ABSTRACT The objective of this case report was to describe histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of the first reported basaloid carcinomas in the canine mammary gland. Two bitches were treated for tumors in the mammary gland and underwent mastectomy. Microscopic evaluation of these tumors revealed epithelial cells arranged in a predominantly solid pattern with hyperchromatic peripheral cells arranged in a palisade pattern. Metastases in regional lymph nodes were found in both animals, and one bitch exhibited pulmonary metastasis. Immunohistochemistry revealed positive labeling for the basal cell markers cytokeratin 14 and p63. Histopathological and immunohistochemical findings led to diagnoses of basaloid carcinoma of the canine mammary gland with regional and distant metastasis.

This report describes the clinical and histopathological findings associated with a mammary chondrosarcoma in a mongrel bitch. The tumour was located in the right caudo-abdominal mammary gland, and was 6 × 8 × 4 cm in size, weighed 200 g and was very firm to the touch. Microscopically, a well differentiated chondrosarcoma, rarely observed in canine mammary gland tumours, was diagnosed.

Introduction: Glucagonoma is a rare pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor derived from alpha-cells of the islet of Langerhans. Due to oversecretion of glucagon it is associated with a characteristic paraneoplastic phenomenon, called glucagonoma syndrome, which consists of necrolytic migratory erythema (NME), weight loss, diabetes mellitus, diarrhea, normochromic normocytic anemia, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism and neuropsychiatric disturbances. Treatment modalities include surgical removal of tumor, somatostatin analogs and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT). Case report: We present a case of 61-year-old woman diagnosed with glucagonoma in April 2012. Initially, body-caudal pancreatomy and resection of regional lymph nodes were performed. Five months after surgery, a PET-CT scan detected pathological mass with expression of somatostatin receptors in pancreatic body and metastases to regional lymph nodes. What is more, since April 2014 the patient had complained about persistent pruritus of the entire body. At present, due to the nonsurgical pancreatic mass and metastases she is treated with somatostatin analogs and PRRT. During this therapy the pruritus had decreased and currently there is no sign of cutaneous disease. Moreover, reduction of tumor size was obtained. Conclusions: PRRT may reduce tumor size and by reducing bothersome symptoms substantially improve the quality of life in patients with SSTR-positive tumors

A 21-year-old thoroughbred mare had a 35 X 14 X 10 cm mass involving the mammary gland. Metastases were found in the kidneys, lungs, skeletal muscles, and regional lymph nodes. Histopathologic examination of the tumor revealed a ductal solid carcinoma with extensive intraductal and intralobular involvement and focal infiltration of the adjacent stroma. The intralobular neoplasms were divided into irregularly shaped islands and sheets of polygonal and spindle-shaped epithelial cells by thick or thin fibrous connective tissue bundles. The neoplastic cells had a small or moderate amount of cytoplasm that stained faintly with eosin and round or oval hyperchromatic nuclei. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were strongly positive for Lu-5, weakly positive for AE1/AE3, vimentin, and glial fibrillary acidic protein, and negative for cytokeratin 8, cytokeratin 14, a-smooth muscle actin, calponin, and S100. The neoplasm was diagnosed as an invasive ductal carcinoma of the mammary gland with multiple metastases.

BackgroundThe safety and benefit of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) compared with regional lymph node dissection (RLND) and no lymph nodes removed (NA) in patients with vulvar squamous cell cancer (VSCC) was not well studied.MethodsA retrospective analysis on VSCC patients without distant metastasis and adjacent organ invasion from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program database between 2004 and 2016 was carried out. Within subgroups stratified by negative (LN−) or positive (LN+) regional lymph node findings, inverse probability weighting (IPW) adjusted multivariate Fine-Gray compete risk (CR) model and accelerated failure time (AFT) model was used to investigate the factors associated with and cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS).ResultsOf the 3,161 VSCC patients treated with surgery, 287 (9.1%) underwent SLNB, 1,716 (54.3%) underwent RLND, and 1,158 (36.6%) had no regional lymph nodes removed. As illustrated by IPW adjusted multivariate regressions, SLNB was significantly associated with prolonged CSS (LN−, adjusted sub-proportional hazard ratio [sHR] = 0.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.19–0.93; P=0.032; LN+, adjusted sHR = 0.29; 95% CI, 0.16–0.54, P<0.001) and OS (LN−, adjusted time ratio [TR] = 1.38; 95% CI, 0.82–2.32; P=0.226; LN+, adjusted TR = 2.68; 95% CI, 1.73–4.14; P<0.001), although the effect of SLNB on OS was not significant within the LN− cohort. Moreover, SLNB led to improved CSS (adjusted sHR = 0.40; 95% CI, 0.23–0.70; P = 0.001) and OS (adjusted TR=1.15, 95% CI 0.76-1.73, P=0.279) compared with NA. Age was a significant prognostic factor of CSS and OS, whereas tumor size, surgery type, and invasion depth were not.ConclusionsSLNB leads to significantly prolonged CSS and OS in VSCC surgery patients without distant metastasis and adjacent organ invasion than RLND, except for the similar OS in the LN− cohort. SLNB could be carried out preferentially for VSCC surgery patients without distant metastasis and adjacent organ invasion, irrespective of tumor size, surgery type, invasion depth, and regional lymph nodes metastasis. Further prospective clinical trials are warranted to confirm the findings of this study.

Abstract A case of duodenal gangliocytic paraganglioma (DGP) in a 67-year-old woman is presented. The DGP arose in the second part of the duodenum. Although most of the reported cases of DGP are considered benign, in the present case, we found regional lymph nodes containing metastatic tumor. Previous reports have documented metastases containing only epithelioid cells. The current case demonstrates metastatic tumor in regional lymph nodes containing all 3 of the DGP components (spindle cells, ganglion-like cells, and epithelioid cells).

Mammary aspergillosis was diagnosed in four flocks of dairy sheep, comprising a total of 1,750 ewes. These animals had been treated prophylactically by intramammary infusion with cloxacillin 5 months prior to lambing. Mammary aspergillosis with concomitant spread to the regional lymph nodes was present in these flocks in a percentage ranging from 2% to 36.4% of treated sheep. Pathologic, bacteriologic, and mycologic studies were performed in seven of the affected ewes. Some of them also had lung, kidney, and liver involvement. The pathologic reaction within lesions ranged from the acute to subacute type, dominated by necrosis and vasculitis with thrombosis, to the chronic granulomatous type, with macrophages and giant cells. The distribution of lesions and the presence of a remarkable vasculitis with fungal thrombi in the mammary gland suggested a hematogenous dissemination of the infection from this organ. Immunologic staining with monoclonal antibody MAb-WF-AF-1, which reacts specifically with Aspergillus hyphae, identified the causative agent in histologic sections of the different affected tissues. The etiologic diagnosis was further supported by the isolation of Aspergillus fumigatus in pure culture from affected tissues and from eight samples of mammary secretions.

Fifty canine mammary gland tumours (CMGT) (18 benign and 32 malignant) were studied by immunohistochemical detection of active caspase-3 and Ki-67 antigens in order to determine their association with several clinicopathological parameters. The percentage of caspase-3 positive cells was significantly higher in benign tumours as compared to their malignant counterparts (P ≤ 0.001). In the group of malignant tumours there was no significant association between active caspase-3 and the clinicopathological variables considered. The percentage of Ki- 67 positive cells was significantly higher in malignant tumours compared to the benign ones (P ≤ 0.001). In the group of malignant tumours, Ki-67 expression showed a statistically significant association with tumour size (P = 0.025), histological type (P = 0.010), mitotic grade (P ≤ 0.001), nuclear grade (P = 0.025), differentiation grade (P = 0.004), histological grade of malignancy (P = 0.002), and presence of metastases in regional lymph nodes (P = 0.025). Furthermore, this study revealed a negative correlation between the percentages of active caspase-3 and Ki-67 (r = –0.39; P = 0.04). Thus, our results suggest a loss of balance between cell death and cell division in CMGT. Key words: Apoptosis, caspase-3, Ki
