Twenty popular rice varieties developed by ANGRAU obtained from Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Maruteru during Kharif – 2019, were screened for chemical quality traits viz., gel consistency, gelatinization temperature, amylose along with glycemic index.In our study, significant variation was observed among all the varieties for chemical traits but no significant variation was observed in case of glycemic index.The amylose content observed over the varieties ranged from 21.7 per cent to 24.73 per cent. All the varieties have intermediate amylose content. Gel consistency ranged from 37.67 (hard gel) to 75 (soft gel) with the mean of 52.57. The alkali spreading value was noticed to be low, intermediate and high among all rice varieties.Glycemic index rangedfrom 56.72 -66.43 with a general mean of 60.67. Furthermore, all the varieties were categorized as medium GI varieties (56-69). Among all the varieties, Pushyami has shown the least value (56.72) for glycemic index.From the present investigation, it is concluded that, Rice varieties such as Chandra, Indra, Sri Dhruthi, Swarna, Samba Mahsuri, Sujatha, Maruteru Samba, MaruteruMahsuri recorded intermediate amylose, alkali spreading value and medium GI, which are desirable for rice consumers while counting for better rice with the best quality and glycemic index.

Rice nutrition including vitamin and amylose contents become important aspect for many people around the world. Rice with high amylose content (low glycemic index) is good for those with Diabetes mellitus. Tocotrienol, one precursor of Vitamin-E biosynthesis is catalyzed by enzymes encoded HGGT, while amylose biosynthesis is catalyzed by enzymes encoded GBSSI. The objective of this study was to find rice varieties with high tocotrienol and/or amylose content based on the expression of HGGT and GBSSI among eight Banyuwangi local rice varieties. Relative expression of HGGT and GBSSI was measured by qRT-PCR and analyzed using 2ΔCt method. Statistical analysis resulted in the significantly different of HGGT and GBSSI relative expression among samples. Relative expression of HGGT from the highest to the lowest were demonstrated by Hitam Melik, Hitam Pekat, Blambangan A3, Merah Bali, Blambangan A2, Berlian, Janur Kuning, and SOJ A3, respectively; while relative expression of GBSSI from the highest to the lowest were demonstrated by Hitam Melik, Hitam Pekat, SOJ A3, Janur Kuning, Berlian, Merah Bali, Blambangan A3, and Blambangan A2, respectively. Based on this research we conclude that Hitam Melik potentially produces higher tocotrienol and lower glycemic index than other studied varieties.

The main meteorological indicators affecting the eating quality of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the lower reaches of Huai river were studied and the optimal sowing time range for obtaining good eating quality was put forward. Compared with solar radiation, rainfall, and humidity, temperature is the primary meteorological factor affecting the eating quality of rice in the lower reaches of the Huai river. Sowing the rice on different dates altered the heading and maturity dates of rice, and the difference between the mean daily temperature (Tmean) from the heading to maturity stage reached 4.6–5.0 °C. The Tmean from heading to maturity for all treatments was less than 23.5 °C. When the temperature was lower than 20.2 °C during the grain filling period, the value of the comprehensive evaluation of eating quality (CEQ) of the three types of rice decreased significantly. The medium-maturing japonica soft rice varieties (SMR), late-maturing japonica soft rice varieties (SLR), and late-maturing japonica non-soft rice varieties (LR) varieties that were subjected to low temperatures had a higher amylose content and protein content. Overall, the eating quality of rice in the lower reaches of the Huai river was affected by the low Tmean after the heading stage. The mean daily temperature (Tmean) range from the heading to maturity stages of SMR, SLR, and LR varieties that produced relatively high CEQ were 20.2–23.3 °C, 20.2–22.1 °C, and 20.3–22.1 °C, respectively. The optimal sowing date ranges of SMR, SLR, and LR were May 16 to June 1, May 16 to May 18, and May 16 to May 20, respectively.

The management of amylose and protein contents and cooking quality are the main challenges in rice macronutrients and quality improvement. This experiment was conducted to examine the rice grain quality, alkali digestion, and gel consistency responses to irrigation interval after anthesis. Three rice varieties (K1, K3, and K4) were subjected to different irrigation intervals (1, 2, and 3 d) after anthesis. The findings of this study showed that the protein content was markedly increased from 6.53–6.63% to 9.93–10.16%, whilst the amylose content was decreased significantly from 22.00–22.43% to 16.33–17.56% under stressed treatments at irrigation intervals, whilst the quantity of fatty acids was not affected. The 3-d irrigation interval recorded the highest protein content but the lowest amylose value. In addition, this treatment shows lower gelatinization temperature, but it is negatively associated with hard gel consistency under irrigation interval. This study highlights that the water management following a 3-d irrigation interval from anthesis is a useful and simple treatment to improve rice nutrients and grain cooking quality.

Rice consumed as white cooked polished grain has been considered a high glycemic index (GI) food, particularly compared with other starchy foods. However, the GI levels of rice based food can vary among different rice types and food processing technologies. Rice GI variation can be affected by several factors, such as rice variety, the genetic background of rice as well as due to crop edaphoclimatic conditions. The main difference in rice starch composition that influences GI is the amylose content. Besides the chemical composition of rice, the gelatinization characteristics and food processing can also contribute to starch retrogradation, thus increasing the level of resistant starch with a great influence on GI. To understand the glycemic response of rice types differing in amylose and viscosity profiles, four rice samples were analyzed and compared with standard and resistant HI-MAIZE corn starches. An in vitro enzymatic starch hydrolysis procedure was applied to estimate GI. The results indicate substantial differences in the starch hydrolysis of the two corn starches. Starch hydrolysis tended to be more rapid and efficient for ‘Waxy’ and ‘Ceres’ (intermediate-amylose) rice types than for ‘Maçarico’ (high-amylose rice). In addition, the data show that the Maçarico variety has the lowest estimated GI and the highest retrogradation rate compared with ‘Waxy’, ‘Ceres’ and ‘Basmati’ type. The results obtained reinforce the importance of knowing amylose content and viscosity profiles for the prediction of rice glycemic responses.

CMS (cytoplasmic male sterile) line is one of the most important hybrid parents in hybrid rice production technology using Three-Line systems. Test-crosses for selection of candidate local maintainer lines were conducted using 24 rice varieties and two CMS-WA (wild abortive) lines IR78374A/B and 1A/B. The F1 of the two combinations, namely IR78374A/P519 and 1A/MR243 had less than 10% spikelet fertility (6.4 and 7.2%, respectively), indicated that P519 and MR243 are partially maintainers and could be used for the development of new locally adapted CMS lines. As a results, two CMS lines, namely 0025A/B and 0047A/B were generated after 5 to 6 successive backcrossing of IR78374A with P519 and 1A with MR243. The CMS 0025A/B and 0047A/B lines had maturation age which is comparable to other commonly grown inbred varieties. The percentage of stigma exertion rate for CMS 0025A/B and 0047A/B were 17.9 and 21.3%, respectively, lower than that of IR78374A/B (43.2%). Both showed poor out-crossing rate. CMS 0025A/B and 0047A/B are classified as long and slender grain. They had intermediate amylose content. Their gel consistency was hard, comparable to that of MR263 (medium).  CMS 0025A/B and 0047A/B lines were also moderately resistant to foliar blast disease and brown planthopper infestation.

A field experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Parwanipur in 1998/99 and 1999/00 with an aim to find out the alternate management practices to compensate the loss in the grain yield due to flood. Irrespective of the varieties and transplanting dates, age of seedlings had no effect on grain yield of rice. But transplanting dates had significant effect on grain and grain contributing characters. The yield of rice transplanted at 1 Sept was 25.6 and 37.5% less in 1998/99 and 1999/00 respectively as compared to rice grain yield of 14 July transplanting. Radha 11 registered the highest grain yield of 4086 kg ha-1 in 1999/00 and 2662 kg ha-1 in 1998/99, which was at par to the yield obtained by Sabitri at the same year. The interaction effect of the age of seedlings, transplanting dates and varieties were found significant in both the years. 25 days old seedlings transplanted on 14 July in 1999/00 of rice varieties Masuli and Radha 11, produced statistically the similar yield. Gelatinisation temperature (GT) is one of the key traits measured in programs for breeding rice (Oryza sativa L.). It is commonly estimated by the alkali spreading value (ASV), and less commonly by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Using a diverse set of germplasm, it was determined that DSC values associate poorly with ASV, are not correlated with amylose content but correlate with cooking time. Rice varieties are traditionally grouped into three classes of GT based on ASV: high, intermediate and low. However, the distribution of DSC values of 4000 samples shows only two classes: high and low. Large differences in the distributions of chain lengths synthesised by starch synthase IIa (SSIIa) support the two classes as the major grouping, two haplotypes associating with each peak. Each peak of DSC values spanned 10°C. The chain length distribution of the amylopectin molecules from varieties at the upper boundary of each peak showed significantly more chains that span both the crystalline and amorphous lamellae of a cluster than varieties at the other end of that distribution. Improved varieties, classified as intermediate GT by ASV, belong to both of the classes defined by DSC, implying that some enzyme, other than SSIIa is involved in intermediate GT.

In eastern India, more than 13.0 million ha of rice lands are affected by excess water and periodically suffer from flash floods and complete submergence. Most of the traditional and adapted rice varieties of this situation are low yielders. To overcome these problems the high yielding rice variety (HYV), Rajdeep (IET 17713) has been developed by Rice Research Station, Government of West Bengal, Chinsurah, Hooghly as high yielding rice variety for semideep water situation. Field experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of promising semideep water rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes under lowland situation during wet season of 2002-2013. Performance of Rajdeep, semideep water rice was better and therefore it was released. It is tolerant to sheath blight, sheath rot diseases and stem borer, leaf folder insect-pests. The high yielding semideep rice variety, Rajdeep exhibited superiority over national check (Sabita), regional check (Purnendu) and local check tested in different locations under All India Coordinated Rice Improvement Project (AICRIP) trials during kharif, 2002-2003 conducted by ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabed, India. This variety was also tested in multi-locational yield trials (2003-2013) along with check variety Swarna-Sub 1/ Bhudeb at different locations of West Bengal. After testing at national level as well as at state level, based on yield performance of the variety, the HYV semideep rice variety Rajdeep was released and notified by Government of India in the Gazette of India vide Notification No. S.O. 1007(E) on 30th March, 2017.

In Southern India, drought stress is a major constraint to chickpea production and yield stability. Drought tolerant index (DTI) that provides a measure of drought based on yield loss under drought condition in comparison to normal condition was used for screening drought-tolerant genotypes. This study was conducted to determine drought tolerant genotypes with high yield in stress and non-stress conditions utilising physiological traits. Thirty chickpea genotypes were tested in a randomized complete block design with three replications under rain fed and irrigated conditions at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, India during rabi, 2018-2019. The analysis of variance carried out for yield and drought tolerant traits revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes for all characters under rain fed as well as irrigated conditions. NBeG 776, NBeG 779, NBeG 868, ICCV 181606, MH 13 and MH 14 are drought tolerant. NBeG 776, NBeG 779 and NBeG 868 are suitable under both rain fed and irrigated conditions with significantly higher yields over their respective means. ICCV 181606, MH 13 and MH 14 are suitable exclusively for rain fed condition with significantly superior yields over the mean.

Thirteen traditional upland rice varieties (Kadidit Pilit, Red 64, Masipag 9, Masipag 15, Dinorado, Mindoro, Camuros, Masipag 22, Palawan, Suleg, Biday, Pilit , Pilit Talacdan) were evaluated in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in three replicates at the experimental area of Central Philippines State University (CPSU), Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental from November 2012 - April 2013. The parameters compared were their agronomic data on growth and yield, including grain characteristics. These data were processed using the one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with the Statistical Tool for Agricultural Research (STAR) (Version 2.0.1) while Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) were used to compare significant treatment means at 1% level. The upland rice varieties showed significant variation in growth, yield showed distinct grain characteristics. Biday variety was the tallest, produced longer and wider leaves, and bore the longest panicle. Mindoro and Masipag 22 produced the most number of tillers. Pilit talacdan had the biggest culm, produced the heaviest panicle, with the highest number of filled grains per panicle. Pilit variety gave the heaviest weight of 1,000 grains. The grain features were also found to be distinct in each variety. The yield significantly varied among the upland rice varieties. Pilit and Pilit Talacdan gave the highest yield among the varieties grown at CPSU condition. The performing varieties would be used for upland rice improvement and breeding program and for further verification in the farmer’s field.
