The article discusses the features of the development of the largest Rostov agglomeration in the south of the country in order to form a single territorial, economic and social space. The authors analyze the conditions for agglomeration development and identify the necessary steps for the sustainable development of the cities that are part of the agglomeration, which would correspond to the interests of the population, business and local authorities. Within the framework of the article, the agglomeration effect on the territory of the agglomeration is revealed and the most urgent issues that have to be faced in the process of its formation are identified. To do this, the following methods were used in the article: systematization, forecasting, analysis, mathematical modeling and evaluation of the degree of agglomeration effect of various urban agglomerations with their comparison. The article provides a brief analysis of the largest cities that are part of the agglomeration, with an assessment of their specialization and influence on the development of the surrounding area. The main variables are statistical data on the population, the investment attractiveness of the territory and the volume of goods produced by the company. Special attention is paid to satellite cities, which are most influenced by the core city. The research conducted in the article allowed us to show that Bataysk and Aksay (the project “Big Rostov”) developing in a single cluster with Rostov are able to achieve many competitive advantages, both for the entire territory and for each specific municipality. Based on the interaction of these cities, a synergistic effect is shown, which is characterized by an active pendulum migration, development of communications and construction, concentration of production and specialization of the economy of the municipalities that are part of the agglomeration.

Spatial as a contributor to biological productivity and ecosystem services have not been considered in the sustainable development of small islands. The aim of this study to appraise biocapacity (BC) in the Gili Matra Islands to estimate the existing carrying capacity for sustainable development, and refines the current BC methodology that emphasizes the spatial aspects in small islands. Based on analysis results, the Gili Matra Islands have BC total ranging from 659.46 to 1,069.57 gha in 2010, and increased from 673.64 to 1,093.02 gha in 2014. The highest total BC is the Gili Trawangan Island, while the lowest is the Gili Meno Island, but for the local BC is the opposite. The total local BC per island can be supplied around 0.00857 gha per capita for the Gili Ayer Island, 0.20103 gha per capita for the Gili Meno Island, and 0.00344 gha per capita for the Gili Trawangan Island. They are influenced by population density. The BC values indicate a critical position, both per-unit-area or per-capita, which is spatially nearly 100 % of the needs supplied from outside the island, and demonstrate the use on the Gili Matra Region have exceeded the existing carrying capacity. The sustainable development aspects and land use management should be applied strictly to ensure the sustainability of natural resources, social and economic, as well as cotinuously consider the efforts and existing strategies of conservation. The export and import factors of bioproductivity should be considered in making long-term planning. Spatially, BC appraisal was applicable to illustrate the condition of an area on the small islands. The GIS based BC can give the information of pattern of changes and distributions, both spatial and temporal. However, the statistical data use is needed to get the value of BC per capita.

The general issues of competitiveness of transnational corporations have been considered. Research of the problem of competitiveness of Russian transnational corporations on the world market and the formation of their competitive advantages for sustainable development in a globalized economy has been сonducted. The author’s interpretation of the concept of “enterprise competitiveness” has been proposed. In a global liberalized economy, transnational corporations have the opportunity to influence geopolitical issues in international trade and employment, as well as dictate their own rules. The constant increase in the level of competitiveness of a small group of transnational corporations has been noted in the article, the format of competition in industry and regional markets is often oligopolistic. Building a true global strategy for the development of transnational corporations and obtaining a competitive advantage by them is impossible without sufficient knowledge of current trends in globalization: globalization of the market, globalization of costs, globalization of competition, globalization of government policies. The methods of obtaining competitive advantages of transnational corporations have been adduced and сharacterized. For Russian transnational corporations, the issue of their competitiveness is very acute in the markets of rapidly turning goods or in the markets of new technologies. Factors, hindering the growth of the competitiveness of Russian corporations: incorrect corporate policies, leading to inefficiency of personnel motivation, corporate culture, inconsistency with international standards, incorrect alignment of the global strategy, lack of reciprocity principles and correct negotiation. This creates a negative image of the company, which affects its position, and subsequently its competitiveness. Competitiveness is one of the most important factors for ensuring the sustainable development of the economy of Russian corporations. The criteria for assessing sustainability, the corporations should meet have been suggested.
