Abstract Background Products containing delta-8-THC became widely available in most of the USA following the 2018 Farm Bill and by late 2020 were core products of hemp processing companies, especially where delta-9-THC use remained illegal or required medical authorization. Research on experiences with delta-8-THC is scarce, some state governments have prohibited it because of this lack of knowledge. Objective We conducted an exploratory study addressing a broad range of issues regarding delta-8-THC to inform policy discussions and provide directions for future systematic research. Methods We developed an online survey for delta-8-THC consumers, including qualities of delta-8-THC experiences, comparisons with delta-9-THC, and open-ended feedback. The survey included quantitative and qualitative aspects to provide a rich description and content for future hypothesis testing. Invitations to participate were distributed by a manufacturer of delta-8-THC products via social media accounts, email contact list, and the Delta8 Reddit.com discussion board. Participants (N = 521) mostly identified as White/European American (90%) and male (57%). Pairwise t tests compared delta-8-THC effect rating items; one-sample t tests examined responses to delta-9-THC comparison items. Results Most delta-8-THC users experienced a lot or a great deal of relaxation (71%); euphoria (68%) and pain relief (55%); a moderate amount or a lot of cognitive distortions such as difficulty concentrating (81%), difficulties with short-term memory (80%), and alerted sense of time (74%); and did not experience anxiety (74%) or paranoia (83%). Participants generally compared delta-8-THC favorably with both delta-9-THC and pharmaceutical drugs, with most participants reporting substitution for delta-9-THC (57%) and pharmaceutical drugs (59%). Participant concerns regarding delta-8-THC were generally focused on continued legal access. Conclusions Delta-8-THC may provide much of the experiential benefits of delta-9-THC with lesser adverse effects. Future systematic research is needed to confirm participant reports, although these studies are hindered by the legal statuses of both delta-8-THC and delta-9-THC. Cross-sector collaborations among academics, government officials, and representatives from the cannabis industry may accelerate the generation of knowledge regarding delta-8-THC and other cannabinoids. A strength of this study is that it is the first large survey of delta-8 users, limitations include self-report data from a self-selected convenience sample.

Abstract The transduction process that occurs in the inner ear of the auditory system is a complex mechanism which requires a non-linear dynamical description. In addition to this, the stochastic phenomena that naturally arise in the inner ear during the transduction of an external sound into an electro-chemical signal must also be taken into account. The presence of noise is usually undesirable, but in non-linear systems a moderate amount of noise can improve the system's performance and increase the signal-to-noise ratio. The phenomenon of stochastic resonance combines randomness with non-linearity and is a natural candidate to explain at least part of the hearing process which is observed in the inner ear. In this work, we present a toy model of the auditory system which shows how stochastic resonance can be instrumental to sound perception, and suggests an explanation of the frequency dependence of the hearing threshold.

ZnO varistor ceramics with a high potential gradient, as well as a high nonlinear coefficient, were reported and analyzed in this paper. With the use of nano-sized ZnO powders, the average grain size was reduced to about 2.6 μm, which successfully raised the potential gradient to 1172 V/mm. Moreover, the nonlinear coefficient increased to 48, and the leakage current was decreased to 8.4 μA/cm2 by doping a moderate amount of MnO (0.9 mol%). This was proven to be caused by the high Schottky barrier height formed at the grain boundary, where the Mn element segregated and, consequently, led to the increased density of interface states. Therefore, this could be considered as a potential method to simultaneously enhance the potential gradient and the nonlinear coefficient of ZnO varistor ceramics.

Water melon (citrullus lanatus) is a flowering plant species of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is- rich in an amino - acid called citrulline and may help move blood through the body and widely used as flavouring agent and also contributes substantially towards obtaining a balanced diet. This research was aimed to evaluate the proximate and anti nutritional factors of the plant to ensure human and animal food security. The proximate composition was done by soxhlet extraction, AOAC, Kjeldhal and other standard procedures while anti nutrients were analysed using standard procedures. The results of the research revealed the proximate composition of the water melon seeds such as moisture content, crude protein, lipids, ash content, crude fibre and carbohydrate. Low moisture content (5.20±0.003) high proteins (17.844±0.012) and lipids (18.208± 0.004) with others detected in moderate amount was obtained. Anti - nutritional factors such as oxalate, phytate, cyanide, nitrate, and tannin were also analyzed which revealed low oxalate content (0.005± 0.003) with moderate amount of phytate (4.366±0141), nitrate (47.309±0.539) and cyanide (41.510±0.138). Therefore water melon seeds might be vital in maintaining an optimum nutritional status to avoid malnutrition, morbidity or mortality.

Abstract Abu Dhabi's thick Lower Cretaceous carbonate reservoirs experience injection water overriding oil. The water is held above the oil by negative capillary pressure until a horizontal borehole placed at the reservoir base creates a small pressure drawdown. This causes the water above to slump unpredictably towards the horizontal producer, increasing water cut and eventually killing the well under natural lift after a moderate amount of oil production. Water slumping is difficult to forecast using the reservoir model. This paper showcases the successful deployment of an ultra-deep electromagnetic directional resistivity (UDDE) instrument to map injection water movement. The UDDE instrument selected for the 6-in. horizontal hole was a 4¾-in. OD multifrequency tool with configurable transmitter-to-receiver spacings. Pre-well modeling using hybrid deterministic 1D resistivity inversions was conducted for the candidate well to investigate the resistivity tool's ability to identify water slumping at distances 60-100 ft TVD above the planned well trajectory. The inversions aided the selection of optimum operating frequencies, transmitter-to-receiver spacings and BHA configuration. During operations, multiple 1D and 3D inversions were run in the cloud real time during drilling to provide simultaneous deep and shallow resistivity inversions for early identification of the water fronts and structural changes, and near wellbore changes to geosteer and maximize reservoir contact in the complex layered reservoir. Real-time 1D and 3D deep inversion results indicated the resistivity tool had a depth of reliable waterflood detection of more than 80 ft. While drilling, an interpreted subseismic fault was encountered which appeared to influence how water moved in the reservoir. Water slumped closest through the sub-seismic fault towards the well path. Past the fault, the waterfront receded upwards away from the well bore. The data proved useful for updating the static model, providing a snapshot of water flood areas, reservoir tops and faults with throw, helping to optimize the completion design to defer water production and enhance oil production. Furthermore, it captured resistivities of target, underlying and overlying reservoirs to integrate with other geology and geophysics data for better reservoir and fluid characterization near the drilled area. The positive results of this case study encouraged field-wide implementation of this technology for waterflood mapping. The information provided allowed petroleum engineers to adjust the completion design to delay water breakthrough. This proactive approach to waterflood field management improves cumulative oil production and recovery factors according to mechanistic models which have been built and tested.

Alcohol hangover (AH) has been associated with poor sleep due to the negative effects of alcohol intoxication on sleep quantity and sleep quality. The aim of the current study was to further explore the relationship between AH severity and sleep using a naturalistic study design. A further aim was to determine whether quantitative aspects of sleep were a mediating influence on the relationship between AH severity and cognitive performance. As part of the naturalistic study design, 99 drinkers were recruited following a night of drinking in an Australian state capital, with breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) measured as participants were leaving the entertainment district. The following morning at home, participants answered online questions regarding their drinking behaviour on the previous evening, current AH symptoms and sleep quality. Participants also completed an online version of the Trail-Making Test B (TMT-B) to assess cognitive performance. The findings reveal the duration of nightly awakenings to be negatively related to six individual AH symptoms as well as overall AH severity. The number of nightly awakenings, sleep quality and total sleep time correlated with four AH symptoms including overall AH severity. Total AH severity accounted for a moderate amount of variance (11%) in the time to complete the TMT-B. These findings confirm that alcohol consumption negatively affects sleep, which is related to higher next-day hangover severity ratings and poorer cognitive performance.

Abstract We used the NHATS COVID-19 module to examine whether individuals in long-term care communities were lonelier than individuals in the community during the pandemic. Additionally, we examined whether individuals in long-term care communities with more restrictive policies concerning visitors and communal activities were more likely to experience loneliness than individuals in communities with less restrictive policies. Approximately 45% of individuals in long-term care communities (n=134) felt at least a moderate amount of loneliness during COVID-19 when compared to 34% of individuals in the community (n= 2,666) (p<.05). However, the association was no longer statistically significant after adjusting for age, race, and sex. Among individuals in long-term care communities with the most restrictive policies, 48% experienced loneliness compared to 44% individuals in less restrictive communities. However, this finding was not statistically significant. Discussion will focus on similarities and differences within these populations that could have led to these results.

Abstract Despite existing evidence on the negative association between informal caregiving and caregiver’s well-being, three important knowledge gaps remain. First, the link warrants further scrutiny due to the possibility of individual heterogeneity. Second, less is known about how informal caregiving is related to caregiver’s well-being. Third, there is little consensus in the literature regarding whether caregiver’s gender matters. This study fills these gaps in the literature. Using seven waves of a large-scale, nationally representative longitudinal study of older adults in Korea between 2006 and 2018, this study employed generalized estimating equations models with a lagged dependent variable as well as fixed effects models. Findings from both models revealed that informal caregiving is negatively associated with subjective well-being, and this association is largely driven by female caregivers. To explore potential mechanisms undergirding this association, we examined the mediating roles of a number of health behaviors. We found that engaging in informal caregiving is associated with a reduction in regular exercise. Results from mediation analyses, however, suggested that regular exercise explains only a moderate amount of the observed association (12% for health-related life satisfaction and 8% for self-rated health). While informal caregiving is obviously a rewarding role, it poses a serious threat to caregiver’s well-being. Findings of this study on gender differences in the well-being consequences of informal caregiving lend support to taking a gender-conscious approach in programs aiming to improve the well-being of informal caregivers.

Abstract The present study tries to assess the nutritional status and dietary behaviours in a group of undergraduate students in order to characterize their food habits and assess the quality of their diet. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 220 undergraduate university students (110 male and 110 female) aged between 19 and 24 years from the Food Department of Saad Dahlab Blida 1 University (Algeria). The data collection and nutritional evaluation were carried out using DIAL nutritional software. Male participants had significantly (P < 0.005) higher body mass index (BMI) when compared to females. Significantly higher percentages of female students (P < 0.005) had tried a low-fat diet (P = 0.0075) and a low-carbohydrate diet (P < 0.005). The prevalence of overweight was higher among males compared to females. In contrast, a greater percentage of underweight students were observed in the group of female subjects. Related to micronutrient intake, a significant difference by sex was observed for vitamin A, C, folic acid, iron, calcium, and sodium intakes. However, females consumed more food containing vitamins C and A, whereas males’ intake of calcium, sodium, folic acid, and iron was higher than the corresponding values observed in females. To conclude, these students reported a diet characterized by a high variety of cereal products and a moderate amount of vegetables, milk and dairy products, meat, fish and eggs, dietary fats and beverages, whereas the consumption of fruits was highly infrequent.

AbstractHere we employ a novel analysis to address the question: what causes induced forgetting of pictures? We use baseline memorability as a measure of initial memory strength to ask whether induced forgetting is due to (1) recognition practice damaging the association between the memory representation and the category cue used to activate the representation, (2) the updating of a memory trace by incorporating information about a memory probe presented during recognition practice to the stored trace, (3) inhibitory mechanisms used to resolve the conflict created when correctly selecting the practiced item activates competing exemplars, (4) a global matching model in which repeating some items will hurt memory for other items, or (5) falling into the zone of destruction, where a moderate amount of activation leads to the highest degree of forgetting. None of the accounts of forgetting tested here can comprehensively account for both the novel analyses reported here and previous data using the induced forgetting paradigm. We discuss aspects of forgetting theories that are consistent with the novel analyses and existing data, a potential solution for existing models, proposals for future directions, and considerations when incorporating memorability into models of memory.
