Teaching materials are a set of tools or facilities that contain materials, methods and evaluations used by teachers or lecturers in learning. So far, the teaching materials released by several developers have rarely been in accordance with the needs of Mechanical Engineering students, where some of the teaching materials available still use general English. In this study, in order to compile an appropriate teaching material, researchers have conducted a needs analysis. Needs analysis is a fundamental aspect for English language lecturers for specific purposes (ESP) in identifying information or the main needs of students and investigating areas of student shortages. In line with this statement, this research is a case study design that aims to determine the needs of mechanical engineering students in learning English through Padlet at the Faculty of Engineering in the 2019-2020 academic year. The data in this study were collected from researcher observations, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 40 students and two English language lecturers in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Abstract The Language without Borders (LwB) Programme is an educational policy which aims at promoting English learning at universities as well as promoting opportunities for teacher development. LwB teachers have to prepare their own English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teaching materials. Taking this into account, we seek to understand how the LwB Programme prepares these teachers to create EAP materials and  if they encounter any difficulties. A needs analysis was carried out through online surveys and semi-structured interviews. The former was sent to LwB teachers from all over Brazil, and the latter was conducted with teachers from one university. Based on the results we suggest some topics that could be addressed in the pedagogical meetings to address these teachers’ needs. Keywords: English for academic purposes, teacher training, Languages without Borders.

This article aims at describing the rationale and principles of designing English teaching materials for teachers of non-English subjects. Those teachers use English as a medium of instruction. English is used to teach the subjects. To improve the teachers’ English skills, the school provided an English course. However, the teaching materials for those specific learners were not available. Therefore, designing materials is needed to precisely fulfil their needs of English in the target professional workplace. A needs analysis was conducted to gather information using questionnaires distributed to the non-English subject teachers as the learners. The data from the questionnaire were analysed qualitatively by interpreting and categorising in themes. Using the needs analysis result, a syllabus was then designed as the guidelines for developing the materials. This paper reports how the needs analysis process is employed to design a set of English teaching materials for nonEnglish subject teachers. The discussion highlighted the present situation, the target situation, the principles of designing English materials. The overview of the designed materials for teachers of non-English subjects was then presented.

This study is aimed at improving the quality of teaching English at the university level by aligning the students’ needs and the expectations of the lecturers (a needs analysis) with moral values in developing moral character-based English language teaching materials. Development research method is used to carry out this research by employing the ‘I-DO’ methodology which contains three distinct phases namely; 1). The input phase which is passed by a needs analysis involving 60 participants (55 students and 10 lectures). The participants were purposively selected. Questionnaires were used to collect the data which were analyzed by using descriptive approach. 2). The development Phase which is passed by formulating goals and objectives based on the information gathered from the needs analysis. 3) The output phase which is completed by making lesson plans, and producing prototype of the moral value-based teaching materials. This research has built one prototype of a well-developed ELT material for transactional speaking skill. We believe that our findings on the use of ‘I-DO’ methodology could have a profound impact on the way ELT materials is developed in language program.
