A rose hip is the fruit of a rose plant and mostly belongs to Rosa canina and Rosa dumalis. These species are genuine found as wild in natural conditions, while in some countries are cultivated for their hips that are picked and used in a wide variety of preparations. Because they contain a variety of antioxidants, carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, leucoanthocyanins and catechins, rose hips are considered to be a good cancer preventative. The Rosa genus has been the focus of many recent studies due to its potential benefic effects on treatment and prevention of several diseases. However, there are few in vitro studies concerning its composition and antioxidant capacity. The aim of the present study was to determine bioactive content, including ascorbic acid, total phenolics, total flavonoids, total carotenoids and antioxidant activity of Rosa dumalis genotypes growing wild in Erzurum province located eastern Anatolia. The results revealed that fruits of Rosa dumalis different genotypes were rich rich in terms of vitamin C, which ranged from 402 to 511 mg/100 g fresh weight base. The total phenolic content varied from 297 to 403 mg/100 g fresh weight. The genotype 'E-09' had the highest total flavonoids content (229 mg quercetin equivalent/100 g fresh weight) and the lowest value was attributed to genotype 'E-04' with 143 mg/ quercetin equivalent/100 g fresh weight. The antioxidant activity of the genotypes was between 12.9-28.6 μg Trolox/ml samples. The results revealed that there was enough diversity among Rosa dumalis genotypes for bioactive content and promising genotypes, with high bioactive content, were determined, which can become study material for future breeding activities.

AbstractWe conducted this study to determine and compare the content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids in the argan and olive leaves as well as their antioxidant capacity in aqueous, methanolic, and ethyl acetate extracted fractions. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated in comparison with synthetic antioxidants by assessing DPPH• radical scavenging capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, scavenging ability by inhibiting the β-carotene/linoleic acid emulsion oxidation, and by the ABTS radical scavenging activity assay. Total phenolic content in argan samples ranged from 221.69 ± 2.07 to 1.32 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g DW and in olive samples from 144.61 ± 0.82 to 1.21 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g DW. Total flavonoids content in argan samples varied from 267.37 ± 1.12 to 25.48 ± 0.02 mg QE/g DW, while in olives from 96.06 ± 0.78 to 10.63 ± 0.05 mg QE/g DW. In vitro antioxidant studies strongly confirmed the antioxidant potency of argan and olive leaves and their richness in secondary metabolites that are effective in free radicals scavenging and metal chelating capacities, indicating their antioxidant power.

The present work was conducted in order to investigate the effect of auxin type (2,4-D and NAA) and concentration (0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00 mg/l) on Balanites aegyptiaca callus cultures growth and production of secondary metabolites. Obtained results demonstrated that supplementation MS medium with 2,4-D at 2.0 mg/l could enhanced and recorded the ultimate values of callus fresh weight, antioxidant activity (%), total flavonoids, total phenolic compounds and total saponins contents and yields of Balanites aegyptiaca L. callus.

The bioactive compounds, as well as the in vitro antioxidant activity of two Savoy cabbage cultivars, Dama and Leticia, grown in west of Spain under similar conditions were identified, quantified and compared. We found that cv. Dama presented in general betters results when compared with cv. Leticia. Cv. Dama presented higher concentrations of chlorophyll a (2.26 mg/100 g fresh weight), total phenolic content (102.71 mg of chlorogenic acid equivalent/100 g fresh weight) and total intact glucosinolates (195.22 µmol of sinigrin equivalent/100 g fresh weight). Thus, cv. Dama exhibited higher values of in vitro antioxidant activity.

Fruits of two jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) cultivars were collected at four stages of ripening and analyzed in terms of chemical compounds. The cultivars were grown under the climatic conditions of the Sub-Carpathian area Ramnicu-Valcea in Romania (45°6′17″N, 24°22′32″E). Total phenols content, total flavonoids content, organic acids from jujube fruits and related antioxidant activities were investigated during the ripening stages. The antioxidant activity of alcoholic extracts was investigated by the 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method. Total phenolic content was determined by using the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, while determination of flavonoids was done by aluminium nitrate colorimetric method, and organic acids were separated by reversed phase chromatography. The results obtained have indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) found in bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity, depending on cultivars and ripening stage. Total phenolic content ranged from 1634.44 to 472.38 mg GAE/100 g in methanolic extracts of the two varieties studied, while total flavonoids content ranged from 19.9 to 48.5 mg QE/100 g. As regards the influence of ripening stage, the results show that the highest antioxidant activity was recorded in the stage of white maturity. The impact of maturity stage was significant on organic acid distribution of jujube extracts, and ascorbic acid is the major organic acid found in jujube fruits, followed by malic acid and lactic acid. Jujube fruits are rich in bioactive compounds and can be a complement in human’s healthy eating.

Background Salvia eigii., Salvia hierosolymitana and Salvia viridis are native to the Mediterranean region, and are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of many ailments. In the current investigation, the methanolic extracts obtained from the air dried aerial parts of S. eigii, S. hierosolymitana and S. viridis from Jordan were screened for their total phenolics content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC) and their in vitro antioxidant activity. Additionally, the presence of four bioactive phenolic acids including gallic acid, caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid and salvianolic acid B and other seven flavonoids including luteolin-7-O-glucoside, apigenin, apigenin-7-O-glucoside, rutin, nariginin, hesperidin and quercetin was determined using Liquid chromatography-Electron Spray Ionization-Tandom Mass Spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). Methods Antioxidant activity of the obtained three extracts were examined via the DPPH•, ABTS• + radical scavenging methods in addition to Ferrous Ion Chelating (FIC) effect. TFC and TPC of the extracts were measured using the aluminum chloride colorimetric method and the Folin-Ciocalteau method, respectively. The presence and concentration of the selected 11 compounds was further determined through LC-ESI-MS/MS. Results The results indicated that three Salvia species had high total flavonoids content expressed in mg quercetin/g dry extract (S. heirosolymitana: 770.85 ±  5.26; S. eigii: 520.60 ±  6.24, S. viridis: 311.36 ±  4.41). S. heirosolymitana had the highest DPPH• activity (0.184 ±  1.22 × 10−2 mg/ml) and FIC effect (0.354 ±  0.018 mg/ml). S. heirosolymitana had slightly higher ABTS• + scavenging activity than S. eigii (0.176 ±  1.16 × 10−2 mg/ml; 0.183 ±  0.031 mg/ml, respectively). All 11 compounds were detected in the extracts of the three Salvia species. Luteolin-7-O-glucoside was detected in high concentration levels in the three species (1756.73, 21651.36, and 26125.14 mg/kg dry plant; S. eigii, S. hierosolyimitana and S. viridis, respectively), yet rosmarinic acid had the highest contribution to both S. hierosolymitana (27124.93 mg/kg) and S. eigii (15783.33 mg/kg). Notably, S. hierosolymitana and S. viridis contained salvianolic acid B (896.11; 890.9 mg/kg). Conclusions The three Salvia species exhibited good antioxidant activity, especially S. heirosolymitana due to its high TPC, TFC, and the presence of high concentration levels of romarinic acid and other phenolic acids and flavonoids. This is the first phytochemical and antioxidant evaluation of S. eigii, S. hierosolymitana and S. viridis from Jordan. Prior to this investigation, no phytochemical investigation on S. eigii was reported.

Ekstrak etanol kayu manis memiliki kandungan fenol yang tinggi yang berpotensi sebagai antioksidan tetapi memiliki bioavailabilitas yang rendah pada kondisi ukuran partikel yang besar. Oleh karena itu, dilakukan analisis karakteristik nanopartikel ekstrak etanol kayu manis. Tujuan penelitian untuk membuat dan mengevaluasi karakteristik nanopartikel ekstrak kayu manis sebagai kandidat antioksidan secara in vitro. Preparasi nanopartikel ekstrak etanol kayu manis dengan metode gelasi ionik. Nanopartikel ekstrak etanol kayu manis memiliki ukuran partikel sebesar 400,3 nm dengan potential zeta +6,60 mV. Spektra Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) menunjukkan adanya gugus hidroksil dan gugus amida dari kitosan dan gugus fosfat dari STPP. Studi aktivitas antioksidan secara in vitro dengan metode 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) dan reduksi besi III menunjukkan bahwa nanopartikel ekstrak etanol kayu manis memiliki aktivitas antioksidan yang lebih kecil dibandingkan ekstrak tetapi masih dalam kategori sangat kuat. Aktivitas antioksidan yang diberikan dipengaruhi oleh kandungan total fenolik dan total flavonoid secara berturut-turut sebesar 75,685 ± 1,408 % EAG dan 60,546 ± 0,670 % EK untuk ekstrak etanol kayu manis serta 61,845 ± 0,529 % EAG dan 57,939 ± 0,446 % EK untuk nanopartikel ekstrak etanol kayu manis. Penerapan teknologi nanopartikel pada ekstrak etanol kayu manis melalui ikat silang antara kitosan-TPP dapat mempertahankan aktivitas antioksidannya.ABSTRACT Ethanol extract of cinnamon has a high phenol content which is potential as an antioxidant but has a low bioavailability under conditions of large particle size. Therefore, nanoparticles were prepared for the ethanol extract of cinnamon. The aim of this research was to make and evaluate the characteristics of cinnamon nanoparticles as antioxidant candidates in vitro. The cinnamon nanoparticles were prepared using the ionic gelation method. Cinnamon nanoparticles has a particle size of 400,3 nm with a zeta potential of +6,60 mV. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra showed the presence of a hydroxyl and amida group from chitosan and a phosphate group from STPP. In vitro antioxidant activity studies with the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) method and ferric reducing activity power showed that cinnamon nanoparticle has smaller antioxidant activity than the extract but is still in the very strong category. The antioxidant activity given is influenced by the total phenolic and total flavonoids content 75.685 ± 1.408% EAG and 60.546 ± 0.670% EK for cinnamon ethanol extract. and 61.845 ± 0.529% EAG and 57.939 ± 0.446% EK for cinnamon ethanol extract nanoparticles, respectively The application of nanoparticle technology to the ethanol extract of cinnamon through chitosan-TPP cross-linking can maintain its antioxidant activity.

The glucosinolate profiles, phenol and flavonoid contents and the antioxidant activity of Eruca vesicaria longirostris were studied for different organs and origins. Eleven desulpho-glucosinolates (DS-GLSs) were isolated and quantified by lipid chromatography- DAD. Similarity between profiles was obtained. Total DS-GLS content, expressed as sinigrin equivalents (SE) revealed a certain variabilily ranging between (76.07-45.61), (27.01-13.53), (4.52 -18.01), (9.39-3.37) and (1.16-13.99) µmol /g DW for seeds, flowers, leaves, roots and stems, respectively. Results showed that seeds are rich in phenolics as they contain highest amounts of phenolics ranging from 27.6±0.5 to 33.47±0.5 mg GAE/g extract as compared to all other parts. Leaves and flowers had a significantly higher total phenolic content than stems and roots in all samples (p < 0.05). According to statistical analysis, the investigated seed extracts with values between (16.20±0.10-18.50±0.10 mg QE/g) exhibited the highest total flavonoids content, followed by leaves (13.00±0.40-15.80±0.30mg QE/g), flowers (10.40±0.40-12.90±0.90 mg QE/g) and stems (7.80±0.20- 9.80±0.70 mg QE/g). Antioxidant activity tested by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays, was higher for seeds, leaves and flowers than the other studied organs. These organs were characterized by a significantly high content in glucoerucin, nasturtin and epiprogroitrin, respectively.

In the present work, four of the most widely used culinary herbs (parsley, dill, lovage and celery leaves) in the Romanian traditional cuisine were assessed for some nutritional quality parameters (moisture content, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid content and mineral content), total phenolics content, total flavonoids content and antioxidant activity by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. In addition, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with diode-array detection was applied for the identification and quantification of some individual phenolic compounds in the selected aromatic herbs. Although parsley showed the highest ascorbic acid content (206.32 mg/100 g fw), it registered the lowest antioxidant activity. Fresh lovage recorded the highest total phenolic content (577.04 mg GAE/100 g), total flavonoids content (298.38 mg QE/100 g) and antioxidant activity, followed by dill and celery leaves. Among the identified phenolic acids, ellagic acid was predominant in lovage and celery leaves whereas sinapic and vanillic acids were prevalent in dill. Among flavonoids, myricetin was predominant in parsley and celery leaves whereas rutin was predominant in dill and lovage.

Infectious diseases are the second leading cause for worldwide death. Treatment of infections continues to be difficult in modern time because of the severe side effects of some drugs and the growing resistance to antibacterial agents. Over the past few decades the use of antibiotics is under threat as many commonly used antibiotics have become less effective against certain illnesses due to emergence of multi drug-resistant bacteria. In the present study the effects of 3 types of solvents, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol were investigated to determine the presence of various phytochemical constituent, total phenolic content, total flavonoids content and in vitro antimicrobial activity from rhizomes of Iris kashmiriana (Kashmir Iris) and Iris ensata (Japanese Iris), belong to family Iridaceae. The reason for selecting in vitro method was to minimize the usage of experimental animals. The antimicrobial activity of chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extract of rhizomes of Iris kashmiriana and Iris ensata were evaluated on bacterial strains of Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas auregenosa, Proteus vulgaris and Eschirichia coli and fungal strains of Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger by agar well diffusion method. The preliminary phytochemical studies and quantitative analysis of alkaloids, phenol and flavonoids were performed by well reported method. These extracts were further subjected to TLC (Thin layer chromatography analysis).  The chemical contents of the Iris kashmiriana and Iris ensata were presented as total phenolic content and total flavonoids content. Phytochemical screening of the extract showed the presence of some common compounds like phenols, terpenoids, flavonoids, carbohydrate etc. The antimicrobial potential of the plant extract was evaluated against different bacterial species which shows significant inhibitory action against all the tested bacterial and fungal strain. Methanolic extract was found to be more active than chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts. It reveals that the methanol soluble components of the plant are highly active against the above mentioned microorganism. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of the best known plants biomarkers from the locality of Gafsa (Tunisia). Majority of investigated plants had high levels of phenolics and exhibited noteworthy antioxidant activity. The plants showing the highest antioxidant activities were P. angustifolia, T. garganica, G. alypum and L. multifida. P. angustifolia demonstrated by far the most potent antioxidant activity, as well as total phenolic and total flavonoids content. In flavonoid structure of the aerial parts of the related species, different amounts of rutin, myricetin, morin, quercetin and kaempferol together with ergosterol, stigma sterol and b-sitosterol as phytosterols, vitamin D, vitamin K, a-tocopherol and retinol as vitamins, and arabinose, fructose, glucose, sucrose and maltose as sugars were found. The mineral analysis was related to the existence of Ca, Na, K, Fe, Mn, Zn and Mg with different amounts in all of the nine tested species.
