10 min extraction time for DPPH inhibition; 20 mL volume of 50% methanol at 20 min for ABTS inhibition; 15 mL volume of 55% methanol at 12 min for DMPD inhibition. Under these optimum extraction conditions, the effectiveness of UAE of okra seed was successfully revealed. So, this practical extraction technique can be widely used for the achievement of dietary supplements and nutraceuticals.

Zingiber officinale is a tropical produce which is susceptible to chilling injury due to improper storage temperature management. Therefore, the objective of the study was to investigate the development of chilling injury (CI) in ‘Bentong’ ginger rhizome. Fresh ‘Bentong’ ginger rhizomes were harvested at 9-10 months and were stored at 5, 15 and 25°C for 0, 8, 16, and 24 days. The treatments were evaluated for the effects of storage temperatures and storage durations on postharvest chemical qualities of ginger rhizomes. The experiment showed significant interaction effects between storage temperature and storage durations for total flavonoid contents (TFC), total phenolic contents (TPC), 6- gingerol, 6-shogaol, and DPPH radical scavenging activity of the treated rhizome. Ginger stored at 15°C showed the highest TPC at 16 days of storage and then reduced throughout the storage as compared to the ginger stored at 5°C and 25°C. The 6-gingerol content increased from day 0 to day 16 and resulted in an optimum content at 66.7 mg/g fresh weight when it was stored at 15°C. 6-shogaol was identified in smaller quantities within the range of 1.52 to 3.11 mg/100 g of fresh weight. A similar trend was also observed in 6 -shogoal after 24 days of the storage. DPPH scavenging activity showed that storage at 5 and 25°C resulted in a decrease of DPPH inhibition along with storage durations. Therefore, it was suggested that the ginger was best kept at 15°C up to 16 days of storage in order to maintain the postharvest qualities and chemical properties of ginger.

Tagetes erecta, the Mexican marigold, also called Aztec marigold, is a species of the genus Tagetes native to Mexico. Despite its being native to the Americas, it is often called African marigold. It is well known for its antimicrobial, antiseptic, wound and ulcer healing, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiviral properties, and it has a long history of being used as an herbal remedy. T. erecta produces a variety of substances that possess pharmacological effects and antioxidant activity.  The present study aims to analyze the antioxidant property of a beverage made of dried T. erecta L. flowers petals, cultivated in West Bengal, India. Radical scavenging potential was determined using H2O2 (Hydrogen peroxide) scavenging assay, which showed that with increase in concentration of the sample, the % of inhibition also increased. The total flavonoid content of the residue left after filtering the beverage, made from dried and processed Tagetes flower was found to be 530.32 mg/g dry weight, using a standard curve of quercetin. Furthermore, the total phenolic content of the same was estimated, taking a standard curve of Gallic acid, and was calculated to be 78.31mg GAE/ g of dry sample. This study suggests that the flowers of Tagetes erecta L. are the possible sources of natural radical scavengers. Thus, black tea leaves could be used as natural antioxidants in the beverage, food and pharmaceutical industries that need further wide range in vivo studies.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction of phenolic antioxidants from Lotus corniculatus was optimized using response surface methodology. The extraction was performed according to the Box–Behnken design with ethanol concentration, temperature, and pH, as independent variables. The responses were extraction yield, DPPH radical scavenging activity (RSA) IC50 and content of different phenolic compounds (total phenols, flavonoids and phenolic acids, as well as quercetin, kaempferol and genistein derivatives). The models were used to calculate best conditions for maximal extraction of phenolic compounds and antiradical activity. Use of the optimized extraction parameters increased the content of quercetin and kaempferol derivatives more than tenfold (from 6.07 to 65.10 mg mL–1 and 6.69 to 92.75 mg mL–1, respectively). The results of this work stress the importance of careful selection of conditions for flavonoids extraction. Abundance of bioactive phenolics in L. corniculatus extracts obtained under optimized extraction conditions opens the possibility for wider utilization of this plant.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of conventional and ultrasound-assisted extraction (frequency, time, temperature) on the content of bioactive compounds as well as on the antioxidant activity of aqueous extracts from fresh lemon balm and peppermint leaves. Total phenols, flavonoids, non-flavonoids, total chlorophylls, total carotenoids, and radical scavenging capacity were determined. Moreover, the relationship between bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity was studied by linear regression. A significant increase in all studied bioactive compounds during ultrasonic extraction for 5 to 20 min was found. With the classical extraction method, the highest amounts of total phenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity were determined, and the maximum amounts of total chlorophylls and carotenoids were determined during 20 min ultrasonic extraction. The correlation analysis revealed a strong, positive relationship between antioxidant activity and total phenolic compounds.

Painted nettle (Plectranthus scutellarioides (L.) R.Br.) is an ornamental plant belonging to Lamiaceae family, native of Asia. Its leaves constitute one of the richest sources of trans-rosmarinic acid, a well-known antioxidant and antimicrobial phenolic compound. These biological activities attract interest from the cosmetic industry and the demand for the development of green sustainable extraction processes. Here, we report on the optimization and validation of an ultrasound-assisted extraction (USAE) method using ethanol as solvent. Following preliminary single factor experiments, the identified limiting extraction parameters (i.e., ultrasound frequency, extraction duration, and ethanol concentration) were further optimized using a full factorial design approach. The method was then validated following the recommendations of the association of analytical communities (AOAC) to ensure the precision and accuracy of the method used to quantify trans-rosmarinic acid. Highest trans-rosmarinic acid content was obtained using pure ethanol as extraction solvent following a 45-minute extraction in an ultrasound bath operating at an ultrasound frequency of 30 kHz. The antioxidant (in vitro radical scavenging activity) and antimicrobial (directed toward Staphylococcus aureus ACTT6538) activities were significantly correlated with the trans-rosmarinic acid concentration of the extract evidencing that these key biological activities were retained following the extraction using this validated method. Under these conditions, 110.8 mg/g DW of trans-rosmarinic acid were extracted from lyophilized P. scutellarioides leaves as starting material evidencing the great potential of this renewable material for cosmetic applications. Comparison to other classical extraction methods evidenced a clear benefit of the present USAE method both in terms of yield and extraction duration.
