The aim of the present paper is to apply the mechanical alloying process to obtain from powder components a new biodegradable Mg-based alloy powder from the system Mg-xZn-Zr-Ca, with high biomechanical and biochemical performance. Various processing parameters for mechanical alloying have been experimented with the ultimate goal to establish an efficient processing route for the production of small biodegradable parts for the medical domain. It has been observed that for the same milling parameters, the composition of the powders has influenced the powder size and shape. On the other hand, for the same composition, the highest experimented milling speed and time conduct to finer powder particles, almost round-shaped, without pores or various inclusions. The most uniform size has been obtained for the powder sample with 10 wt.%Zn. These powders were finally processed by selective laser melting, an additive manufacturing technology, to obtain a homogeneous experimental sample, without cracking, for future more systematical trials.

Abstract: A large area cross section of the production of spherical metal powders by gas atomization in the manufacturing method. Powder metal characteristic improves with small powder size. This aim was realized by vertical gas atomization unit, a new a closely-matched nozzle system and manufacture. In the experimental studies, pure aluminium powders which has an important place in the automotive, air and defence industries were produced. In the studies carried out with the Vertical Gas Atomization unit, aluminium was superheated up to 900°C and atomized at different gas pressures (20-30 bar). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and particle size measuring device were used for the characterization and size measurements of the produced powders, respectively. The average particle size of the finest powder produced with increasing atomization pressure was determined as d50=19.50µm. Aluminium powder shape and morphology was used as spherical and very little satellization was seen. Keywords: Powder Metallurgy, Atomisation, Nozzle, Al powder, Characterisation

Reduced activation ferritic (RAF) steels are expected to be widely used in challenging nuclear industrial applications under severe thermo-mechanical regimes and intense neutron loads. Therefore, actual research panorama is facing the strengthening strategies necessary to maximize both performance and endurance under these conditions. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) RAF steels are leader candidates as structural materials in fusion energy reactors thanks to the reinforcement obtained with a fine dispersion of nanosized oxides in their matrix. In this study, the influence of the initial powder particle size and the selected processing route on the final material has been investigated. Two RAF ODS steels coming from atomized pre-alloyed powders with nominal particle powder sizes of 70 and 30 µm and composition Fe-14Cr-2W-0.4Ti-0.3Y2O3 (wt. %) were manufactured by mechanical alloying. Alloyed powders were compacted by hot isostatic pressing, hot crossed rolled, and annealed at 1273 K. Initial powder particle size differences minimize after milling. Both steels present an almost completely recrystallized material and similar grain sizes. The same type and distributions of secondary phases, Cr-W-rich, Ti-rich, and Y-Ti oxide nanoparticles, have been also characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in both alloy samples. The strengthening effect has been confirmed by tensile and Charpy impact tests. The two alloys present similar strength values with slightly better ductile brittle transition temperature (DBTT) and ductility for the steel produced with the smaller powder size.

This paper investigates the spreadability of the spherical CoCrWMo powder for laser- powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) by using image processing algorithms coded in MATLAB. Besides, it also aims to examine the spreadability dependence with the other characteristics such as powder size distribution, apparent density, angle of repose. Powder blends in four different particle size distributions are prepared, characterized, and spreadability tests are performed with the PBF-LB. The results demonstrate that an increase in fine particle ratio by volume (below 10 µm) enhances the agglomeration and decreases the flowability, causing poor spreadability. These irregularities on the spread layers are quantified with simple illumination invariant analysis. A clear relation between powder spreadability and 3D printed structures properties in terms of residual porosity could not be defined since structural defects in 3D printed parts also depends on other processing parameters such as spatter formation or powder size over layer height ratio.

Developing inexpensive and rapid fabrication methods for high efficiency thermoelectric alloys is a crucial challenge for the thermoelectric industry, especially for energy conversion applications. Here, we fabricated large amounts of p-type Cu0.07Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 alloys, using water atomization to control its microstructure and improve thermoelectric performance by optimizing its initial powder size. All the water atomized powders were sieved with different aperture sizes, of 32–75 μm, 75–125 μm, 125–200 μm, and <200 μm, and subsequently consolidated using hot pressing at 490 °C. The grain sizes were found to increase with increasing powder particle size, which also increased carrier mobility due to improved carrier transport. The maximum electrical conductivity of 1457.33 Ω−1 cm−1 was obtained for the 125–200 μm samples due to their large grain sizes and subsequent high mobility. The Seebeck coefficient slightly increased with decreasing particle size due to scattering of carriers at fine grain boundaries. The higher power factor values of 4.20, 4.22 × 10−3 W/mk2 were, respectively, obtained for large powder specimens, such as 125–200 μm and 75–125 μm, due to their higher electrical conductivity. In addition, thermal conductivity increased with increasing particle size due to the improvement in carriers and phonons transport. The 75–125 μm powder specimen exhibited a relatively high thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT of 1.257 due to this higher electric conductivity.

The aim in this investigation is focused on the evaluation of two distinctive powder size ratios of pure elements (Al, Si and Cu) powders. Heat treatments (T4 and T6) affecting the mechanical strengths of Al/Si/Cu composites are also investigated. The novelty concerns to pure elements to constituting the composites and no melting or stir casting route are used. It is found that the densifications and tensile strengths are similar when distinct powder size ratios are used. It is also found that T4 and T6 treatments increases and decreases the mechanical strengths, respectively. The Si content indicates a deleterious effect in mechanical behavior. The T6 aging provides θ-Al2Cu incoherent with Al matrix, and the compressive strength is decreased. This suggests that the examined Al/Cu composites (using pure powders) are potential materials considering economical and environmentally friendly aspects.

A path to lowering the economic barrier associated with the high cost of metal additively manufactured components is to reduce the waste via powder reuse (powder cycled back into the process) and recycling (powder chemically, physically, or thermally processed to recover the original properties) strategies. In electron beam powder bed fusion, there is a possibility of reusing 95–98% of the powder that is not melted. However, there is a lack of systematic studies focusing on quantifying the variation of powder properties induced by number of reuse cycles. This work compares the influence of multiple reuse cycles, as well as powder blends created from reused powder, on various powder characteristics such as the morphology, size distribution, flow properties, packing properties, and chemical composition (oxygen and nitrogen content). It was found that there is an increase in measured response in powder size distribution, tapped density, Hausner ratio, Carr index, basic flow energy, specific energy, dynamic angle of repose, oxygen, and nitrogen content, while the bulk density remained largely unchanged.
