PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of the sugarcane biopolymer membrane in femoral artery patch angioplasty on dogs. METHODS: Eight dogs were submitted to bilateral femoral artery patch angioplasty with a sugarcane biopolymer membrane patch on one side and e-PTFE patch on the contralateral side. This research was performed at Experimental Surgical Research Laboratory of the Centro de Ciências da Saúde at Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. The dogs were submitted to a new surgery at 180 days after the patch angioplasty in order to harvest the femoral artery. All the animals were evaluated by: clinical examination, measure of femoral artery diameter, arteriogram and Doppler fluxometry. Yet the material harvested was sent to histological study. Each animal served as its own control. RESULTS: In all vessels of both groups there were no cases of infection, aneurysm formation, rupture or pseudoaneurysm formation and thrombosis. In both groups it was observed a chronic inflammatory reaction with lymphocytes, neutrophils and fibrosis in the outer surface of the patches. It was observed fibrosis in the inner surfaces of all the patches. In e-PTFE patches occurred invasion by fibroblasts. CONCLUSION: The sugarcane biopolymer membrane can be used as a patch in femoral artery angioplasty on dogs.

This report describes a case of 50 year old woman fever and bony pains with lytic lesion in skull. A polyclonal band was seen in γregion on serum electrophoresis. Bone marrow examination showed excess of plasma cells along with many Pseudo- Gaucher cells. The diagnosis of chronic inflammatory reaction was made. Although stain for AFB was negative, the patient responded to antitubercular treatment. The presence of pseudo-gaucher cells along with plasmacytosis is a rare finding in tuberculosis. ✓ Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) changes induced by Pantopaque myelography were determined by comparing samples of CSF from 47 patients with disc symptoms, obtained before and after myelography. Cell count, total protein, colloidal gold curve, and CSF protein electrophoretic patterns were compared. An immediate and persistent modest lymphocytosis was found. Total protein and CSF gamma globulin were elevated 3 weeks after myelography and throughout the remainder of the 80-day study period. This CSF profile characterizes a chronic inflammatory reaction induced by Pantopaque.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of polypropylene mesh, implanted by inguinotomy, in the spermatic funiculus, epididium and testis of dogs. METHODS: Eighteen dogs were considered (12-23 Kg), separated in three groups. Group A (n=7): left side (with mesh) versus right side (without mesh); Group B (n=7): left side (without mesh) versus right side (with mesh) and Group C (n=4): without any surgical manipulation (control group). After being observed for 60 days, the animals were subjected to bilateral removal of the spermatic funiculus, epididium and testis that were submitted to histological analysis. During the re-operation, a macroscopic evaluation was performed. RESULTS: On the mesh side, we noted 100% of mesh adherence to the posterior wall of the inguinal canal, as well as the adherence of the spermatic funiculus to the mesh. A congestion of the pampiniform plexus was noted in three animals. Chronic inflammation reaction and foreign body reaction in the spermatic funiculus was observed in 100% of the animals. On the side that did not carry a mesh, chronic inflammatory reaction was observed in 71% of the animals. All the animals presented chronic inflammatory reaction in the deferent duct in the mesh side and in eleven animals in the side without the mesh. These alterations were not found in Group C. There was a considerable statistical reduction in the average difference of the diameter of the lumen of the deferent duct in the mesh side. In the epididium and testis, macro and microscopic alterations were not significant, although one animal presented a marked reduction of spermatogenesis on the mesh side. CONCLUSION: The polypropylene mesh, when in contact with the spermatic funiculus of dogs, causes a more intense chronic inflammatory reaction and a significant reduction in the diameter of the lumen of the deferent duct.

Abstract A case of posttraumatic meningioma with pathological evidence of intimate association with a nidus of chronic inflammatory reaction is presented. The literature regarding the controversial association of trauma with this neoplasm is critically reviewed. Although meningiomas are not common sequelae of head trauma, it is proposed that they may arise when the injury results in chronic inflammation.

A small animal model of arterial insufficiency has been used to investigate enzymic alterations in the gastrocnemius, plantaris and soleus muscles of the hypoperfused limb. At 7 days after induction of arterial insufficiency by unilateral femoral artery ligation, there were significant increases in the maximal activities of hexokinase, phosphorylase and 6-phosphofructokinase, whereas the activities of citrate synthase and 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase remained unchanged. Similar increases in hexokinase, phosphorylase and 6-phosphofructokinase were still apparent 8-10 weeks after unilateral artery ligation, although only hexokinase remained significantly higher than contralateral control values. No enhancement of oxidative enzyme activities was observed. The results are discussed in relation to the conflicting findings reported by other groups investigating enzymic adaptations in patients with arterial insufficiency.

Common femoral artery atherosclerosis is a common cause of claudication and critical limb ischaemia. Surgical endarterectomy with or without patch angioplasty has been considered the gold standard for the treatment of common femoral peripheral artery disease. Endovascular intervention to the common femoral artery has gained popularity in recent years as devices and technical skills have advanced. A systematic review of the literature from 1987 to 2018 for endovascular treatment of common femoral artery disease was conducted. This article summarises the data on acute and long-term outcomes for endovascular treatment of common femoral artery disease.
