Wavelet transform and other signal analysis techniques suggest that the planktic foraminiferal (PF) long-term evolutionary record of the last 127 Ma can be attributed to complex periodic and nonlinear patterns. Correlation of the PF extinction pattern with other geological series favors an origin of the ~30 Ma periodicity and self-organization by quasi-periodic mantle-plume cycles that in turn drive episodic volcanism, CO2-degassing, oceanic anoxic conditions, and sea-level fluctuations. Stationary ~30 Ma periodicity and a weak secular trend of ~100 Ma period are evident in the PF record, even without consideration of the mass extinction at the K–T boundary. The 27–32 Ma periodicity in the impact crater record and lows in the global sea-level curve, respectively, are ~6.5 Ma and ~2.3 Ma out of phase with PF-extinction data, although major PF-extinction events correspond to the bolide impacts at the K–T boundary and in late Eocene. Another six extinction events correspond to abrupt global sea-level falls between the late Albian and early Oligocene. Self-organization in the PF record is characterized by increased radiation rates after major extinction events and a steady number of baseline species. Our computer model of long-term PF evolution replicates this SO pattern. The model consists of output from the logistic map, which is forced at 30 Ma and 100 Ma frequencies. The model has significant correlations with the relative PF-extinction data. In particular, it replicates singularities, such as the K–T event, nonstationary 2.5–10 Ma periodicities, and phase shifts in the ~30 Ma periodicity of the PF record.

The purpose of this study is formation of tools for forecasting the economic security of the enterprise by modeling methods when changing investment support. The relevance of this study is due to the need to solve the problem of modernization management system of the enterprise by implementing the project management of economic security of the enterprise in the implementation of investment programs.The variant of model offered economic security of the enterprise. This model involves the implementation of the process of adaptive management, based on the definition of safe limits of longterm growth of the enterprise. It has established that the ratio of self-organization processes and managerial influences depends on the value of the self-organization coefficient. The calculated value of adaptive potential on the basis of the indicator of self-organization as the dynamic indicator of maintenance of perspective growth of the enterprise on the allocated purposes has offered. This indicator can serve as a criterion for assessing the effectiveness of the management system of the enterprise in relation to the project management of economic security of the enterprise in the implementation of investment programs of key goals of long-term growth of the enterprise.

Porous silicon (pSi) exhibits strong photoluminescence (PL) and its PL is often exploited for chemical sensor development. However, the sensor response is not uniform across a pSi specimen. We use co-localized confocal PL and Raman scattering mapping to establish a relationship between the analyte-induced PL response and the silicon nanocrystallite size, size distribution, and amorphous silicon (aSi) contribution across a pSi specimen. Using toluene as a model analyte, high analyte-induced PL response is associated with areas within the specimen that have (i) low aSi content, (ii) silicon nanocrystallites having diameters between 2 and 5 nm, and (iii) silicon nanocrystallites that exhibit a narrow size distributions (≤1% relative standard deviation).

AbstractFairy circles are striking regularly sized and spaced, bare circles surrounded by Stipagrostis grasses that occur over thousands of square kilometres in Namibia. The mechanisms explaining their origin, shape, persistence and regularity remain controversial. One hypothesis for the formation of vegetation rings is based on the centrifugal expansion of a single individual grass plant, via clonal growth and die-back in the centre. Clonality could explain FC origin, shape and long-term persistence as well as their regularity, if one clone competes with adjacent clones. Here, we show that for virtually all tested fairy circles the periphery is not exclusively made up of genetically identical grasses, but these peripheral grasses belong to more than one unrelated genet. These results do not support a clonal explanation for fairy circles. Lack of clonality implies that a biological reason for their origin, shape and regularity must emerge from competition between near neighbor individuals within each fairy circle. Such lack of clonality also suggests a mismatch between longevity of fairy circles versus their constituent plants. Furthermore, our findings of lack of clonality have implications for some models of spatial patterning of fairy circles that are based on self-organization.
