Male euglossine bees attracted to cineole, vanillin, methyl salicylate, eugenol and benzyl benzoate, were collected from October 1995 to September 1996, twice a month, between 06.00 and 12.00 hours, at the Companhia Vale do Rio Doce Forest Reserve, Buriticupu-MA. It were sampled 1740 individuals, 37 species and 4 genera. Euglossa was the most abundant genus (23 species), followed by Eufriesea (8), Eulaema (4) and Exaerete (2). The most frequent species were Euglossa pleosticta (33% of the collected individuals), Euglossa truncata (12,7%), Euglossa avicula (6,3%), Eufriesea superba (5,2%), Euglossa fimbriata (4,8%) Euglossa violaceifrons (4,4%), Eulaema nigrita (4,1%), Euglossa cordata (4,0%), Eulaema meriana (3,4%). Cineole attracted 66% of males and 70% of species, vanillin (20%; 59%), methyl salicylate (7,4%; 54%), eugenol (5,6%; 44%) and benzyl benzoate (0,7%; 10,8%). The highest abundance of individuals (78,3%) and species (34) occurred in the rainy season (January-June). The species of the genus Eufriesea occurred only in this period. Regarding the hourly activity, the euglossine bees were more frequently found between 10.00 and 11.00 hours, accounting for 33,5% of the individuals and 86,4% of the species.

A study was conducted in an early second-growth forest aiming at knowing the richness, relative abundance, seasonal distribution, and hourly frequency of euglossine bees, and their association with scent baits. Male bees were attracted to cineole, vanillin, methyl salicylate, and eugenol. The baits were hooked 1.5 m high and 6 m from one another. The specimens were collected from December 1997 to November 1998, once a month, from 7:00 to 17:00 h. A total of 339 male euglossine bees were caughts, accounting for 19 species and four genera. The most common species was E. cordata, making up 69.9% of the individuals, followed by E. truncata (2.3%), E. violaceifrons, and E. smaragdina (2.1%). The most attractive scent was cineole, which baited 87% of the specimens and 73.7% of the species. Vanillin, the second most visited bait, eured 7.6% of the specimens and 26.3% of the species. E. surinamensis was only collected with this bait. Methyl salicylate and eugenol baited combined 2.6% of the specimens. However, by species numbers Methyl salicylate attracted 21% whereas eugenol was attractive for 15.8% of them. In general, the species were more abundantly found in the rainy season (January-June). The hourly activity data showed that the euglossine bees were attracted to the baits all day long, but at a higher frequency in the morning period, peaking between 8:00 and 10:00 h.

Os ambientes urbanos têm se tornado refúgio para muitas espécies, entre as quais algumas abelhas da tribo Euglossini. O grupo inclui espécies dotadas de grande capacidade de voo, por isso são consideradas importantes polinizadores neotropicais. São escassas informações sobre Euglossini no Cerrado, são incompletas informações como a distribuição geográfica, quais são endêmicas e quais são cosmopolitas. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo identificar e analisar a composição de espécies de abelhas da tribo Euglossini ocorrentes em parques urbanos quanto à abundância, riqueza e atratividade através da utilização de iscas odoríferas. Os exemplares de Euglossini foram coletadas mensalmente no período de abril a agosto de 2008, em quatro parques urbanos de Goiânia, Goiás. As abelhas foram amostradas com auxilio de armadilhas de cheiro, expostas das 8 horas às 12 horas, contendo uma das essências: salicilato de metila, acetato de benzila, cineol, vanilina. Foram coletados 147 machos de Euglossini pertencentes a três gêneros e cinco espécies. Houve uma forte dominância de indivíduos de Eulaema nigrita Lepeletier (95,23%), seguida por Euglossa cordata (Linnaeus) (2,72%). O Cineol foi a essência que atraiu a maior abundância de machos e o salicilato de metila apresentou a maior riqueza de espécies atraídas. Este estudo constitui o primeiro registro de ocorrência das espécies Exaerete smaragdina (Guérin) e Euglossa imperialis Cockerell para a região Centro-Oeste e de Euglossa variabilis Friese para o Cerrado. A preservação do conjunto dessas áreas irá manter as populações de abelhas silvestres nestas regiões de importância ecológica, mantendo os serviços de polinização das espécies de plantas. Richness and Abundance of Euglossini Bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae) in Urban Parks in Goiânia, Goiás Abstract. Urban environments have become a refuge for many species, including some bees of the tribe Euglossini. The group includes species with large capacity flight, so they are considered important neotropical pollinators. Euglossini is scarce information about the Cerrado, incomplete information like geographic distribution, which are endemic and which are cosmopolitan. This study aimed to identify and analyze the composition of bee species of the tribe Euglossini occurring in urban parks as to abundance, richness and attractiveness through the use of scent baits. The specimens of Euglossini were collected monthly from April to August 2008 in four urban parks in Goiânia, Goiás. The bees were sampled with the aid of scent traps, exposed from 8 am to 12 noon, containing one of the essences: salicylate methyl, benzyl acetate, cineole, vanillin. We collected 147 male orchid bees belonging to three genera and five species. There was a strong dominance of individuals Eulaema nigrita Lepeletier (95.23%), followed by Euglossa cordata (Linnaeus) (2.72%). The Cineol was the essence that attracted the greatest abundance of males and methyl salicylate had the highest species richness attracted. This study is the first record of species occurrence of Exaerete smaragdina (Guérin) and Euglossa imperialis Cockerell for the Midwest and Euglossa variabilis Friese for the Cerrado. The preservation of all these areas will keep bee populations of wild these regions ecological importance of maintaining the service pollination of plant species.

Les oiseaux rendent d’importants services écologiques nécessaires au bien-être de l’homme. En Côte d’Ivoire, l’essentiel des études ornithologiques se sont déroulées au sud, et accessoirement au centre et au centre-ouest. En outre, très peu de travaux ont porté sur les zones humides. La ville de Korhogo abrite des barrages à vocation agro-pastorale qui n’ont été l’objet d’aucune étude. Pour combler ce manque de connaissance, une étude a été menée de février 2016 à janvier 2017. L’objectif de ce travail est d’évaluer la richesse spécifique et de déterminer l’influence des saisons sur la distribution qualitative de la communauté des oiseaux du barrage urbain de Koko dans la commune de Korhogo. Pour ce faire, des observations directes, utilisant la méthode des transects ponctuée d’arrêts d’environ 15 minutes, ont été effectuées. Les résultats indiquent que cette communauté est constituée de 63 espèces d’oiseaux appartenant à 32 familles et regroupées en 14 ordres. Globalement, l’ordre des Passériformes et la famille des Ardeidae sont les mieux représentés. Du point de vue de leur statut biogéographique, les espèces résidentes (37 individus : 59 %) et accidentelles (23 individus : 36,51%) sont majoritaires. Le plus grand nombre d’espèces a été observé en saison des pluies (52 individus : 82,54%). Sept espèces ont été spécifiques de la saison sèche alors que trois espèces sont caractéristiques de la saison des pluies. Les espèces résidentes ont été les nombreuses en toute saison. Au niveau structural, les espèces accessoires, les espèces assez-fréquentes et les espèces fréquentes ont été les mieux représentées en saison sèche tandis que les espèces assez-fréquentes ont été majoritaires en saison des pluies. Cette étude confirme la distribution des communautés des oiseaux selon les saisons. ABSTRACT Birds provide important ecosystem services necessary for human well-being. In Côte d'Ivoire, ornithological studies were carried out in the south, central and central-west. In addition, very little work has been done on wetlands. The Commune of Korhogo is home to agro-pastoral dams that have not been studied. To fill in this gap of information, a study was conducted from February 2016 to January 2017. The aim of this study was to assess the specific richness and to examine the effect of seasons on the qualitative distribution of the Koko urban dam birds’ community. Direct observations using the method of line transects with a 15 minutes points were carried out. Results show that this community consists of 63 species of birds belonging to 32 families and grouped in 14 orders. Globally, the order of the Passeriformes and the family of Ardeidae were the best represented. In terms of their biogeographical status, resident species (37 individuals: 59%) and accidental species (23 individuals: 36.51%) were dominant. The high number of bird species was observed during the rainy season (52 individuals: 82.54%). Seven species were specific to the dry season while three species are characteristic of the rainy season. Resident species were numerous in all seasons. The accessory and relatively frequent species have been the most abundant during the dry season while the fairly frequent species were predominant in the rainy season. This study confirms the distribution of bird communities according to the seasons.

From September, 92 to August, 93 bee sampling was done in a secondary forest near the Pepital River, in Alcântara, MA, in order to study the local Euglossini fauna. Five aromatic compounds were used: eucaliptol, eugenol, methyl salicylate, vanillin, and benzoate. Four hundred sixty-seven male Euglossini bees were captured, distributed in 4 genus and 19 species. Euglossa was the most abundant and with high diversity (302 specimens and 14 species), followed by Eulaema (121; 3), Eufriesea (41; 1), and Exaerete (3; 1). The species which more frequently visited the bait were Euglossa piliventris (141 specimens; 30.19%), Euglossa cingulata (113; 24.21%), Euglossa ignita (45; 9.64%), Eufriesea pulchra (41; 8.78%), and Euglossa gaianii (33; 7.07%) corresponding to 79.88% of the sampling universe. The bees were active throught the year, however during the rainy season more activity and diversity were observed. The most attractive essence was eucaliptol (44.32% specimens and 84.21% species). In spite of this study having been done in a forest fragment, a secondary vegetation area smaller than other areas studied in Maranhão, it showed a significant diversity rate. This result reinforces the importance of fragments in the conservation of local bee communities.

<p>As abelhas da subtribo Euglossina encontram-se amplamente distribuídas na região Neotropical, sendo mais diversificadas nas florestas úmidas. Objetivou-se realizar um levantamento das espécies desta subtribo em um fragmento de Mata Atlântica, um remanescente de brejo de altitude, localizado em uma região do Semiárido Brasileiro. O estudo foi conduzido no município de Portalegre, Rio Grande do Norte, entre os meses de fevereiro e agosto de 2015. A coleta de dados foi realizada mensalmente entre às 08h00 e 16h00, com a utilização de armadilhas contendo as essências eucaliptol, eugenol e vanilina. Foram coletados um total de 123 machos, distribuídos em quatro gêneros e seis espécies, sendo elas: <em>Eufriesea danielis </em>(43,09%), <em>Euglossa melanotricha </em>(25,20%), <em>Euglossa cordata </em>(15,45%), <em>Eulaema nigrita </em>(13,82%), <em>Euglossa fimbriata </em>(1,63%) e <em>Exaerete dentata</em> (0,81%). O intervalo entre 08h00 e 10h00 foi o de maior atividade, com 54,4% do total dos machos coletados. A comunidade de abelhas da região estudada apresentou maior preferência pelo eucaliptol, atraindo cinco espécies e 67 indivíduos (53,6%). A espécie <em>Eufriesea danielis </em>é reportada pela primeira vez para a região Nordeste do Brasil, enquanto que <em>Exaerete dentata </em>tem seu primeiro registro para o estado do Rio Grande do Norte.</p><p align="center"><strong><em>Euglossina (Hymenoptera: Apidae) fauna of a fragment of the Atlantic Rainforest of the Alto Oeste Potiguar, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil</em></strong></p><p><strong>Abstract:</strong> The bees of the Euglossina subtribe are widely distributed in the Neotropical region, being more diversified in the humid forests. The purpose of this research was to carry out a survey of the species of this subtribe in a fragment of Atlantic Forest, a remnant of altitude swamp, located in a region of the Brazilian Semiarid. The study was conducted in the municipality of Portalegre, Rio Grande do Norte, between February and August 2015. Data collection was performed monthly between 08h00 and 16h00, using traps containing the eucalyptol, eugenol and vanillin essences. A total of 123 males, distributed in four genera and six species were collected, which are: <em>Eufriesea danielis </em>(43.09%), <em>Euglossa melanotricha </em>(25.20%), <em>Euglossa cordata </em>(15.45%), <em>Eulaema nigrita </em>(13.82%), <em>Euglossa fimbriata </em>(1.63%) and <em>Exaerete dentata</em> (0.81%). The interval between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 was the most active, with 54.4% of the total collected males. The bee-plant community in a beach dune ecosystem in north-eastern of Brazil was studied concerning phenology and floral preference. The bees visited thirty-three species of 20 families of plants. The most visited species were Vernonia arenaria (Asteraceae), Chamaecrista hispidula (Caesalpiniaceae), Passiflora foetida (Passifloraceae) and Turnera melochioides (Turneraceae). Fifty-five percent of plants presented an annual or long flowering period (from 5 to 7 months). The largest number of species blooming was observed from March to August (dry season), corresponding to the period of greatest abundance and diversity of bees. Based on the range of floral sources used by the dominant bees, three guilds of bees were noted: bees with a restricted range of floral sources: Melitoma segmentaria, Centris tarsata, Centris flavifrons, Ceratinula sp.; moderate generalists: Megachile (Leptorachis) sp., Euglossa cordata, Augochlorella sp., Eulaema nigrita and Xylocopa frontalis; and generalists: Xylocopa cearensis, Apis mellifera, Exomalopsis analis and Pseudaugochloropsis pandora.

Euglossini bees are important Neotropical pollinators, but there is a lack in the knowledge about this fauna in dry tropical environments. The aims of this study were to evaluate the richness and abundance of euglossine bees in two fragments of seasonally dry tropical forest (Caatinga), as well as to assess the distribution of euglossine species richness in the Caatinga environment. Males were collected along 12 consecutive months, using traps with aromatic baits. The species richness (S=5) was lower than in rainforests and savannas. Euglossa cordata (L.) was the dominant species in the assemblage, representing 70% of the individuals. The highest abundance occurred in the rainy season. Euglossini fauna presents low local species richness in Caatinga areas, however the beta diversity is higher, since assemblages in different habitats have differences in species composition.

Machos de Euglossinac foram coletados nos cerrados da região de Barreirinhas, Zona do Litoral da Baixada Oriental Maranhense, com uso de cineol, eugenol, salicilato de metila e benzoato de benzila, como iscas. Foram encontradas 9 espécies distribuídas em 4 gêneros: Euglossa, Eufriesea, Eulaema e Exaerete. As mais comuns foram Euglossa cordata (63,31%), Eulaema ungulata (17,80%), Eulaema nigrita (7,63%), Euglossa modestior (4,94%) e Eufriesea ornata (4,16%). As demais, Euglossa chalybeata, Euglossa fimbriata, Euglossa melanotricha e Exaerete smaragdina, foram menos freqüentes, representando juntas 2,16% da amostra total. As abelhas estiveram ativas nas duas estações, seca e chuvosa, sendo mais abundantes na última. Cineol atraiu 78,2% dos machos (8 espécies), eugenol, 19,9% (5 espécies), salicilato de metila 1,3% (1 espécie) e benzoato de benzila 0,6% (2 espécies).

We conducted a first survey of the amphibians and reptiles of the Nectandra Cloud Forest Reserve in June 2010, during the rainy season in Costa Rica. We found a total of 30 species of amphibians and reptiles in 15 families during our weeklong survey, including 15 frogs, 2 salamanders, 7 lizards, and 6 snakes. We compare our results to those of a previous survey of the nearby San Ramón Reserve.

Fresh leaves of Actephila excelsa (Dazl.) Muell. from Vietnam were steam distilled to produce an oil in a yield of 0.15% (v/w). The essential oil was analyzed by a combination of capillary gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The main constituents of the oil were the sesquiterpenes γ-elemene (25.7%) and β-caryophyllene (11.2%). Other significant compounds were methyl salicylate (5.8%), benzyl benzoate (5.2%), ( E, E)-farnesylacetone (4.9%), anisole (4.7%), sabinene (4.1%) and menthone (4.0%). This is the first report on the volatile constituents of this plant.
