Abstract:Niger is a promising oilseed species for biodiesel production but there is no much information about the physiological potential of its seeds. Thus, the aim was to adapt the methodologies of accelerated aging test on six lots of niger seeds. The test was carried out by traditional and with saturated salt solution (20 and 40 g NaCl.100 mL-1) methods at 41 and 45 °C for 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. After the decay period, the seeds were submitted to the germination test, proceeding to an evaluation on the seventh day after sowing, counting the normal seedlings percentage. A completely randomized design with four replications of 50 seeds was used and the means were compared by Tukey's test. The accelerated aging test was correlated with seedling emergence and provided lots classification in at least two levels of vigor. For the accelerated aging test, the method with 20 g NaCl.100 mL-1 at 41 °C for 24 hours is recommend. The traditional method is not suitable because it provides water content variation between samples above what is tolerable.

The use of healthy and vigorous seeds is necessary to ensure adequate plant stands, therefore, vigor tests are used to measure the physiological potential of seeds alongside with the germination test. The objective of this study was to evaluate different procedures for the estimation of the physiological potential of eggplant seeds through the accelerated aging test. Seed lots were tested for moisture content, germination, first count of germination, seedling emergence and speed of emergence index. Then, seeds were subjected to the conventional accelerated aging test, using an unsaturated NaCl solution or a NaCl saturated solution, for 24, 48 and 72 hours at 41 °C, estimating the moisture content after each period of aging. The treatments were allocated in a completely randomized design, with four treatments (seed lots) and four replicates. The use of the saturated solution of NaCl decreases the absorption of water and the rate of deterioration of eggplant seeds during the accelerated aging test, providing more uniform results. The accelerated aging test allows eggplant seed lots from cv. Napoli to be ranked at different levels of vigor and, among the procedures tested, the combinations 41 °C/48 hours and 41 °C/72 hours allowed the proper assessment of the physiological potential of seeds of this cultivar.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Brachiaria seed contact time with 05-25-15 fertilizer (N-P2O5-K2O) on the seed’s physiological quality. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with four replicates. Treatments were arranged in a 5x4 factorial, being: five seeds contact times with fertilizer (0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours); four forages: Marandu palisadegrass, Piatã palisadegrass, Xaraés palisadegrass and Ruziziensis grass. The performed tests were: water content, germination (first count and germination percentage), tetrazolium (viability), electrical conductivity, accelerated aging, sand emergency and emergence speed index. Contact time of 05-25-15 fertilizer with Brachiaria seeds reduces linearly: Germination, emergence and emergence speed index of Brachiaria seeds; Piatã and Xaraés palisadegrass seeds viability; vigor (electrical conductivity), except in Ruziziensis grass seeds; and seeds germination of Piatã palisadegrass submitted to accelerated aging test (vigor). Piatã palisadegrass is the least recommended, among the analyzed grasses, for intercropping in simultaneous sowing.

Vigor tests are very important to obtain additional information to the standard germination test and can assist in decision-making. The aim of this work was to evaluate accelerated aging test methodologies for the determination of vigor in tobacco seeds. For the study, ten seed lots of tobacco were used. The initial quality of the tobacco seeds was determined through the germination test, first count of germination, germination speed index, seedling emergence at 7, 14 and 21 days after sowing, emergence speed index and the accelerated aging with water performed as proposed by the Association of Official Seed Analysts. After the determination of seed initial quality, the accelerated aging test was studied in the following methods: accelerated aging with water, saturated saline solution (40g NaCl 100mL-1 water) and unsaturated saline solution (11g NaCl 100mL-1 water), submitted to the temperatures of 45 and 41°C, for the exposure periods of 24, 48 and 72 hours. According to the results obtained, the accelerated aging test with water conducted under a temperature of 45°C combined with a 24-hour exposure period is shown as adequate for evaluating the vigor of tobacco seeds.

Laboratory vigour tests were performed on seed from 4 soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars coming from commercial crops grown in eastern Australia. The seed from each cultivar had greater than 80% germination and a range in vigour. Vigour tests consisted of the accelerated aging (with or without a seed protectant, Thiram), cold, saturation and hypocotyl length tests. Results were compared with seedling emergence from the same cultivar when planted under growth room conditions (25/20 1C, 14/10 h day/night) at 3 seedbed moisture levels (field capacity, -0.01 MPa; dry, -0.30 MPa; and saturated soil, soil saturated for 48 h, planted then allowed to dry to field capacity). The modified accelerated aging test with Thiram was significantly (P<0.01) correlated with emergence in all 3 seedbed moisture conditions. High vigour seed samples with high accelerated aging germinations emerged well. Overall, the vigour test which ranked the seed samples to give the best indicator of performance under a range of seedbed moisture conditions was the modified accelerated aging test with thiram.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine the most appropriate method to assess the sunn hemp ( Crotalaria juncea L.) seed vigor in the accelerated aging test. Five seed lots from harvest 2007/2008 were evaluated for germination, vigor and seedling emergence in the field. Accelerated aging test was performed at 41°C during 48, 72 and 96 hours, with and without sodium chloride saturated solution. Then, the promising procedure was also performed for 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 harvests. In the traditional accelerated aging test, the no-uniform water acquisition by the seeds adversely affected results. Accelerated aging test with sodium chloride saturated solution is the most appropriate method to evaluate the physiological potential of sunn hemp seeds, and the combination of 41°C and 96 hours is efficient for separating of seed lots in different vigor levels.

The use of good quality seeds is fundamental for proper establishment of a crop. In this way, for more precise determination of seed quality, vigor tests are performed in addition to the germination test. These tests enable the selection of the best lots for commercialization and planting. This study evaluates the effects of temperature and exposure times of the accelerated aging test for vigor classification of mungbean seed lots. Seeds of the mungbean cultivar Esmeralda were used, being obtained from four cultivated plots at the State University of Goiás (UEG), Ipameri Câmpus, in the 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017 harvests. The lots were initially characterized using germination and vigor tests (first germination count, germination rate index, seedling length, and seedling fresh and dry weight). The accelerated aging test was conducted with a completely randomized experimental design, in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement consisting of two temperatures (40 and 42 °C) and four times (24, 48, 72, and 96 hours), with four replicates of 50 seeds per lot. The lots showed significant differences in the germination test, first germination count, germination rate index, and seedling length. The accelerated aging test was efficient in classifying lots. Lot 3 obtained the best results, while lot 1 obtained the lowest ones. The combination of 42 °C temperature and 72 h of seed exposure to the accelerated aging test is the best to classify mungbean seed lots.

Germination test is used to assess the physiological quality of seeds; however, since it is carried out under ideal conditions, this test has not been shown sufficient for this purpose. Instead, it is possible to use vigor tests, although the lack of standardized methodologies has reduced their applicability and reproducibility. Thus, this study aimed to develop methodologies for conducting tests of germination, accelerated aging, and electrical conductivity for the evaluation of the physiological quality of pitaya seeds. For this purpose, seeds from ripe Hylocereus undatus fruits were used. A completely randomized experimental design was used with four replications. The physiological quality of the seeds was assessed using germination, accelerated aging, and electrical conductivity tests, and the speed of germination index (SGI) and mean germination time (MGT) were determined for both the germination test and accelerated aging test. For the statistical analysis, we performed regression model adjustments and calculated the Pearson correlation coefficient (p < 0.05). The germination test for H. undatus seeds can be performed at 25 °C, with the aim of reaching the highest SGI and lowest MGT values. The accelerated aging test can be conducted at 43 °C for 48 h, because combining these factors favors the expression of seed vigor, allowing seeds to achieve the maximum SGI and minimum MGT, while reducing the time of the assay. The electrical conductivity test can be performed using 25 seeds at a temperature of 30 °C and a water volume of 10 mL, since under these conditions there is less interference from external factors on the leachate content of the solution.

Gherkin seeds usually show irregular physiological quality. Seed production requires fast and reliable tests to evaluate seed quality. Germination test is considered a recognized analysis method; however, seed technology has pursuit the improvement of vigor tests aiming the evaluation of seed’s physiological potential. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate procedures to perform the test of accelerated aging and determine the physiological and sanitary potential of gherkin seeds. Four seed lots of cultivar Liso Calcuta were used in the study. To evaluate the initial physiological quality the water content was determined and germination and emergence tests, as well as indices of germination speed and emergence speed were used. The accelerated aging test was performed as traditionally and with saturated saline solution, with 48, 72 and 96 hours, at temperatures of 41oC and 45oC. After aging, the water content was determined, and seeds’ germination and sanity tests were performed. The experiment was set under a completely random design in factorial 4x3x2 (lots x aging periods x temperatures). The standard accelerated aging test and the test with saturated saline solution at 41oC for 96 hours were efficient to evaluate the vigor of gherkin seeds. Saturated saline solution provides uniform water absorption and deterioration in gherkin seeds, allowing to discriminate seed lots in different vigor levels. The salinity test after accelerated aging with saline solution reduces the incidence of some fungi.

Celosia argentea L. and Celosia cristata L. are plants that are differentiated by the intensity and color of their flowering, and can be used as garden or cut-flower, with characteristic propagation by seeds produced in large quantities. The present study aimed to evaluate the physiological and sanitary quality of Celosia argentea and Celosia cristata seeds subjected to the accelerated aging test. The experiment was carried out in October 2016, using a completely randomized design, in a 2 × 6 factorial scheme (two temperatures: 41 and 45 oC and six periods of heat exposure: 0 (control), 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h), with four replicates of 50 seeds, for the two species of cockscomb (C. argentea and C. cristata). The seed lots of the two species of celosia are from the crops in the year 2012 and were stored in a cold chamber (15 oC and 40% RH), with an average moisture content of 11% and a mean germination of 98%. After the accelerated aging test, the physiological and sanitary qualities of the seeds of the two species of celosia were evaluated. We conclude that the accelerated aging proved to be effective for the evaluation of vigor, germination and emergence in the species field, when submitted to temperatures of 41 and 45 oC up to 120 h.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of industrial seed treatments on the physiological potential of soybean seeds over storage. Four mixtures of agrochemical products in association with two fertilizers were tested. The agrochemical product mixtures were carbendazim/thiram + imidacloprid/thiodicarb; pyraclostrobin, thiophanate-methyl, and fipronil; thiophanate-methyl/fluazinam + bifenthrin/imidacloprid; and metalaxyl-m/fludioxonil + thiamethoxam. The two fertilizers were 7% N, 16% P2O5, 0.6% Co, and 2.5% Mo; and 1% Co, 10% Mo, and 7% P2 O5. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design in a split-plot arrangement in time, with four replications. The treatments were allocated in the plots, while the storage periods (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 days) constituted the split-plots. The following tests were carried out in each period: first count of germination, germination, accelerated aging, emergence speed index in sand substrate, and final seedling emergence in sand substrate. Seed germination and vigor declined over the storage period, especially after industrial treatment. Pesticide mixtures of a carbendazim/thiram fungicide base and an imidacloprid/thiodicarb insecticide base most impaired seed physiological potential throughout storage, regardless of fertilizer use in the industrial treatment.
