AbstractSemispherical self assemblies of colloids have been fabricated on a substrate using inkjet printing with an ink of submicron-sized monodisperse silica particles. Colloidal silica has been prepared by Stöber process. The shape and monodispersity of the synthesized colloidal particles were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser light scattering particle analyzer. Simple test patterns on various substrates (silicon wafer, Cu foil, and Mylar film) were printed with commercial HP printer. It was found that the uniformity and spatial extent of the self-assembled colloidal silica within a dot were significantly influenced by the contact angle between ink and substrates. Ink droplets printed on the hydrophobic Mylar film maintain a higher contact angle as compared to the hydrophilic substrates such as Si wafer. Slower evaporation and high capillary stress exerted on the ink droplet allow hemispherical colloidal aggregates with an ordered internal structure on Mylar film.

AbstractIn this research, sodium dodecyl sulfates (SDS) and N-cetyl-n,n,n-trimethyammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant solutions are used as solvents of polystyrene (PS) colloidal suspension during the fabrication of colloidal crystals. The effects of the surfactant on the quality and the morphology of the colloidal crystals are studied. It was found that surfactants not only change the charge of PS colloidal particles, but also significantly changed the surface tension and the 3 phase contact angle of the suspension with respect to the glass substrate, in turn they change the thickness of the formed crystal as well as the crystal structure. The derived knowledge will be potentially useful in clarifying the mechanisms involved in the formation of colloidal crystals.

In this paper, an original method of synthesis of coil–brush amphiphilic polystyrene-b-(polyglycidol-g-polyglycidol) (PS-b-(PGL-g-PGL)) block copolymers was developed. The hypothesis that their hydrophilicity and micellization can be controlled by polyglycidol blocks architecture was verified. The research enabled comparison of behavior in water of PS-b-PGL copolymers and block–brush copolymers PS-b-(PGL-g-PGL) with similar composition. The coil–brush copolymers were composed of PS-b-PGL linear core with average DPn of polystyrene 29 and 13 of polyglycidol blocks. The DPn of polyglycidol side blocks of coil–b–brush copolymers were 2, 7, and 11, respectively. The copolymers were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, GPC, and FTIR methods. The hydrophilicity of films from the linear and coil–brush copolymers was determined by water contact angle measurements in static conditions. The behavior of coil–brush copolymers in water and their critical micellization concentration (CMC) were determined by UV-VIS using 1,6-diphenylhexa-1,3,5-trien (DPH) as marker and by DLS. The CMC values for brush copolymers were much higher than for linear species with similar PGL content. The results of the copolymer film wettability and the copolymer self-assembly studies were related to fraction of hydrophilic polyglycidol. The CMC for both types of polymers increased exponentially with increasing content of polyglycidol.

Three kinds of colloidal silica (CS)/silane sol solutions were synthesized in variation with parameters such as different acidity and reaction time. Sol solutions were prepared from HSA CS/ methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), LS CS/MTMS and LS CS/MTMS/γ -Glycidoxypropyltri methoxysilane (ES) solutions. In order to understand their physical and chemical properties, sol-gel coating films were fabricated on glass. Coating films on glass, obtained from LS/MTMS sol, had high contact angle, also, much enhanced flat surface in the case of LS/MTMS sol was observed in comparison with HSA/ MTMS sol. From all sol-gel solutions, seasoning effect of for enhancing properties of sol-gel coating layer on glass was observed while such sol-gel solutions were left for 7days. In initial stage of sol-gel reaction, all most of sol solutions used in this work seem to be unstable, formation of coating films was a little hazy and rough. However, improved coating films as observed in 4days later. LS/MTMS/ES sol solutions were synthesized with ES, adding to LS/MTMS sol. Contact angle of LS/MTMS/ES sol-gel coating films decreased, since ES played a role in forming hydrophilic hydroxyl sol. The elastic portion of coating films prepared from LS/MTMS/ES sol increased with addition of ES, but thermal stability decreased a little.

Contact angle is a very important parameter to investigate the function mechanism of chemical admixtures as well as the capillary stress resulted from self-desiccation or drying. However, in most of the studies, it is only assumed to be 0 degrees. This paper studied the contact angle of hardened cement paste using thin wicking method. A serious of study was conducted on the influence of layer preparation, pre-contacting method, cement paste powder size, and suspension concentration on the measuring results. An optimized thin layer wicking method was proposed for determining the contact angle of hardened cement paste, which improves effectively the linear correlation of the penetration distance - time curve and satisfies the prerequisite of Washburn function.
