Leonid Raab was one of Hollywood’s most prolific orchestrators of Golden Age film music. However,   his profile is absent from standard reference works on the cinema. Raab’s career is examined using contempora- neous sources including a journal in Russian belonging to his friend Boris Artzybasheff, translated here for the   first time. Emphasis is given to Raab’s alliances with fellow émigré studio musicians, artists, and expats in thewider community in Hollywood. Born in Tiraspol, Russia, Raab started his career in New York City as a copyist and arranger with the music publishers T.B. Harms, working under Robert Russell Bennett on musicals such as Show Boat (1927). He moved from Broadway to RKO Radio Pictures in 1929 and, following the Great Depression, was employed by MGM orchestrating Herbert Stothart’s scores for The Merry Widow, David Copperfield, and A Tale of Two Cities. From 1936 to 1967, Raab collaborated mainly with the composer Franz Waxman, orchestrating some 100 scores, including Rebecca, Edge of Darkness, Objective Burma, Sunset Boulevard, A Place in the Sun, and Taras Bulba. A comprehensive filmography (~400 scores) is presented, together with some rare family memorabilia and, among other things, an orchestral score which Raab arranged of the song “Glory to God” composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

The first of two companion chapters, this essay focuses especially on the historical meeting of European and African American movement vocabularies in English-speaking early-nineteenth-century contexts. It focuses particularly upon public music and dance in two creolized cities: Kingston, Jamaica, and New York City. Primary source evidence includes period illustrations (most notably, a ca. 1802 watercolor entitled A Grand Jamaica Ball) and period accounts of entertainments at lower Manhattan’s African Grove Theater; both are analyzed for the evidence they provide regarding the synthesis of creolized movement vocabularies and, by extension, cultural experiences. Methodology is drawn especially from iconography and kinesics.

Nathanael West was an author and screenwriter whose work spanned the decade of the 1930s. He was born Nathan Weinstein on 17 October 1903 in New York City; his decision to change his name at the age of twenty-two reflects a life-long ambivalence toward his Jewish ancestry. He is best known as a novelist whose work teems with characters suffering from psychological traumas stemming from the bleak atmosphere of Depression-era America. He died tragically and in relative obscurity with his wife Eileen in an automobile accident outside of El Centro, California in 1940. Miss Lonelyhearts (1933), his second novel, is widely considered his best work. Unlike his first novel, The Dream Life of Balso Snell (1931) — which was influenced by French surrealism and was highly experimental in style — Miss Lonelyhearts is rooted in the everyday challenges of the Great Depression. The title character, whose actual name is never given, works as an advice columnist for a newspaper in New York City. Although he and others see the job as trivial, the desperate letters from readers begin to take a heavy emotional toll, leading him on an ill-fated search for meaning. Although the book’s plot is tragic, it also features elements of black comedy, a pervasive element of West’s work.

8063 Background: Information on central nervous system (CNS) involvement with NA-ATLL is limited. In this study, we describe CNS involvement in ATLL patients at a tertiary hospital in New York City. Methods: We considered CNS involvement if one of the following criteria was met 1) cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology or flow cytometry was positive 2) CNS imaging was positive for disease involvement or 3) Physical exam findings were compatible with neurologic involvement. Results: Of 94 NA-ATLL patients, 21 (22.3%) had CNS involvement by ATLL. CSF was involved in 13/21 and 5/21 patients at diagnosis and relapse respectively. At diagnosis, MRI showed CNS involvement in brain and spine in 5/21 (24%) and 3/ 21 (14%) cases respectively. At relapse, imaging revealed brain and spine involvement in 2 patients each. Neurological exam was abnormal in 7 (33%) and 3 (14%) cases at diagnosis and relapse respectively. Next generation exon targeted sequencing was performed in 9 cases. Table shows the mutations (mtn) and functional groups with frequencies. XPO1 E571K mutation was present in 2 patients with extensive CNS disease and refractory to conventional treatment with an overall survival (OS) of 2 months. To our knowledge, this is the first time that XPO1 E571K is reported in a T-Cell malignancy. We also describe here a second set of mutations with CNS involvement (KLF2 and PI3KCD) in 2 patients. Median OS was 8.5 months, Median RFS was 6.5 months in our series. In most cases, the lymphomatous phenotype appeared to have direct mass-like extension (5/21) with several cases of accompanying osteolytic spine or skull lesions, whereas cases with hematogenous involvement tends to spread to the CSF by traversing the brain blood barrier. Conclusions: In this report we describe patterns of CNS involvement in ATLL and the associated mtns. We also describe two unique cases of XPO1E571K mtn in a TCL. [Table: see text]

On May 4, 2003, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's New York City Transit subsidiary (NYCT) raised its subway and bus fares for the first time since discounted and unlimited-ride MetroCards (electronic fare cards) were introduced between July 1997 and January 1999. Before the 2003 fare increase, the agency did not have any experience with either the direct ridership effects of price changes for unlimited-ride passes or the shift of customers when prices of different fare media increased at different rates and customers could shift from one fare medium to another. Partly on the basis of work done by other transit agencies, NYCT developed a spreadsheet model that used direct fare elasticities to estimate absolute ridership loss and used trip diversion rates (similar to cross-elasticities) to estimate the likelihood that passengers would shift from a fare instrument with a larger percentage increase to one with a smaller increase. The actual shift of customers between fare instruments after the fare increase was greater than projected, with the result of a lower than expected systemwide average fare. The negative revenue impact from the lower average fare was mostly offset by a lower than expected ridership decline. The estimated fare elasticities were below the average of historical NYCT fare elasticities and suggest that customers using unlimited-ride passes were less sensitive to fare changes.

Jump Up! Caribbean Carnival Music in New York City is the first comprehensive history of Trinidadian calypso and steelband music in the diaspora. Carnival, transplanted from Trinidad to Harlem in the 1930s and to Brooklyn in the late 1960s, provides the cultural context for the study. Blending urban studies, oral history, archival research, and ethnography, Jump Up! examines how members of New York’s diverse Anglophile-Caribbean communities forged transnational identities through the self-conscious embrace, transformation, and hybridization of select Carnival music styles and performances. The work fills a significant void in our understanding of how Caribbean Carnival music—specifically calypso, soca (soul/calypso), and steelband—evolved in the second half of the twentieth century as it flowed between its island homeland and its burgeoning New York migrant community. Jump Up! addresses the issues of music, migration, and identity head on, exploring for the first time the complex cycling of musical practices and the back-and-forth movement of singers, musicians, arrangers, producers, and cultural entrepreneurs between New York’s diasporic communities and the Caribbean.

The core of this book, offering qualitative and quantitative assessments of the migratory, breeding, wintering, and resident avifauna of the Northwest Bronx, New York City back to 1872. The present and historical statuses of 301 study area species and another 70 potential species are described in detail for the Bronx, for New York City, for Long Island, and for Westchester and Rockland Cos. for the first time since 1964. Study area winter population changes are amplified by comparison to their numbers on 90 annual Bronx-Westchester Christmas Bird Counts from 1924. Extended discussion of pertinent identification, ecological, taxonomic, and distributional issues complements the quantitative distribution and occurrence data and update all 371 species to 2016.
