ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the seroprevalence and associated factors of Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) and Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD), and to analyze the possible relationship between IBR, BVD, and the occurrence of mastitis. For this purpose, 854 crossbred dairy cows were evaluated from 69 properties allocated in the 12 municipalities that make up the Caparaó region, Espírito Santo (ES), Brazil. The seroprevalence of IBR and BVD was determined using the indirect ELISA test. Associations between variables were estimated using the prevalence ratio (PR) with a 95% confidence interval. The chi-square test was used to verify the significance of the associations (P < 0.05). The average prevalence of IBR and BVD was 48.59% and 26.46%, respectively. Animals seroreactive for IBR were more likely to develop subclinical mastitis (P < 0.01; PR: 1.27), and cows that were seroreactive for BVD were more likely to develop clinical mastitis (P < 0.01; PR: 2.24). Mechanical milking was considered a factor associated with IBR (P < 0.01; PR: 1.36) and BVD (P < 0.01; PR: 1.25). Reproductive management by natural breeding was considered a factor associated with IBR (P < 0.01; PR: 1.22). Animals seroreactive for BVD were more likely to develop reproductive problems (P < 0.01; PR: 1.34). It was concluded that the agents that cause IBR and BVD are widely disseminated in dairy cattle herds in the municipalities of the Caparaó region, ES, Brazil. The presence of IBR and BVD increased the chances of cows developing subclinical mastitis and clinical mastitis, respectively, and the cows that were mechanically milked were more likely to be seroreactive for IBR and BVD.

In this study, 168 blood sera were collected from dairy cows in Selenge and Tuv aimags during 2013 - 2014. The ELISA was carried out for serological detection of antibodies and antigens to Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), antibodies to Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV) in dairy cows in Mongolia. The ELISA results of antibodies of BVDV and antigen of BVDV showed that 86.9% and 3.57%, respectively. The seroprevalence of antibodies against IBRV was found to be 60.7%. In order to confirm of BVDV, One Step RT-PCR was performed in ELISA positive cattle serum samples using specific primer for BVDV. The results showed that 294 bp fragment was successfully amplified. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the nucleotide sequences 5'UTR gene of the isolates belonged to the BVDV1 subtype. Four isolated virus samples were closely related to China, the another isolate was closely related to the Slovenia BVDV1 isolate.

Objective: To identify the prevalence of notified self-inflicted injuries among adolescents in Espírito Santo and to analyze the associated factors. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional and analytical study, with the notified data of self-inflicted violence among adolescents in Espírito Santo registered in the Notifiable Diseases Information System from 2011 to 2018. The bivariate analyses considered the Chi-square (χ²) and Fisher’s Exact tests. The multivariate analysis considered the log-binomial model, and the adjustment results were presented as prevalence ratio. Results: The prevalence of notified self-inflicted injuries was 33 % and, of this total, 79.8 % occurred among female adolescents. Prevalence was higher among adolescents aged from 13 to 17 years old (female gender) and from 18 to 19 years old (male gender), as well as among those with some disability or disorder. Higher prevalence values were found in the residence and in collective housing, as well as among those who did not consume alcohol at the event in question. In the female gender, there was also an association with the urban area (p < 0.05). Conclusions: High prevalence of notified self-inflicted injuries is perceived among adolescents in Espírito Santo, as well as of the factors associated to this phenomenon. The importance of adopting promotion, prevention and recovery measures for the problem is verified.

Mycoplasmas are an important and economically significant cause of mastitis in dairy cows in various parts of the world. The organisms are highly contagious, with the main reservoir of infection originating from cows with subclinical mastitis. In 1998 the 1st cases of bovine mastitis due to Mycoplasma bovis were diagnosed in Ardabil State, Iran. An investigation was carried out with the aim of establishing the extent of mycoplasma infections in dairy cows in Ardabil State. Milk samples obtained from 80 cows with clinical mastitis were cultured in the laboratory for the presence of mycoplasmas. Similarly, 48 bulk-tank milk samples were examined for the presence of mycoplasmas. A modified Hayflick broth was used to isolate the mycoplasmas and an immunoperoxidase test used for the species identification of the isolates. Mycoplasma bovis was isolated from 39 (48.75 %) of the clinical mastitis samples and from 48 of the bulk-tank milk samples tested. This indicated that mycoplasma udder infections were more prevalent in dairy cows in Ardabil State than previously thought.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to assess the spatial variability pattern concerning udder surface temperature in dairy cows that were healthy and in those with mastitis. A total of 24 animals were selected - eight healthy, eight with subclinical mastitis, and eight with clinical mastitis. Images were taken with a Flir i60 thermographic camera - resolution of 0.01°C, focal length of 1.0 m, and emissivity adjusted to 0.98 - between 05:00 and 07:00, totaling 96 images, three per animal, of the front and rear, right and left mammary quarters. Analyses were run through geostatistics, with semivariogram adjustment to validate the theoretical model and build kriging maps. The average surface temperature of the mammary quarters with positive classification for subclinical mastitis stood between 33.2 ± 0.67ºC and 34.64± 1.07ºC; for negative quarters, values ranged from 29.3 ± 1.78ºC to 32.24 ± 0.62ºC. The udder surface temperatures of healthy animals were lower than those of animals with subclinical mastitis (29.3ºC ± 1.78 and 31.58ºC ± 0.62). The udder surface temperature of animals with clinical mastitis was higher, between 34.0 and 37.5°C, compared to the other clinical statuses. The scale adopted for image pattern analysis successfully identified the spatial dependence of udder surface temperature, which helped standardize diagnostic procedures for healthy animals, and for those with subclinical and clinical mastitis, by means of geostatistics.

In beef cattle production under pasture-based tropical conditions, the minerals most likely to be lacking are Ca, P, Na, Co, Cu, I, Se, and Zn, all of which are required for optimal growth and reproduction. Phosphorous deficiency, in particular, is a major problem for grazing cattle in many tropical regions. On the other hand, reproductive infectious diseases are the greatest threat to the production and profitability of beef cattle herds. To overcome reproductive failure, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of injectable mineral supplementation and vaccination against reproductive diseases on synchronised Nelore females for fixed-time AI. A total of 1361 females were enrolled, and blood was collected from a random population (n=150) to measure serum antibodies against Leptospira sp., infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, and bovine viral diarrhea, mineral status, and creatinine. With Day 0 as the beginning of the synchronisation programme and Day 10 as the day of fixed-time AI, females were randomly assigned as follows. In the control treatment (n=365), no additional treatment was administered. In the Vaccine treatment (n=314), at Days −21 and 0 females received a 5-mL subcutaneous injection of BovigenRepro (Virbac; inactivated vaccine containing infectious bovine rhinotracheitis 1 and 5; bovine viral diarrhea 1 and 2; Campylobacter fetus ssp. fetus, venerealis, and venerealis biotype intermedius; and Leptospira pomona, wolffi, hardjo prajitno, icterohaemorrhagiae, canicola, copenhageni, bratislava, and hardjo bovis in an adjuvant of 10% Al(OH)3 with Se). In the Suppl treatment (n=314), at Day 0 females received a 15-mL intramuscular injection of Fosfosal (Virbac; 100mL containing Na glycerophosphate (14g), monosodium phosphate (20.1g), copper chloride (0.4g), potassium chloride (0.6g), magnesium chloride (2.5g), and sodium selenite (0.24g). In the SupplVacc treatment (n=363), females received a 5-mL subcutaneous injection of the vaccine at Days −21 and 0 as well as a 5-mL intramuscular injection of Fosfosal at Day 0. Pregnancy was verified by transrectal ultrasound at Days 40 and 100. Body condition score was recorded on Days −21 and 40. Data were analysed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS (SAS University edition, SAS Institute Inc.). When significant, Tukey and least squares means tests were used to compare means. Serum analysis showed that 89% of the animals had seroprevalence to at least two diseases. Average blood P concentration was 7.2mg dL−1. Pregnancy was affected by Ca levels (pregnant=2.55mg dL−1; non-pregnant=2.33mg dL−1; P<0.05) and creatinine levels (pregnant=5.85mg dL−1; non-pregnant=5.76mg dL−1; P<0.05). The average BCS was 3.2 (1=skinny; 5=fat), and there was no effect of time (Days −21 to 40). Pregnancy verified by transrectal ultrasound at Day 40 for the Vaccine, Suppl, SupplVacc, and control treatments was 54, 52, 57, and 49% (P=0.11), respectively. There was a tendency of higher pregnancy verified by transrectal ultrasound at Day 90 for the SupplVacc group (55%) compared with the control group (45%; P<0.1). There was no effect of pregnancy loss among groups that were vaccinated (control=6%, vaccine=5%, Suppl=4%, and SupplVacc=3%). Considering only pluriparous cows, there was an increase in pregnancy per AI in the SupplVacc group (59%) compared with the control group (51%; P<0.05). Once females presented a very good BCS, the supplement effect was only an immunostimulant. Starting a breeding season with supplementation and vaccination can increase pregnancy rate and profitability for farmers.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of mastitis and its impact on the reproductive parameters in a herd of 180 dairy cows. Based on the herd records 127 cows of Slovak spotted cattle and their crosses with red Holstein were selected for study between 1—2 months after calving. The examination of the health status of the mammary glands consisted of: the clinical examination of the udder, the California mastitis test (CMT) supplemented by the collection of mixed milk samples, and the laboratory examination of bacterial pathogens causing the mastitis. In addition to the mammary investigation, reproduction indicators such as the length of the insemination interval, the service period, the intercalving period and the insemination index were also analyzed. The results of this study indicated: a high incidence of mastitis (41.6 %), especially latent (21.2 %), subclinical (15.7 %) and clinical (4.7 %) forms were most common in the herd. The most frequently isolated bacteria from the infected milk samples were: coagulase negative staphylococci (54.1 %), S. aureus (16.9 %), Streptococcus spp. (15.0 %), A. viridans (7.5 %) and Ent. faecalis (6.4 %). According to the available literature, the optimum values of the intercalving period were 365—400 days, the insemination interval 55—80 days, the insemination index 1.2—2 and the service period 60—110 days. In comparison, our results showed increased, unsatisfactory reproductive values in the group of dairy cows with clinical mastitis. While in healthy cows as well as in groups of cows with latent and subclinical mastitis, all of the reproductive indicators were within the optimal levels.
