ABSTRACT Objective: To measure the levels of depression among Nursing students from a public institution of higher education and the association with aspects of academic life. Method: Analytical and quantitative study with 203 students from a higher education institution that uses active methodologies. We used Beck’s Depression Inventory and the Likert type scale of academic factors. Results: We verified that 19.2% had moderate or severe levels of depression. Higher levels of depression were associated with female gender (p=0.003), working more than 40 hours per week (p=0.047), spending more than 90 minutes to reach academic activities (p=0.043) and with 12 academic factors specific to routines of the studied institution. Conclusion: The results contribute to managers’ and professors’ reflection and analysis concerning nursing students’ mental health, in addition to indicating in which aspects there is a need to provide greater support to these students.

ABSTRACT The approval of the More Doctors Program has triggered a number of readjustments of the National Curricular Guidelines (DCNs) for Medical Education, like the creation of a mental health internship integrated into the health service and community. Due to this demand, the higher education institutions have been encouraged to innovate in their teaching-learning methodologies in order to guarantee a generalist, humanistic and critical professional education. We report the experience of a private higher education institution in the implementation of a mental health internship in consonance with the new DCNs. We present all the steps of the implementation, reporting the participation of students, supervisors, preceptors and managers. We show that a mental health internship linked to different levels of healthcare promotes learning conditions capable of favoring the decentralization of care and application of the community/family approach.

Expressiveness is the ability of individuals to make their thoughts alive through language and body, effectively transmitting information. This study investigated the expressiveness of a university professor during nursing classes in relation to verbal resources from the perspective of students. This descriptive and quantitative study was carried out in a Higher Education Institution using specific instruments to assess expressiveness. The professor's class was video recorded and the video was first assessed by three speech and language experts and later assessed by 141 students with whom he had no previous contact. The results reveal that students and experts agreed in relation to the professors' expressive skills, which proved the ability of students to evaluate this communication skill.

The aim of this study was to identify the perceptions of the hearing impaired students and the Accessibility Center employees of a Public Higher Education Institution regarding the policies and actions of accessibility and permanence in the education offered in the institution in which they are linked. Also, to verify the association between the preferential linguistic modality of the hearing impaired students and their responses regarding the policies of accessibility and permanence in education in a Higher Education Institution. As well as to identify the architectural and communicational barriers that undermines the academic performance of these students. 14 hearing impaired students and 5 Accessibility Center employees of a Higher Education Institution participated in this study. The data collection occurred through an online questionnaire. It was verified that the two groups did not obtained similar perceptions regarding accessibility and permanence. There was no statistical difference between the linguistic modality and the responses regarding accessibility and permanence in higher education. The students report as main architectural and communication barriers: classroom, learning disability and difficulty in following the contents during classes. This research verified that there is a divergence between students and employees´ perceptions. Regardless of the preferred linguistic modality, students with hearing impairment have the same perceptions regarding accessibility and permanence in higher education. ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge, applicability and importance that nursing students attribute to therapeutic communicative strategies. Methods: This is a quantitative study (survey) with nursing undergraduates from a public institution. The online questionnaire by the SurveyMonkey tool, comprising the informed consent form and six questions, had its relevance, clarity and operability assessed by experts. Results: Of the 104 graduates, 50 participated in the study; the most well-known and applied strategy was Therapeutic Communication, followed by Ask-Tell-Ask, NURSE and Tell Me More; the least were PACIENTE and SPIKES. Most use the strategies they know best; all were considered important by at least 82% of the students. Conclusions: The partial knowledge and application of these strategies by the students contributes to reflect on the complexity of their teaching-learning process.
