A Brain-Computer Interface uses measurements of scalp electric potential (electroencephalography - EEG) reflecting brain activity, to communicate with external devices. Recent developments in electronics and computer sciences have enabled applications that may help users with disabilities and also to develop new types of Human Machine Interfaces. By producing modifications in their brain potential activity, the users can perform control of different devices. In order to perform actions, this EEG signals must be processed with proper algorithms. Our approach is based on a fuzzy inference system used to produce sharp control states from noisy EEG data.

Brain-Computer Interface is the collaboration of the human brain and a device that controls the actions of a human using brain signals. Applications of brain-computer interface vary from the field of entertainment to medical. In this article, a novel Deceit Identification Test is proposed based on the Electroencephalogram signals to identify and analyze the human behavior. Deceit identification test is based on P300 signals, which have a positive peak from 300 ms to 1,000 ms of the stimulus onset. The aim of the experiment is to identify and classify P300 signals with good classification accuracy. For preprocessing, a band-pass filter is used to eliminate the artifacts. The feature extraction is carried out using “symlet” Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT). Deep Neural Network (DNN) with two autoencoders having 10 hidden layers each is applied as the classifier. A novel experiment is conducted for the collection of EEG data from the subjects. EEG signals of 30 subjects (15 guilty and 15 innocent) are recorded and analyzed during the experiment. BrainVision recorder and analyzer are used for recording and analyzing EEG signals. The model is trained for 90% of the dataset and tested for 10% of the dataset and accuracy of 95% is obtained.

In recent years, a vast research is concentrated towards the development of electroencephalography (EEG)-based human-computer interface in order to enhance the quality of life for medical as well as nonmedical applications. The EEG is an important measurement of brain activity and has great potential in helping in the diagnosis and treatment of mental and brain neuro-degenerative diseases and abnormalities. In this chapter, the authors discuss the classification of EEG signals as a key issue in biomedical research for identification and evaluation of the brain activity. Identification of various types of EEG signals is a complicated problem, requiring the analysis of large sets of EEG data. Representative features from a large dataset play an important role in classifying EEG signals in the field of biomedical signal processing. So, to reduce the above problem, this research uses three methods to classify through feature extraction and classification schemes.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used in clinical diagnosis, monitoring and Brain - Computer Interface systems. Usually EEG signals are recorded with several electrodes and transmitted through a communication channel for further processing. In order to decrease communication bandwidth and transmission time in portable or low cost devices, data compression is required. In this paper we consider the use of fast Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) algorithms for lossy EEG data compression. Using this approach, the signal is partitioned into a set of 8 samples and each set is DCT-transformed. The least-significant transform coefficients are removed before transmission and are filled with zeros before an inverse transform. We conclude that this method can be used in real-time embedded systems, where low computational complexity and high speed is required.

AbstractProspects of using parallel computing technology (PaCT) methods for the stream processing and online analysis of multichannel EEG data are considered. It is shown that the application of PaCT to calculation and evaluation of spectral characteristics of EEG signals makes online determination of changes in the energy of the main rhythms of neural activity in various parts of the cerebral cortex possible. The possibility of implementing the PaCT algorithm with CUDA C library and its use in a modern brain–computer interface (BCI) for cognitive-activity monitoring in the course of visual perception.

Virtual environments (VEs), in the recent years, have become more prevalent in neuroscience. These VEs can offer great flexibility, replicability, and control over the presented stimuli in an immersive setting. With recent developments, it has become feasible to achieve higher-quality visuals and VEs at a reasonable investment. Our aim in this project was to develop and implement a novel real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI)–based neurofeedback (NF) training paradigm, taking into account new technological advances that allow us to integrate complex stimuli into a visually updated and engaging VE. We built upon and developed a first-person shooter in which the dynamic change of the VE was the feedback variable in the brain–computer interface (BCI). We designed a study to assess the feasibility of the BCI in creating an immersive VE for NF training. In a randomized single-blinded fMRI-based NF-training session, 24 participants were randomly allocated into one of two groups: active and reduced contingency NF. All participants completed three runs of the shooter-game VE lasting 10 min each. Brain activity in a supplementary motor area region of interest regulated the possible movement speed of the player’s avatar and thus increased the reward probability. The gaming performance revealed that the participants were able to actively engage in game tasks and improve across sessions. All 24 participants reported being able to successfully employ NF strategies during the training while performing in-game tasks with significantly higher perceived NF control ratings in the NF group. Spectral analysis showed significant differential effects on brain activity between the groups. Connectivity analysis revealed significant differences, showing a lowered connectivity in the NF group compared to the reduced contingency-NF group. The self-assessment manikin ratings showed an increase in arousal in both groups but failed significance. Arousal has been linked to presence, or feelings of immersion, supporting the VE’s objective. Long paradigms, such as NF in MRI settings, can lead to mental fatigue; therefore, VEs can help overcome such limitations. The rewarding achievements from gaming targets can lead to implicit learning of self-regulation and may broaden the scope of NF applications.

<div><div> <p><a></a></p><div> <p><a></a><a><i>Objective. </i></a>Modeling the brain as a white box is vital for investigating the brain. However, the physical properties of the human brain are unclear. Therefore, BCI algorithms using EEG signals are generally a data-driven approach and generate a black- or gray-box model. This paper presents the first EEG-based BCI algorithm (EEGBCI using Gang neurons, EEGG) decomposing the brain into some simple components with physical meaning and integrating recognition and analysis of brain activity. </p> <p><i>Approach. </i>Independent and interactive components of neurons or brain regions can fully describe the brain. This paper constructed a relationship frame based on the independent and interactive compositions for intention recognition and analysis using a novel dendrite module of Gang neurons. A total of 4,906 EEG data of left- and right-hand motor imagery(MI) from 26 subjects were obtained from GigaDB. Firstly, this paper explored EEGG’s classification performance by cross-subject accuracy. Secondly, this paper transformed the trained EEGG model into a relation spectrum expressing independent and interactive components of brain regions. Then, the relation spectrum was verified using the known ERD/ERS phenomenon. Finally, this paper explored the previously unreachable further BCIbased analysis of the brain. </p> <p><i>Main results. </i>(1) EEGG was more robust than typical “CSP+” algorithms for the poorquality data. (2) The relation spectrum showed the known ERD/ERS phenomenon. (3) Interestingly, EEGG showed that interactive components between brain regions suppressed ERD/ERS effects on classification. This means that generating fine hand intention needs more centralized activation in the brain. </p> <p><i>Significance. </i>EEGG decomposed the biological EEG-intention system of this paper into the relation spectrum inheriting the Taylor series (<i>in analogy with the data-driven but human-readable Fourier transform and frequency spectrum</i>), which offers a novel frame for analysis of the brain.</p> </div> </div></div><div><p></p></div>

In recent years, the control of devices “by the power of the mind” has become a very controversial topic but has also been very well researched in the field of state-of-the-art gadgets, such as smartphones, laptops, tablets and even smart TVs, and also in medicine, to be used by people with disabilities for whom these technologies may be the only way to communicate with the outside world. It is well known that BCI control is a skill and can be improved through practice and training. This paper aims to improve and diversify signal processing methods for the implementation of a brain-computer interface (BCI) based on neurological phenomena recorded during motor tasks using motor imagery (MI). The aim of the research is to extract, select and classify the characteristics of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, which are based on sensorimotor rhythms, for the implementation of BCI systems. This article investigates systems based on brain-computer interfaces, especially those that use the electroencephalogram as a method of acquisition of MI tasks. The purpose of this article is to allow users to manipulate quadcopter virtual structures (external, robotic objects) simply through brain activity, correlated with certain mental tasks using undecimal transformation (UWT) to reduce noise, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) together with determination coefficient (r2) and, for classification, a hybrid neural network consisting of Radial Basis Functions (RBF) and a multilayer perceptron–recurrent network (MLP–RNN), obtaining a classification accuracy of 95.5%. Following the tests performed, it can be stated that the use of biopotentials in human–computer interfaces is a viable method for applications in the field of BCI. The results presented show that BCI training can produce a rapid change in behavioral performance and cognitive properties. If more than one training session is used, the results may be beneficial for increasing poor cognitive performance. To achieve this goal, three steps were taken: understanding the functioning of BCI systems and the neurological phenomena involved; acquiring EEG signals based on sensorimotor rhythms recorded during MI tasks; applying and optimizing extraction methods, selecting and classifying characteristics using neuronal networks.

Brain Computer Interface consists of hardware and software that convert brain signals into action. It changes the nerves, muscles, and movements they produce with electro-physiological signs. The BCI cannot read the brain and decipher the thought in general. The BCI can only identify and classify specific patterns of activity in ongoing brain signals associated with specific tasks or events. EEG is the most commonly used non-invasive BCI method as it can be obtained easily compared to other methods. In this study; It will be given how EEG signals are obtained from the scalp, with which waves these frequencies are named and in which brain states these waves occur. 10-20 electrode placement plan for EEG to be placed on the scalp will be shown.
