Background and purpose: Surveys on the proportion of contraception uptake have been regularly conducted in Indonesia, including Bali Province. However, very limited studies have explored contraceptive continuation rates. This study aims to examine continuation rates for injectable contraception and IUD including its determinants. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Buleleng District. A total of 100 reproductive age women who ever used or currently using injectable contraception or IUD were recruited to participate in the study. One village at Buleleng District was purposively selected and samples were selected from all registered reproductive age couples at the village using a systematic random sampling method. Data were collected through home interviews and were analysed using survival analysis to calculate contraceptive continuation rates. Multivariate analysis were performed using cox regression to identify factors associated to continuation rates for injectable contraception and IUD. Analysis was done using STATA SE 12.1.Results: The one year continuation rate for IUD for first child was 84.62% whereas for injectable contraception was 71.03%. When sex variable of the child was applied, the one year continuation rate for IUD for first child was higher among those who have male child (81.82%) than female child (66.67%). Similarly, the one year continuation rate for injectable contraception was higher among those who have male child (79.10%) than female child (57.58%). The one year contraceptive continuation rate is also higher for the second child than the first one (79.56 vs 71.03 for injectable and 87.88 vs 84.62 for IUD). The multivariate analysis showed that perceived quality of family planning services was associated to contraceptive continuation rates (AHR=2.54; 95%CI: 1.22-5.29).Conclusions: The continuation rate for IUD was higher than injectable contraception. Higher contraceptive continuation rate was found among those who have male children. The contraceptive continuation rate was associated with perceived quality of family planning services. Interventions to improve the quality of family planning services are warranted.

<em>Mothers are family members who play an important role in family life. Maternal deaths that occur in every minute at every day are mostly caused by complications related to pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperal. Contraceptive use in reproductive age couples is one of the strategies of the family planning to reduce maternal mortality. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with contraceptive use in reproductive age couples. This study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The samples were 56 people selected using a non-probability sampling technique, i.e., purposive sampling.  Data were analyzed using Rank Spearman test and contingency coefficient test. The results showed that there was a correlation between contraceptive use and factors of age, education, employment, customs / culture and quality of family planning services with a p-value of &lt;0.05. This study recommends that Mengwi Public Health Center I provide a counseling room for family planning acceptors and increase the schedule of family planning services as well as improve the quality of health workers especially in giving counseling about contraceptive use.</em>

Abstract BackgroundStrengthening quality of family planning care is a key objective in Togo to improve maternal and reproductive health. Structural attributes or inputs to care, and process attributes or content of care, including providers’ interaction with clients, are key factors determining quality of care. Client satisfaction with family planning services is linked to contraceptive uptake and continuation, yet the relationship between quality of care elements and client satisfaction of family planning services has not been assessed in Togo, particularly process factors related to client-provider interactions. MethodsWe conduct a secondary analysis using data from a facility-based survey. The survey was conducted in August 2016 in six health districts of Lomé Togo, including a facility audit (N=16), client observations (N=1096) and client exit interviews with women of reproductive age (N=1089). We used multi-variable logistic regression to assess the association between factors related with service structure and process, including provider-client interaction and client perception of provider treatment as a proxy for client satisfaction.ResultsWe did not find a relationship between structural attributes of quality and client perception of provider treatment. Among process attributes, we found that several behaviors related to interpersonal skills, including encouraging clients to ask questions and asking clients to describe any concerns they have with their method, and providers use of visual aids were significantly associated with client perception of provider treatment. ConclusionThe quality of care a woman receives when seeking to adopt or continue family planning methods is essential to improving use of family planning service. Family planning programs must address provider related behaviors that may inhibit the uptake and continuation of contraceptive use, and strengthen inter-personal skills, which may improve client perception of provider treatment with services and facilitate their continued use.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Family planning services have important role in improving the quality of the lives of a couple and their economic welfare. The objective of the study was to assess the level of awareness and acceptance of different family planning methods among women undergoing to medical termination of pregnancy (MTP).</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> This study was done at IGMC KNSHM&amp;C Shimla on 1168 women who reported for MTP in department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This study was conducted to find out the awareness about the contraceptive practices, source of information and knowledge, the most preferred method and impact of MTP on acceptance of contraception.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Majority about 97.5% had knowledge about the contraceptive methods and only 2.5% were unaware of any method. Source of information was health and family planning staff. The next source was friends, relatives and mass media, teaching institutions had least role. In spite of knowledge only about 49% were practicing contraception prior to MTP that too OCP and CC only.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Majority of women had optimal knowledge but only less than half of them were using contraceptives. Lacuna is still there, we need to educate and motivate couples to improve family planning services. There is a great need to strengthen the awareness, education and communication regarding various family planning methods in women of reproductive age group.</p>

This article presents the results of a number of operations research studies (OR) of family planning services provided by a new cadre of female village-based family planning workers in Punjab Province, Pakistan. This cadre of workers, recruited nationwide, have been trained to visit women in their villages to provide information and family planning services. The studies were conducted as part of a broad program of technical assistance to the Government of Pakistan. Surveys investigated the quality of their training as well as attitudes among clients to the new program. They found that the program is developing well but there is room for improvement, particularly in counseling and training. Additional field studies are ongoing and recommendations for change have been incorporated in training and supervision. The program is expanding on a national scale.

Transforming family planning rights into practices is not an easy task especially in a developing nation like Nepal where society is patriarchal and literacy is low. Besides, coverage and quality of reproductive health services and active involvement of the community is crucial in the transformation. For properly addressing these challenges, all the sectors that provide family planning services need to act on advocacy, creating demand, reshaping service delivery, sustainability (financial and self-reliance) and high level political and financial commitments are necessary.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/hprospect.v12i2.9874 Health Prospect Vol.12(2) 2013: 42-46
