AbstractSingle-crystalline needle-shaped CdO nanostructures were synthesized using a chemical vapor deposition method and characterized using a variety of techniques. Devices consisting of individual CdO nanoneedles were fabricated and high conductance as well as high carrier concentrations was observed. The temperature dependence of the conductance revealed thermal excitation as the dominating transport mechanism. Our devices exhibited good sensitivity to both infrared light and diluted NO2 gas, indicating potential applications as infrared photo-detectors and toxic gas sensors.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are always produced under a reductive ambient with hydrogen present using the chemical vapor deposition method. Oxidative media, such as carbon dioxide and oxygen, could damage the tubular structures by opening the nanotube ends or etching the tube walls. Here we report the synthesis of aligned defective, but clean, CNTs in the presence of water vapor. The tube walls were found broken as well as the tube ends. CNTs with a large amount of exposed broken sites on their tube walls have potential applications in many areas such as energy storage.

The quantum dot is a kind of nanoparticle whose dimension is smaller than the size of a typical nanoparticle ranging from tens of nanometers to a few hundredths of nanometers. The quantum mechanical behavior associated with the quantum dot displays different optical and electronic properties, enabling the quantum dot to find potential applications in a multitude of areas such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, and biomedical applications. The objective of this investigation is to explore its fundamentals, synthesis, and applications, especially in the healthcare domain. We have discussed the quantum dot synthesis techniques using chemical methods, namely, wet-chemical methods and vapor-phase methods and plasma processing methods, namely, an ion sputtering method and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. We have thoroughly investigated the application of quantum dots in imaging, diagnostics, and gene therapy areas. A significant outcome of this review is to propose quantum dots as a new modality in the treatment of cancer and gene therapeutics in the healthcare domain and the potentials of artificial intelligence to improve their performance via the applications of neural networks.

AbstractNovel organic, polymeric materials and processes of depositing thin films on electronics substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) have been developed and the lithographic behavior of photoresist coated over these CVD films at deep ultraviolet (DUV) wavelength has been evaluated. The specific monomers synthesized for DUV applications include [2.2](1,4)- naphthalenophane, [2.2](9,10)-anthracenophane and their derivatives which showed remarkable film uniformity on flat wafers and conformality over structured topography wafers, upon polymerization by CVD. The chemical, physical and optical properties of the deposited films have been characterized by measuring parameters such as thickness uniformity, solubility, conformality, adhesion to semiconductor substrates, ultraviolet-visible spectra, optical density, optical constants, defectivity, and resist compatibility. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photos of cross-sectioned patterned wafers showed verticle profiles with no footing, standing waves or undercut. Resist profiles down to 0.10 νm dense lines and 0.09 νm isolated lines were achieved in initial tests. CVD coatings generated 96-100% conformal films, which is a substantial improvement over commercial spin-on polymeric systems. The light absorbing layers have high optical density at 248 nm and are therefore capable materials for DUV lithography applications. CVD is a potentially useful technology to extend lithography for sub-0.15 νm devices. These films have potential applications in microelectronics, optoelectronics and photonics.

AbstractAn ion-assisted chemical vapor deposition method by which Cu is deposited preferentially from the bottom of trenches (anisotropic CVD) has been proposed in order to fill small via holes and trenches. By using Ar + H2 + C2H5OH[Cu(hfac)2] discharges with a ratio H2 / (H2 + Ar) = 83%, Cu is filled preferentially from the bottom of trenches without deposition on the sidewall and top surfaces. The deposition rate on the bottom surface of trenches is experimentally found to increase with decreasing its width.

The substrate plays a key role in chemoresistive gas sensors. It acts as mechanical support for the sensing material, hosts the heating element and, also, aids the sensing material in signal transduction. In recent years, a significant improvement in the substrate production process has been achieved, thanks to the advances in micro- and nanofabrication for micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technologies. In addition, the use of innovative materials and smaller low-power consumption silicon microheaters led to the development of high-performance gas sensors. Various heater layouts were investigated to optimize the temperature distribution on the membrane, and a suspended membrane configuration was exploited to avoid heat loss by conduction through the silicon bulk. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies focused on predictive models for the optimization of the thermal and mechanical properties of a microheater. In this work, three microheater layouts in three membrane sizes were developed using the microfabrication process. The performance of these devices was evaluated to predict their thermal and mechanical behaviors by using both experimental and theoretical approaches. Finally, a statistical method was employed to cross-correlate the thermal predictive model and the mechanical failure analysis, aiming at microheater design optimization for gas-sensing applications.

AbstractGrowth of high-quality III–V nanowires at a low cost for optoelectronic and electronic applications is a long-term pursuit of research. Still, controlled synthesis of III–V nanowires using chemical vapor deposition method is challenge and lack theory guidance. Here, we show the growth of InP and GaP nanowires in a large area with a high density using a vacuum chemical vapor deposition method. It is revealed that high growth temperature is required to avoid oxide formation and increase the crystal purity of InP nanowires. Introduction of a small amount of Ga into the reactor leads to the formation of GaP nanowires instead of ternary InGaP nanowires. Thermodynamic calculation within the calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) approach is applied to explain this novel growth phenomenon. Composition and driving force calculations of the solidification process demonstrate that only 1 at.% of Ga in the catalyst is enough to tune the nanowire formation from InP to GaP, since GaP nucleation shows a much larger driving force. The combined thermodynamic studies together with III–V nanowire growth studies provide an excellent example to guide the nanowire growth.
