High division of the median nerve proximal to the carpal tunnel, also known as a bifid median nerve, is a rare anatomical variant with an incidence between 1 and 3%. In order to study the incidence of this anatomical variation in the Bulgarian population, we examined the upper limbs of 51 formol-carbol fixed human cadavers and also 154 upper limbs undergoing carpal tunnel decompression. We detected one case of bifid median nerve during anatomical dissections and two cases in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. In one of the clinical cases, the anatomical variation was detected preoperatively by MRI. We discuss different variations of this nerve and emphasize their potential clinical implications.

Introduction The musculocutaneous nerve and the median nerve are branches from the lateral cord of the brachial plexus with a root value of C5, C6, and C7. The medial root of the median nerve is a branch of the medial cord. The present study aims at observing any variations in these peripheral nerves, so that this knowledge can be utilized by surgeons, anesthesiologists, and orthopedicians during surgical procedures and nerve block. Materials and Methods The present study was carried on 30 adult embalmed cadavers (60 upper limbs) in the department of anatomy of the Kasturba Medical College , Manipal, India. The infraclavicular part of the brachial plexus was dissected, and any anatomical variations in the formation and in the branching pattern of the musculocutaneous nerve and of the median nerve were noted and photographs were taken. Results The median nerve was noted to be formed from 3 roots in 8 out of 60 dissected upper limbs (13.33%). The musculocutaneous nerve was absent in 5% of the dissected limbs, and communications between these 2 nerves were noted in 13.33% of the dissected limbs. Conclusions Noted variations of the nerves may be of help to surgeons operating in the axillas and in the arms.

Anatomical variations of peripheral nerves are important and can help explain otherwise incomprehensible clinical findings. A study of 26 right and 18 left formalin-preserved upper limbs identified the fact that the musculocutaneous nerve is subject to considerable anatomical variation, including communication with the median nerve. A study of its branching pattern made us aware of why debility after trauma to the lateral aspect of the upper arm may be more than expected, and this study considers the clinical and surgical importance of these variations of the musculocutaneous nerve.

Introduction: Musculocutaneous nerve is derived from the lateral cord of brachial plexus and supplies the muscles of the arm. Initially the nerve accompanies the lateral side of third part of axillary artery and then pierces the coracobrachialis muscle after supplying it, passes downwards and laterally in between biceps brachii and brachialis sending branches to both and continues as lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm. Variations of musculocutaneous nerve is important for surgeons, orthopedic surgeons and traumatologists, so a detailed cadaveric study of musculocutaneous nerve was done to observe the variations. Material & Methods: Musculocutaneous nerve was studied in 50 human cadavers (30 males and 20 females) of age group 40-60 years at Department of Anatomy, Subharti Medical College, Meerut, India. Results: Musculocutaneous nerve was present in all the cases and was piercing the coracobrachialis muscle. In 4% of the cases, the nerve was rejoining the median nerve after piercing the coracobrachialis.

AbstractCommunications between musculocutaneous nerve and median nerve may be of considerable significance to neurologists and orthopaedicians when dealing with patients of nerve entrapment syndromes of the upper limb. Many authors have mentioned about an occurrence of such a variation previously, but the presence of a communication between the two nerves in both the arms has not been cited to the best of our knowledge. During routine dissection on a 72 year old male cadaver for the under graduate students in the Department of Anatomy at K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, we encountered an anomalous communication between musculocutaneous and median nerve in both the upper limbs. The communicating branch arose from the musculocutaneous nerve at a distance of 12.6 cm and 12.5 cm from the tip of coracoid process on right and left side and joined the median nerve 16.2 cm from the same bony point. Communications between nerves like this may explain abnormal debilities in certain cases of trauma of the upper arm. Lack of awareness of such variations with different patterns of communications between musculocutaneous and median nerve might complicate surgical repair of the nerves.

AbstractDuring routine dissection of an adult male cadaver, we observed bilateral communication between musculocutaneous nerve and median nerve. The level of origin of the communicating branch from musculocutaneous nerve was different in both arms. In left arm it arose before piercing coracobrachialis and in the right arm after piercing it. It is important to be aware of this variation while planning a surgery in the region of arm, as these nerves are more liable to be injured during operations. Any compression over the communicating branch may give rise to varying patterns of weakness that may impose difficulty in diagnosis for the neurologists.

Studying mechanisms, which maintain the body homeostasis, is particularly important in the conditions of continuous impact of adverse environmental and manufacturing factors. Long-term exposure to fluorides leads to chronic fluoric intoxication, the pathogenesis of which is a subject of multiple controversy and discussions. Not enough attention is still paid to elucidating the visceral pathology associated with fluorine-induced immune disorders. There are virtually no studies of immune reactions that define the morphofunctional nature of the liver response to early stages of fluoric intoxication. Aim. To study pathophysiological mechanisms of hepatic immune reactivity in subchronic exposure of the body to fluorine compounds. Methods. Experiments were performed on 210 male rats weighing 180-220 g. The animals were divided into two groups: 1) control (n=80) and 2) subchronic exposure to sodium fluoride (n=130). The rats had free access to a 10 mg/l aqueous solution of sodium fluoride (daily dose, 1.2 mg/kg body weight) for 12 weeks. Blood was withdrawn from the caudal vein at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks of the experiment for immunological and biochemical tests. Histological study of the liver was performed after decapitation of rats under ether anesthesia. Results. The subchronic exposure to sodium fluoride was associated with intracellular and intravascular damage of the liver. Activation of inflammatory mediators and development of immunological disorders during the experiment contributed to a systemic inflammatory reaction, which resulted in persistent morphological injuries of the liver and changes in enzyme activities in major metabolic pathways. Conclusion. The study results can be used for development and implementation of preventive measures against the effects of high fluorine concentrations, which would include a successive use of detoxification, immunomodulation and organ protection.

This study was conducted to determine the growth performance, correlation and regression estimates of seven-chicken strains in South-western Nigeria using a total of 300 day-old chicks. The birds were divided into seven groups based on their strain. The seven strains are Normal feather (NF), Fulani ecotype (FE), Frizzle feather (FF), naked neck (NN) and Transylvania indigenous strains while Hubbard and Marshal were meat-type exotic chickens. There were forty- five (45) unsexed day-old chicks in each strain except the Frizzle feather that were 30 in number. Completely randomized design (CRD) was used for the trial that lasted for 8 weeks. The birds were fed experimental diets ad libitum throughout the period of the study. Results showed that there were significant differences (p<0.05) in the initial and final weights of the birds. It was observed that exotic strains weighed heavier (3569.73gHB) than their indigenous counterparts (1391.11gNF). However, the Fulani ecotype weighed heaviest (1840.99g) among Nigeria indigenous strains during the experimental period. This showed that FE strains are generally heavy breed chicken and could be incorporated into a meat producing indigenous chicken if improved upon. The result of the correlation coefficients showed that a very strong, positive and highly significant (P<0.001) relationship existed between body weights and linear body measurements as most of the values are (>0.40). All the body parameter examined had significant (p<0.01) and direct relationship with the body weight. Shoulder-to-tail length (STL) had the highest coefficient of 0.98.The high correlation estimates obtained in this study could be as a result of pleiotropy, heterozygosity or linkage of genes in the birds. The three functions were highly significant (p<0.05) for all the parameters studied. This shows that the functions well described the parameters. On the basis of coefficient of determination (R ), the body weight of poultry birds at any age can be predicted most accurately with BRG using cubic function.
