ABSTRACTWe have developed a new type of near net shape sintering process using nitridation of Si and other inorganic powders. In this report, the sintering property of powder mixture compacts of TiC (10μm or 0.9μm) and Si (0.9μm) in a nitrogen atmosphere at 1350°C was investigated.A large portion of the Si formed Si3N4 on reaction with nitrogen, while TiC formed TiN and free carbon. A small portion of this free carbon was converted into β-SiC on reaction with Si and about 98% of the free carbon remained in the sintered body. Thus, composite ceramics having a composition of Si3N4·TiC·TiN·C·β-SiC were obtained. The porosity of this composite was much smaller than that of ordinary Si3N4 bonded ceramics, because of the large volume expansion for formation of free carbon. The pore size under 5μm can be got using TiC powder with an avarage size of 0.9μm.

Abstract This work considers one of the approaches to the solution of the task of discrete speech signal automatic segmentation. The aim of this work is to construct such an algorithm which should meet the following requirements: segmentation of a signal into acoustically homogeneous segments, high accuracy and segmentation speed, unambiguity and reproducibility of segmentation results, lack of necessity of preliminary training with the use of a special set consisting of manually segmented signals. Development of the algorithm which corresponds to the given requirements was conditioned by the necessity of formation of automatically segmented speech databases that have a large volume. One of the new approaches to the solution of this task is viewed in this article. For this purpose we use the new type of informative features named TAC-coefficients (Throat-Acoustic Correlation coefficients) which provide sufficient segmentation accuracy and effi- ciency.

Blended Elemental Powder Metallurgy (BE-PM) is a very attractive method for producing titanium alloys, which can be near-net shape formed with compositional freedom. However, a minimization of oxygen pick-up during processing into manufactured parts is a big challenge for powder metallurgy of titanium alloys. In this paper, different approaches for preparing titanium alloy parts by powder compact extrusion with 0.05-0.1wt.% of oxygen pick-up during manufacturing are discussed. The starting materials were a powder mixture of HDH titanium powder, other elemental powders and a master alloy powder. Different titanium alloys and composites, such as Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-4Al-4Sn-4Mo-0.5Si, Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr, and Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr-5vol%TiB, with different profiles such as round and rectangular bars, a wedge profile, wire and tubes have been successfully manufactured on a laboratory and pilot-plant scale. Furthermore, a possible route for scaling up the titanium processing capabilities in the University of Waikato has also been discussed.

In this paper, a new type of Ti3SiC2/Cu composites with the volume fractions of 30% Ti3SiC2 particle was prepared by hot pressing and vacuum sintering respectively. The effects of sintering temperature and holding time on the density, resistance and Vickers hardness of Cu-30vol%Ti3SiC2 composite were investigated. The results show that the mechanical properties of the composites prepared by hot pressing are better than that prepared by vacuum sintering. The relative densities of Cu-30vol% Ti3SiC2 composites are rather high in suitable sintering conditions. It achieved 100% for the composites prepared by hot pressing at 930°C for 2h, and 98.4% for the composites prepared by vacuum sintering at 1250°C for 1h. At the same time, the maximum Vickers hardness reached 1735MPa at 900°C by hot pressing. The resistance and Vickers hardness of the composites decreased with an increase in sintering temperature, whereas the density increased. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to observe the microstructure of the composites. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties was discussed.
